I like to work out before work 2-3 times a week. Latley I almost always get the workout in before on Mondays. There is something about starting the week with a morning workout, having that energy when you get to work and knowing you have already started your day/week productivley…. but maybe most importantly having that freed up time in the evening.
So this morning, I definietly was not getting out of bed when the alarm went of at 5:20. I thought about it for about 15 seconds. Then I thought, ok maybe I will just get up at 6:00 and workout. Usually the routine is to get up at 5:20, walk the dog with my husband for about 2 miles while I drink coffee to wake up, and then go to the gym by 6:30 to get to work by around 8:30.
I finally rolled out of bed at 6:45.
So, I brought my running clothes to work so I could change before I left, to give me no excuse or distraction when I got home. It is pretty hot out today, so I decided to go to the gym. Heading to the gym with no plan can sometimes be a good thing and sometimes a terrible thing.
Today it was a good thing. I was feeling tired and just got on the treadmill and started running. One of those runs where you think I will be happy to run for 20-30 minutes. Well about 5 minutes in this lady gets on the treadmill next to me. She starts running pretty fast, and she is probably 15 years older than me… and was definietly super fit. I didn’t really know how fast she was going, but I felt like we were at about the same speed and it motivated me enough to pick it up and do some speed work and hills.
It felt really good, as it always does to get an upexpected fantastic run/workout in. Although I was a little dissapointed to see my treadmill buddy killing it on the elliptical when I went to wipe off my treadmill. I almost… just almost thought about hopping on one for a bit. Competitive much? At least she motivated me to boost my lousy 3 mile run to an intense 6 mile hill and speed run.
Do you ever feel like you are more competetive or willing to work harder in a workout than in an actual race? Sometimes I think if I would only push myself this hard in a race I could really PR.
