I’ll Have Another Podcast Episode 78: Sam Gardner

I was honored to chat with Sam Gardner for episode 78 of the podcast. Sam is a long time listener of the show and we connected through that. Sam is a super speedy runner from the south, with a marathon PR of 3:02.

Sam has been through so much in her 32 years. In 2005, while she was in college and training for her second half marathon, she was abducted, attacked and raped repeatedly. She was held captive in the woods for several hours, until dark, when her attacker did eventually let her go. Her story is a story of hope and overcoming.

The event changed the entire trajectory of her entire life. At first, it changed it for the worst. She felt broken and helpless. She suffered from PTSD and really just couldn’t even do daily life because she was so terrified that something was going to happen again. She ended up finishing the half marathon she was training for when the attack happened and checking into an inpatient eating disorder treatment facility the next day.
Over the last 5 or so years, Sam has taken her half time down to 1:24 and run several marathons now as well (her last two were 3:03 and 3:02 and she would love to get under 3 in my next one). In 2015, she won the Rock N Roll New Orleans marathon (that was the 3:03). At the time, that was a 20 minute PR and it was a total surprise to WIN a marathon.  “Winning that marathon was an indescribable feeling. In my mind, I had gone from victim to victorious.”
I really love connecting with listeners on a deeper level and am so thankful to have gotten to know Sam through our conversation. I hope every listeners feels comfortable reaching out to me to share their story. Though I can’t bring every single person on, I would love to hear from you and if it makes sense for the timeline of the show, we’ll make it happen!! Thanks Sam for reaching out and being so open and honest!

500 Festival Mini Mini

My family loves the 500 Festival Mini Marathon so much and this year we can’t wait to participate in the Mini Mini! The Mini Mini is a timed fun run designed specifically for kids ages 5 – 12.  It gives kids with an experience similar to the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, that’s sized just for them. The race includes course entertainment, massive cheering sections, participant timing, and the coveted mini-mini medal (a smaller replica of the Indy Mini medal). All participants will start and finish at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s famed Yard of Bricks.

There are five different race distances will be offered, ranging from half a mile to 2.5 miles, so participants to select the race that best meets their age and ability.

The race is  Sunday, September 17 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway- open to kids ages 5-12 and guardians can pre-register their mini runner for $15 at IndyMini.com. As I’ll Have Another listeners can use the code Another17 to save $3 on your mini-mini registration.
