A week and a half post surgery and I feel totally myself. I’m thinking the 4 week recovery might turn into 2, easy!

Today is my first full day with Marshall by myself and although my weight restriction is 10-15 lbs, I’m getting by just fine with my 23 lb kid. I don’t feel like I’m doing anything I shouldn’t when I lift him, so I’m going with it.

After the first surgery, it was obvious to me that I shouldn’t be lifting him or anything and I was just so tired and whoa. This surgery is a whole different ball game. Just a boob job ok? Really.

I did not however have the motivation to get him ready and go to the gym this AM. I originally thought we might (I was planning to walk and ride the bike) but it didn’t happen. So we spent the morning running around the house playing with pots and pans while stopping to watch Curious George every so often. After his nap- we went out to run some errands. My mother in law would be shaking her head. But I do not know how to not leave the house.

We checked out Foundry Provisions FINALLY! I’ve been wanting to try this coffee shop since they opened a while back. I got a Almond Chi Tea Latte and Marshall got a donut from Long’s bakery. YUM. I felt imagined looks coming from the hipsters who were probably annoyed wondering if I was going to hang out with my kid (who actually was pretty quiet!) I almost stood up and said don’t worry we are only staying 10 minutes, but we just minded our business and went on our merry way.

Anyway- I want to say thanks to all for the support throughout this time. I’ve been told 1,000 times how brave I am for taking this on and going through with the prophylactic mastectomy, but in all honesty I just feel like I made the decision that was right for me. What took the most courage was following through with getting my blood test to see if I even had the stupid gene mutation. Once that was done all of the steps to follow were simply decisions based on knowledge I had. You just do what you have to do and accept it.

Now to some delicious stuff- we took a mexican quinoa dish to the super bowl party we went to last night and after I put it up on Instagram, had several requests for the recipe.

It’s really as simple as:

Step 1:

  • Rinse Quinoa

  • Cook 1 cup – it’s 1 cup of Quinoa to 2 cups of water. I used a cup of water and a cup of broth to enhance flavor.

Step 2:

  • Sautee veggies
    • onion
    • green pepper
    • mushroom
    • tomato (add those in last, we used mixed medley cherry tomato’s)
    • If we had jalopeno, I would have definitely added it
Step 3:
  • Mix everything together in casserole dish
    • add 1/2 jar of corn and chili salsa (we bought this at Trader Joes)
    • half can of corn
    • can of black beans
    • sprinkle hot pepper cheese on top
Step 4:
  • Bake at 375 for 20 minutes or until cheese looks melty
  • Add avocado on top. And make it look kind pretty.
That’s it! It’s basically just throw in whatever you like and make it a party in that dish. Also- we made some fantastic guacamole to go with it. Super simple:
  • Avocado, tomato, red onion, a squeeze or three of lime, cummin, cayenne pepper, garlic powder- whatever spices you like. I’m a big fan of guac that has a bit of a stronger lime flavor.
What’s your favorite quinoa recipe?

Don’t worry, this won’t turn into a recipe blog- I am no cook! (although Glenn is, so I have to say you are kind of missing out)

I finished Chrissie Wellington’s A life without limits” and have walked away feeling inspired to be a better athlete, but more importantly a better person. Chrissie is an Ironman World Champion 4 times over and has never lost an Iron distance race in the 13 that she has completed.

I read this book during several easy treadmill runs and book marked my favorite parts along the way. I know a lot of people think I’m crazy that I read on the treadmill- but I swear it’s amazing. I put my kindle on the second or third to largest font and it works beautifully. It helps pass time and also helps me enjoy the run more, while getting some reading in. There are so many books I wouldn’t have read this past year, had it not been for my treadmill running.

I promised myself I would actually go back and read the book marked pages though. A fair warning- this woman has a lot of great things to say, so there are quite a few quotes I pulled.

Clearly Chrissie is an amazingly talented athlete– you can’t WILL yourself to be as fast as or as talented as her, but you CAN will yourself to work hard and be the best that YOU can be. What I love most about Chrissie, is that she uses her platform to do good things. She knows that she has a responsibility and puts her responsibility to action by making the world a better place.

SO, here are my favorites:

  • “Just seize every opportunity you have, embrace every experience. Make a mark, for all the right reasons.”  – Said by Chrissie’s Dad when he dropped her off at College

  • “Acknowledging those weaknesses is vital to our development. Some are real and can be overcome, but others are not so much weaknesses as imperfections- it is just our perception that makes them seem so. Willpower and discipline have always played a huge role in my life and never more so than now, but if they are not applied selectively, they can wear you down as much as they spur you on. Pick your battles and accept yourself for who you are.”

  • “Hard work and an open mind- it’s the only way to realize the potential that is inside every one of us.”

  • “You may not be able to right now, but with a positive farm of mind and a willingness to work, anything is possible. Remaining positive really is one of the most precious faculties for any athlete. That, and the ability to stay focused and disciplined. Develop a mind bank of positive images and thoughts- family, friends, previous successes, favorite places, a big plate of chips. You need to build it up as you would any collection, but soon you will have a range of thoughts to flick through when next your body and souls are screaming out for relief.”

  • “Never ever give up- and smile”

  • “In an endurance athlete’s life, pain is never far away. Pain is little more than a conversation between your body and your brain, this is another reason why a fit mind is so important. The brain is the master computer of the body. Even when we are working on the efficiency of the peripheral components- the legs, the arms, the butt cheeks- we can recruit the seat of all power to enhance the effectiveness of our work. It’s a question of testing limits. For a star there’s the importance of keeping an open mind. The brain is programmed to protect us, and that can mean imposing limited now hat it thinks we can or should do. Constantly push at those limits, because the brain can be way too cautious.”

  • “Never image in anything is impossible and never stop trying out new things.”

  • “Everyone gets nervous before a race- it’s human. I would be worried about any athlete that didn’t. It’s a sign of how much we care. The key is to trust in your preparation. You have done all you can, os focus on that fact. You will remain the same person before, during and after the arc, so the result, however important, will not define you. The journey is what matters.”

  • LIVE: By John Blazeman “Live…. More than your neighbors. Unleash yourself upon the world and go places. Go no. Giggle, no, laugh. No… stay out past day, and bark at the moon like the wild dog that you are. Understand that this is not a dress rehearsal. This is it…. your life. Face your fears and live your dreams. Take it in. Yes, every chance you get…. come close. And by all means, whatever you do… Get it on film”

  • “You know that there will be ebbs and flows, and you have to hold on to the knowledge that you have been there before and come through it.You can’t latch on to the pain; somehow you must switch that part of your brain off and go into automatic pilot.”

  • “No one should ever be afraid of failing; it’s being afraid to give it your al in trying that I urge against. If there is one thing I have learned, particularly in my life as an athlete, it is that our limits may not be where we think they are. And even when we think we’ve finally reached them, the next time we go there exploring we often find that they’ve moved again.”

And this is one reason I love her so much:

  • “More than though, is the desire to use well this privilege of being a world champion. It excited me to be in a position to make a difference. It excites me to see how sport can inspire people and change lives. I believe that the responsibilities of a professional sportsman or woman extend beyond their performance on the big stage. They have a role to pal in shaping the health of their nations, spreading positive messages and doing their best to effect chance. Not enough take that responsibility seriously. With it comes power, and you choose to use it or waste it.”
  • “My only policy throughout has been to keep an open mind and, whatever I may do, to give it my all.”

  • “Be Happy 4 this moment…. 4 this moment…. is your life”

That’s all! I hope this left you feeling inspired this AM- and if you’re looking for a good read- pick it up. 🙂

Hi!!

Just providing an update post surgery over here!

Waiting Room, Pre Surgery

I had been pretty calm going into this surgery, but I think anytime you’re being put under anesthsia you get a little nervous. Then I started filling out my paperwork and the receptionist asked me if I had a living will. I immediately thought about how Kanye West’s mom died when having some kind of plastic surgery and immediately wondered if I might die.

Glenn thought about Seinfeld when Kramer watched the movie “The other side of darkness” and wanted the plug pulled… until he finished the movie and the girl work up.

Then he seriously asked me what my intentions were if he had to make a decision and I told him to shut up and not to bring that up again. Told him, I trusted him more than I trusted myself to make the best decision. So, there’s that.

Then I pictured my plastic surgeon (Dr. Grasee- LOVE HER.) laughing at me for thinking like that and got calm again.

When I had the mastectomy, the anesthesiologist gave me versed before they even rolled me back to the operating room because I was so anxious. I requested this again, but before he came back to give it to me, the nurse was rolling me away.

I did not like going to the operating room awake. Makes it seem too real. Although, not as weird as having a c-section when they roll you away awake and you STAY awake as they cut you open. As we were entering the room, he was running out saying he was coming for me, but apparently this nurse was ready to get things going though. So, as I was transferring from the rolling bed to the operating bed, he said put the versed in my IV and said I’d start feeling tired. I saw it go in and as I was wondering how long it would take to make me fall asleep, the next thing I knew I was waking up in the recovery room. So weird!

In my recovery room there was an old man they were waking up too and I remember I just kept looking at him wondering why we were hanging out together and why I was awake but he was not. No hospital stays this time though, we were out and on the road within an hour or so of surgery.

Here is a really unflattering picture of me post surgery:

In a haze.

And on the car ride to Bloomington, I dozed on and off with my mouth wide open and spilled an entire can of coke. Coming out of being doped up is a funny thing, because you think you’re not doped up, but you really still are.

This surgery has left me feeling pretty sore and very swollen, but nothing like the mastectomy as far as pain.  You can’t even compare the two. The first surgery was not only very physically exhausting, but it was very emotionally exhausting as well. This time, I’m coming through the other side.

I’m enjoying my down time right now, but am only on day 3 (including surgery day), so I’m sure I’ll start getting ansy after a week or so. I had the house (my parents house) to myself for almost a full two hours yesterday. Glenn and Marshall went to Wonderlab and on an ice cream date, and my parents ran some errands. I tell you, I can’t remember the last time I was home alone and it was beautiful and quiet and peaceful. We are posted up here, so Glenn can go to work tomorrow and my mom can help with Marshall. Plus, there house is much spacier than ours and the three of us cooped up in our house for days on end is never pleasant. No where to hide!

And in case you were wondering- YES, Marshall wears this shirt he’s wearing in the picture below every time it is clean. No other shirt in his closet can compete with the “Best Day Ever” shirt. It’s like Jerry’s “Golden Boy” shirt.

That’s all for now. My mom took Marshall to church, Glenn’s downstairs on the treadmill, and I’m going to take some pain meds and watch the Wire. Peace out!

I’m getting my new boobs today! Hooray!

If you have been following along our blog for a bit, you probably know that back in June, I found out I have the BRCA 2 gene mutation.

I don’t talk about a lot of the details with the gene mutation because honestly it scares me when I dig into all of it BUT, I have chosen and will continue to do everything in my power to control what I CAN control and to have PEACE about what I can’t control.

A very brief explanation of what I’m dealing with here:

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are genes that EVERYONE has, these genes produce tumor suppressor proteins. When one of the genes is mutated, you do not have the protection to repair damaged DNA and cells, and you are more likely to develop alterations that can lead to cancer. This gene mutation was discovered by a crazy smart scientist in 1994. So, when my Grandma had breast cancer in 1989, the mutation wasn’t even discovered.

The mutated gene can be inherited from your mother or father and if one of your parents carries the mutation, your risk of inheriting it is 50 percent.

My mom is the culprit for me- my Grandma is the culprit for her and we believe my Great-Grandpa is the culprit for my Grandma. (He died of prostate cancer). Sadly, this means Marshall and any of my future children will have to be tested as well. But, this is not something to worry or even think about until they are much older.

So, here we are today. I’m getting breast implants today, not something you do every Friday. The recovery time for this surgery is 4 weeks, but my plastic surgeon likes to tell me she might let me off early. Either way, it won’t take near as much out of me physically or emotionally as the first surgery.

I don’t have anything profound to say right now. I feel like I should, but I don’t, I’m just glad to move on. My mom was right though, I do feel stronger and more confident to face hard situations.

Oh an I am really freaking hungry right now because my surgery isn’t until 1pm and I haven’t been able to eat since last night.

    Cheers to new boobs.

Oh and also- Marshall and I got to go to Florida to visit my sister, her kids, aunts, uncles and grandparents over the weekend.

A few things I learned from this experience:

    • You don’t have time to be scared to fly when you are managing a crazy 19 month old.
    • Only an insane individual would chose to fly with that kid again. I’ve done a few hard things in life and that might top the list. We were up and down the aisles at least 40 times, there was a temper tantrum on the floor in the back of the plane, random ladies were trying to help me, I cried twice and flight attendants were giving me free drinks.
Here are some pics from our trip:

Oh wait- first you need to watch this video, apparently Marshall likes to dance with Indians:

This was from our flight down- the flight home was MUCH worse.

Marshall and my Grandma (Mimi to him) talking about the water & the ducks
With my sisters Ericka & Shelby, Marshall, and niece and nephew Giovanna and Gunner.
I could ask you questions here, but what’s there to to ask?! haha…. Have you ever had breast implants?

Do you know anyone who has the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation?

I’ll give you $500 dollars if you take on trying to fly with Marshall Hein. Kidding. Kind of.

I hadn’t done an actual speed workout since August. After the Indy Women’s Half, which was not a good race for me, I was only left with 4 weeks before I had to hang things up for a couple of months, so I just had fun with unstructured care free running. Which I believe is important to do no matter who you are, surgery or no surgery!

I’ve done some moderately hard tempo runs and some fast finish miles here and there but yesterday I decided to do mile repeats. I’ve been focusing on building distance and not speed. But I really wanted that “how I feel after I kill a speed workout feeling”. So naturally, I did the mile repeats. They always hurt and I’m always left with the feeling of, I just worked hard for that and I’m glad I did- now let me conquer the rest of this day.

If I was in the peak of my training, I would likely do 5 repeats and I honestly considered doing 5, but instead finished with a strong 4. As I was finished up the 4th, I let the thought enter my head again to perhaps do 5, but decided I was happy with the effort I put out and there was no need to prove that I could in fact do a 5th. Sometimes it is important to get the extra in and push through it, but sometimes it’s equally as important to end feeling strong knowing that you can keep pace and crush the last repeat.

I have done a good job listening to my body for the MOST part in this post surgery journey, minus 2-3 runs….. (remember this one… ouch… I do) when most of my body was ready but a few areas were not). Today, I knew 4 was enough, and I was perfectly content with it.

The workout went down like this:

    15 minute warm up

    4 X 1 Mile @ 6:25, 6:22, 6:22, 6:15 with quarter mile jogs between sets.

    15 minute cool down

Building a high mileage base has helped with my confidence for a workout like this. If you think about running around 7-10 miles most days of the week, then 4 mile repeats, while the pace might be hard and taxing does not seem like that many miles. I can mentally wrap my head around less than 26 minutes of hard running.

I do believe I’ll be focusing more on the high miles rather than the speedy speedy stuff through the rest of my Boston training though. It’s what makes me happy right now and is much less stressful than the pressure of speed work.

I know I’ve said it a lot recently, and I’ll probably say it many more times; I really don’t know if there is a PR in April, but workouts like this and my 20 on Saturday are giving me confidence that it could be within reach. The 4 week recovery after next week won’t be nearly as intense as the 6 weeks I had back in October, not to mention this surgery won’t take as much out of my physically.

Regardless of all that talk, I’m starting to enjoy my running in a different way. Although I have been a mom for a year and a half now, my alone running time has become more and more valuable and helpful for my sanity as of late. I haven’t been seeing it as a task I need to get done as much as I used to, I’ve been seeing it more as a freedom.

I’ve always enjoyed what running brings me, but the freedom right now has been something I’ve needed more than ever recently. I love that I have chosen to stay home with Marshall and I by no means have it rough at all. (My sister does this with two kids and her husband is overseas for months at a time… I know I have it made) But man no matter how you slice it being in charge of another human being all day everyday can just wear you down sometimes and running has proven to be my saving grace time and time again. I honestly don’t know how people do it if they don’t workout. I would be crazier than I already am without it.

That being said, I’ll just say I feel like the luckiest lady alive that I get to be Marshall’s mom.

Children’s Museuming…. what we do in between naps once a weekish to get out of the house! Pretty sweet to live so close to such an awesome place.
My dad was in Indy this week taking my mom to the airport & asked us to go to the RV show at the fairgrounds. Sure, why not? And these boys sure are cute with their popcorn. Also, I’m pretty sure Marshall mattered the word PEE while we were there.
    What’s your favorite speed work?

Do you prefer speed or distance? Both?

Yay! I’m super happy I knocked out 20 miles today.

It’s definitely not necessary to already be doing a 20 mile run for a marathon that is on April 21st. But I’ve had it in my head that I wanted to get one in before my surgery that’s quickly approaching. (two weeks from yesterday) I’ll be taking four weeks off and wanted this for my confidence and sense of accomplishment more than anything. Come on, everyone loves the sense of satisfaction a 20 miler gives you.

I haven’t been following a real plan these past few weeks, but I have an idea in my head with what I want to accomplish each week give or take some miles and just get it done.

The run today felt good. I felt strong, confident and owned it. I did not want to run too hard, but settled into a comfortable pace early on that was a little speedier than I had anticipated. For the first 10 miles, I reminded myself over and over again to not pick it up and remain consistent, so that I didn’t crash in the final stretch.

I ran with my watch underneath my arm warmers and only peaked at it 4-5 times total during the whole run. I wanted to run based on feel, not what my watch said. I had a good idea what paces I was putting out though. Speaking of my arm warmers- I felt perfect in long tights, a tank top and arm warmers… I saw so many people in coats out running. I feel like I looked underdressed but I’d have been burning up in long sleeves, seems like almost every person I saw was overdressed!

I also ran with music today, which is something I rarely do during outdoor runs.

Three reasons I usually don’t run with music outside-

    • Safety- which I let slide today since it was Saturday morning and I knew the monon would be hoppin with people anxious to get outside after the week we’ve had weather wise.  I did have my mace on me though!
    • I use my phone for music and have yet to find a holder that works so I just carry it, which is kind of annoying. (any armbands I’ve found to hold the iPhone are huge! I don’t even have particularly small arms, but they are way too big.)
    • I race without music, so I like to simulate that in outdoor runs. Especially a long run. I don’t think it’s totally neccesary to always do that though.
I do think the music motivated me, but I also think the run would have panned out the same without it.

Since the roads are still iffy with ice, slush and whatever, I ran straight up the monon to Carmel & back. I would have preferred to run downtown and around there and back, but this was my best bet for less stop & gos. I’m not one to mind stop & go, slush and what not usually but I felt like just running and not messing with it today.

    Splits:

    Mile 1- 8:17

    Mile 2- 7:57

    Mile 3- 7:53

    Mile 4- 7:53

    Mile 5- 7:49

    Mile 6- 7:51

    Mile 7- 7:52

    Mile 8- 7:47

    Mile 9- 7:43

Mile 10- 7:45 – Turnaround in Carmel yay!

Mile 11- 7:36 – Tell myself to keep it in check so I can speed up last 5 or at least hold pace!

Mile 12- 7:52 – Gel (peanut butter Hammer)

    Mile 13- 7:50

    Mile 14- 7:29

    Mile 15- 7:35

    Mile 16- 7:28

    Mile 17- 7:24

    Mile 18- 7:24

    Mile 19- 7:27

Mile 20- 7:15 – get home girl. shower. food. water. kid. couch. It all awaits you, so move it.

    Average Pace: 7:42

    Total Time: 2:34

The legs felt a bit heavy but just what you would expect. Nothing crazy. I thought about how the last time I set out to run 20 miles, it was a big fail. I thought about what I put my body through just 3 months ago and how thankful I am that I CAN be running 20 miles, I thought about the alone time I was having and appreciated it, I thought about how far an Ironman is and in comparison how short 20 miles is, (I’m just about finished with Chrissie Wellington’s book, “A Life without Limits“- read it people! So inspiring), I thought about how good finishing this run and finishing my next marathon will feel. And I thought about keeping form. That’s really about it. Nothing too deep.

There are a lot of mind games that can happen in a 20 mile run. Just like in the marathon, it WILL BE overwhelming if you think of the total distance all at once. But, if you chose to stay in the mile, right where you are, and evaluate your body one step at a time, you’ll be doing yourself a service. What you chose to do now will effect how you will feel at the end. Well isn’t that true for most things in life?

I’m feeling content going into surgery with this & the past few weeks under my belt. I do not feel up to par with my speed compared to last year in my shamrock training but distance wise, I’m there.

And I think my body will thank me for a little rest. (even if it won’t really want an entire 3-4 weeks!)

Alright, I basically just gave you an entire race recap over a 20 mile run. Oh, you just wait until I actually race again. haha.

Does anyone know of a good iPhone holder for your arm that isn’t huge?

Are you doing a spring marathon? If so when will you do your first 20 miler (if you do 20 milers!)

What do you do in a 20 mile run to keep yourself from getting overwhelmed?

I followed up the next week with 45 miles. Including my longest run yet since my surgery. (18.2 Mi). That run felt pretty darn good at the time (hard, but good) and I ran it pretty quick for where I’m at right now. I paid for it in the evening. Not too terribly, but my body let me know I probably ran too hard.
Two reasons my mileage went down quite a bit from the 60 to 45 mile week- legs were dead and I was juggling travel stuff with the holidays.

    This weeks rundown:

Monday- 7 easy treadmill miles (average pace 8:20)

Tuesday- 4 easy with Glenn, Marshall & Cadence. Sadly, I think we underdressed Marshall & he wasn’t happy. I felt terrible. (average pace 7:50)

Wednesday- 10 miles easy, 6 with the Rusted Bear crew, 4 on my own, fast finish for last 2 miles (average pace 7:54)

Thursday- Rest Day- when Glenn got home from work- I bolted out the door and went to foot finese for a massage. Marsh & I didn’t leave the house all day & I had to get out of the house, but didn’t want to deal with the gym at 5:30pm on January 2nd! Figured the next best thing was a massage… 🙂

Friday- 7 easy treadmill miles (average pace 8:06)

Saturday- 15 miles, 10 with Ashley, 5 on my own. Easy paced, with the big fun hill in Crown Hill. It was gated off to traffic and there wasn’t much traction, we had fun bouncing around making it to the top. Running down was the best though. We were sad neither of us had our phone to take a picture because it was so pretty at the top of the hill. (average pace 8:00)

Sunday- 7 easy, glorious snow filled miles with Cadence (average pace 8:17)
    Total: 50 Miles
After my 7 with Cadence on Sunday.
Fun in the snow before our power went out!

Overall I felt pretty good all week. No speed, but I honestly don’t think my body is ready for too much speed. When I over exert my chest is achy and I’ve had cold sweats at night a few times from it.
My reconstruction surgery is set for Friday, January 24th. YAYAYAYAY!!!! Less than three weeks away. I had in my head that I wanted to do a 20 miler before the surgery, just to really solidify my base. I can’t say if that will happen or not just yet. If it does happen, it will probably need to be this coming weekend, as I’m going to Florida to visit my sister the following weekend I don’t think it will happen then. I could, but it’s doubtful. Although, while I do enjoy cold weather running, I’m not gonna be mad about running half naked in Florida.
Regardless if I do the 20 or not pre surgery, I’m happy with where I’ve set myself up for coming back post surgery. The recovery from this one will be 4 weeks and my plastic surgeon has told me she might release me a bit early. I’ll still have to be careful those first few weeks back though.
I have to be honest- even though this surgery is small potatoes compared to the mastectomy, I’m a little anxious about it. I don’t know if anyone ever gets used to getting put under anesthesia. Either way, I’m still new at it, so I’m still nervous.
I am however, hella excited to get these expanders out. They are rock solid. Seriously, the more the doctor filled them, the harder the got. I’m walking around with a 2 big rocks in my sports bra. Brace yourself if you go in for a hug, it ain’t soft. And if you don’t go if for one, I probably will, because I’m a natural born hugger. Even to strangers.
I’ll leave you with this gorgeous picture Glenn took of Cadence today on the monon. Gorgeous.

Did you have any fun snow runs?

Did anyone venture out in the negative 15 Indianapolis temps? I’m sure it’s much colder for some of you, but we’re not used to that here!

    How cute is my dog?

    Merry Christmas all!

The picture above is one of the pictures we took for our Christmas card. No pants, of course.

And what did we get Marshall for Christmas? A pad of paper and some new crayons. He had so many gifts from all of our families and we try hard to keep things as minimal as possible (which is nearly impossible with a 18 month old.) When he’s a little older, we’ll step up the game a little bit, but the kid doesn’t need anything and beyond that, he doesn’t care.
Does he look like he cares? Best Day Ever.

We had a great Christmas and I wanted to put some cutie pictures up but this post isn’t about Christmas really, it’s about running. Are you really surprised?
I had an intense addiction to running last week. The addiction is always there, but last week I was more obsessed than usual.

I ran 60 miles, which is only the second time I’ve run that many in one week. The other time was my peak week of Shamrock training in the spring. That’s a crap ton of miles for me. I naturally land around 40 if I had to guess.

This is what the week looked like:

Monday AM 12 Mile Progression Run starting @ 8:20, finishing @ 6:30. Last 30 minutes pretty hard.

    Total: 12 Miles
Tuesday AM  7 Miles, Recovery @8:34, PM  3.6 Miles, Recovery @ ? No watch (running dog)
    Total: 10.6 Miles

Wednesday AM 12 Miles Easy @7:30-8:30, PM 3.5 Miles, Recovery, no watch, running the dog.
    Total: 15.5 Miles

Thursday  AM  5.5 Miles Recovery @ 8:20 PM 2 Miles Recovery, No watch, running the dog.

    Total: 7.5 Miles

Friday AM 12.2 @ 7:20-8:20 w/ incline work. 35 minutes- 80 minutes alternate 2.0 inline at 7:41 pace for 2.5 min, back down to .5 incline for 2.5 min @ 7:30, cool down 10 minutes

    Total: 12.2 Miles

Saturday – 3.5 Recovery Run , No watch, running the dog

    Total: 3.5 Miles

Sunday – Rest me. Body needs it, mind didn’t want it. Addiction.

    Week Total: 60 Miles
I thought I might have done a 10 miler on Sunday, but I really just didn’t want to run or workout or anything. So I didn’t. And to be honest, I felt anxious about it. And that’s not really ok, but there could be worse things.

Glenn ALWAYS tells me to be careful and not to ramp back up too quick. He is also the same person who plants the seed that if I ran higher mileage weeks, I’d probably be a lot faster. Plant that seed and I run with it.

I’ve been back at it for 7 weeks now– the week before last I ran 50 miles (8 more than I had planned) which was a pretty big jump from the week before and this week I ran 60, another pretty big jump.

A general rule to follow is to not up your mileage by much more than 10% each week & after Glenn’s hamstring injury last spring, he is particularly adamant about it.

I told him, I know my body and wouldn’t run more than I can handle or do more than I can handle. Honestly I’ve only done that a couple times in my life- one being the other weekend in Crown Point when I ran 12 miles way to fast up and down some stupid hills. Thankfully I’ve never been prone to running related injuries, I hope that streak continues.

BUT, he also tells me I need to be following a plan. Right now though, I’m enjoying making things up as I go and just running as much as I want when I want.
So that puts as at Christmas morning, which was pretty quiet for us, since both of my sisters weren’t in town. My parents have a pretty nice home gym so, as soon as my mom finished rowing- Glenn hopped on the bike & I hoped on the treadmill. They are storing the Boston Marathon treadmill that my sister won at their house until she has space for it- and man it is freaking nice.

I ran a big handful of sections of the Boston course on the treadmill- the incline just moves as you go- even descends which is crazy. And the whole time there is a video of the course like you are in the race. This treadmill is insane- better than the treadmills at the gym. I was originally going to run outside- but was itching to try this treadmill and ended up doing 18 miles. My original plan was 17, but then I had started the last section of the marathon and it would have ended at 18.2, so I couldn’t get myself to stop. Then I almost said heck with it and ran on in for 20, but dang I’m glad I didn’t, because once again, I did overdo it a bit and felt pretty ick last night. I probably ran a little too fast and a little too far.
Since the Treadmill is so new- my parents hadn’t put the ledge on it which would hold my kindle, and their TV wasn’t loud enough to hear, and I didn’t have my headphones- so I basically ran the whole 18 just watching the video of the marathon course. This was fine for the day but after once or twice, it would get boring.
And just a note- I don’t usually do my long runs on the treadmill, but I am not opposed.

I love starting a holiday with a good workout.

    How as your Christmas?

Do you start your holidays with a workout?

Have you tried the Boston Marathon Treadmill?
