Dr. Kary is a Sports Performance Physician at St. Vincent Sports Performance. This will finish up the first series of St. Vincent interviews that have left me with a huge take away that I need to strength train more.

Dr. Kary completed his undergraduate studies at Anderson University in Anderson, IN with a degree in Athletic Training. He earned his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 2003. His family medicine residency training was completed at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis followed by a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the University of Notre Dame Sports Medicine Fellowship in South Bend, IN. He served as an assistant team physician for football and basketball and head team physician for men’s soccer while at Notre Dame.Dr. Kary has been a Team Physician for Butler University since 2007. He is also a Team Physician for USA Track and Field, Bishop Chatard High School, and Ed Carpenter Racing. His work as a sports medicine physician has included serving at the USA Track and Field Championships, USA National Gymnastic Championships, FINA World Swimming Championships, Big Ten Basketball Championships, and numerous other national/international sporting events. He has served as the Medical Director for the Carmel Marathon and the Geist Half Marathon.

In this episode we get to hear how Dr. Kary got into his career, his running background, running a 2:57 marathon at 41 and how he trains with the run less run faster process to keep injuries away. We end the conversation with 5 tips for the everyday runner.

I hope you enjoy this episode! I plan to do a couple more St. Vincent interviews so make sure you send me an email with any questions you might have and I’ll be sure to include them upcoming conversations with the Professionals at St. Vincent!

Scott Jurek is a Husband, Father, Author and one of the names we will never forget in the world of Ultra running. Most known for his 7- consecutive straight victories at The Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run, he has also taken victories in  the 153-mile Spartathlon, the Hardrock 100 and the Badwater 135-Mile Ultramarathon.

In their newest venture – in 2015, Scott and his wife Jenny recount their adventure on the Appalachian Trail in their new book “North” – Scott put in the miles and Jenny put her heart into crewing him and supporting him on this big adventure. He took the Appalachian Trail speed record that year, averaging nearly 50 miles a day over 46 days. He also once held the United States all-surface record in the 24-Hour Run with 165.7 miles: 6.5 marathons in one day – which in this episode he mentions he might have interest in chasing that down again.

Scott is well known for his vegan diet and is an encourager to runners of all abilities to live a healthy lifestyle. He is also a New York Times-bestselling author for his memoir, Eat & Run, and his journey running the the Tarahumar in the Copper Caynon is recounted in the popular book,  Born To Run.

In this conversation, you’ll get to hear about Scott’s career and passion for the sport, his back story, which victories meant most to him and how he remained mentally tough during dark times in races and events like the Appalachian Trial. You’ll also get to hear from  his wife, Jenny about their time on the Appalachian Trail and what’s next for them. No fear friends- Jenny will be back on for a solo episode where we’ll get to hear all about her story as well.

Denise McMillan joins me on the show today. She has a unique story in that she didn’t become a runner until the age of 49 after overcoming Breast Cancer. Just five years later, she has run three marathons and created friendships that will last a lifetime. Denise talks about how the friendship side running might in fact be the most meaningful part to her. Denise has two daughters and one granddaughter and works in marketing.

I met Denise a few years ago and instantly connected to her positive nature and really funny personality. I knew I wanted to have her on the show right from the start and I’m so excited that we have finally made this happen. In the episode, we talk about her life growing up in New Zealand, getting married really young and getting through a lonely time during her divorce. We also talk about walking through Breast Cancer and coming out on the other side and finding so much freedom in running. I know many people will relate to different pieces of Denise’ story and you will take something with you from this conversation.

Enjoy!

Episode 81: Molly Ludlow

Today’s episode of I’ll Have Another is the first ever re-release of the show. I’m really excited about this though because I’m sitting down with Molly this coming week for a follow up episode that will be released next Friday. This episode was recorded in the spring of 2016 while Molly was training for the 2016 Olympic Trials in the 800 meters. If you follow track & field at all, you probably know that Molly placed 4th at the trials for the second time, missing a spot on the Olympic team by .004 seconds. When we talk next week, we will get into moving on from that and what she’s up to these days! After running professionally for Saucony for several years, Molly is focusing on some other things and you’ll get to hear all about that.

But FIRST. This was the write up from the first time she was on the show:

Molly is a BADASS. After signing a soccer scholarship at Indiana University, she only played one season before deciding to switch sports and walked-on to the track team.

Molly went on to become one of the best 800m runners in the Big Ten and even set two indoor school records. After falling just short of making the 2012 Olympic team, Molly went on to have an outstanding 2012 season as she ran four sub-two minute times. She is currently training for the 2016 Olympic Trials which you will hear all about in this podcast episode!

In this episode, we of course chat about running, but also her wonderful family, the bachelor, snapchat, books on tapes… you name it! I learned a lot about track talking with Molly and was inspired by how powerful of a runner she is, her motivation and her drive to compete at such a high level… (the highest).

Accomplishments:

2-time All-American at Indiana University, 800 meters

American Record Holder 4X800 meters, 2015

IAAF Beijing World Championships qualifier, 800 meters, 2015

Bronze Medalist 2014 USA Championships

I’ll Have Another Podcast Episode 59: Naomi Pescovitz

Naomi is a news anchor for the Indianapolis NBC affiliate -Channel 13-WTHR. She graduated from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and has since worked for several news stations around the country until recently landing here in her hometown of Indianapolis. Naomi and I met when she came out to my house to cover a story on me when I was on the cover of Women’s Running Magazine.  We have kept in touch since the interview and she is one of the sweetest, most genuine people you’ll meet.

In this episode, we go all over the place, from career to health, to on-line dating. Naomi and I both have the BRCA gene mutation putting us at a high risk for breast and ovarian cancer, so we talk about our experiences and choices in dealing with that. We also talk about the tragic lose of her father and how she coped and still copes with that. Though Naomi hates the term “foodie”, she is all over the food scene and dishes on her favorite restaurants.

I felt like we could have talked for hours– enjoy this conversation with Naomi!

Last week Russell crossed over the one month mark. I don’t have a cute sticker picture or any specific picture on that particular day, but I do know that his hair is still better than my own hair and probably your hair too. I’m terrible at baby books and all that kind of mom stuff, but I figured if I wrote some stuff on here, I could look back on it later and I’ll be glad I have the records.

We’ll hit 6 weeks on Thursday – which is always the time when people tell you you hit a turning point. Things settle down a bit, it’s still really hard because everyone’s tired but you find some sort of rhythm in the chaos. At least that was so for the first two.

At 6 weeks post delivery, I’m starting to feel like myself a bit more and excited to start working out again. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still feeling the hormone crazies a fair amount, but I’m feeling a little less hazy. I’m a stickler of waiting the full 6 weeks to start running again after babies and surgeries, but I think more than anything for the reason that I enjoy the downtime. I enjoy it enough to totally celebrate it, but I miss running/exercise enough that I welcome it back with open arms. I started taking Louis to the Y when he was only 6 weeks old but am not sure I’ll go down that road so soon with Russ. He already had a cold at three weeks and it was miserably for all parties. The Y never got Lou sick though so who knows, maybe I’ll roll the dice. Momma is much happier with her workout time.

russiu

At one month. He’s up an down all night long, eating three different people’s breast milk like a champ- though the weird thing about giving your kid other peoples breast milk is that you have no idea what that person might have ate on a particular day and if it’s upsetting his tummy at all. We have about 4 more weeks of breast milk left for him and I’ll likely start incorporating some formula with it soon. What a gift these women have donated to our baby boy.

His brothers adore him and at this point we all kind of think he looks more like Marshall/Me rather than Louis/Glenn. (Everyone says Marshall looks like me and Louis looks like Glenn) Though he seems to maybe have Glenn’s nose so maybe he’ll be a Marshall/Louis hybrid.

That’s all I got.

I’m here to tell you WHY I LOVE the 500 Festival Mini Marathon.

I ran this race for the first time in 2005. It was my very first half marathon. My mom, dad and one of my sisters did it too. My sisters and I actually just recorded my third podcast episode and we discuss the experience.  (More on the podcast in an upcoming post) I ran the first 6 miles with my mom and then finished on my own. I wasn’t trained- had ran around 6 miles for the longest run leading up. It was so hard. In the 10 years since that first time, I’ve done it 8 of the 10  years. And it’s fun every time.

Once you’ve ran a few half marathons, it’s easy to jump on the bandwagon of “Oh the mini is too crowded”. People who have done it a few times, sometimes think, I’ve been there done that, I don’t like it, there are too many people…. It’s only for first timers. I’m here to say that I am no first timer and I LOVE the mini. Here’s why:

  • It’s an amazing event for our city. HELLO- it brings thousands of people into Indy and is great for the local economy. Duh.
  • It’s fun. Stop taking yourself so seriously. You aren’t trying out for the Olympic team and it’s not a big deal if you have to weave around in the first few miles. If you really want to avoid that- run a race beforehand to get yourself a starting spot in a closer to the front corral. Last year I ran a 1:38 starting in something like corral F (which is sort of far back for that time) and it really wasn’t all that bad. I mean there was plenty of weaving, a bathroom break, and it was fine.
  • How fun is it to see our city filled with people full of energy and happiness (or despair if you check in on them at mile 10) all morning. You’ve got first timers, people who do it every year, people running for fun, people running with a family member or friend who are doing the race for the first time ever, people trying to PR, people running for a charity close to their heart. There are SO many reasons they are out there testing their limits or just having fun and it’s a good thing. Who cares if you have to bump elbows with some of them for the first few miles?
  • It’s the 40th running of the 500 festival mini AND the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. That is cool.
  • You get to run through Haughville. You might say it’s a dumpy part of town, but I say, open your eyes when you run through and think about how maybe you could be a part of making it better.
  • Speedway is totally the new “in” part of town with Big Woods, Dare Devil — I noticed how cute it was and how much it had changed already last year when we ran through. My friend who runs the speedway running club told me I won’t even recognize it this year.
  • The finishing shoot is amazing- they play old clips from the 500 which is so cool. The stretch on New York is long, but it’s a fun and fast last mile with plenty of people cheering you along the way.

This is the breakdown of my 500 Festival Mini Marathon Experiences:

  • 2005 – First Half Marathon Ever- along with my mom, dad and one of my sisters. Nobody was prepared. We all wanted to die. I ran a 1:59:52. My goal halfway through the race became to break 2:00. The longest run leading up to it was 6 miles. I was REALLY proud of that sub 2 hours. I so wish I could find a picture. Sad face.
  • 2006 – Started dating Glenn this year and convinced him to run it with me. I think he beat me though. No he did. I just checked. He ran a 1:46:24 and I ran a 1:47:15. At least he didn’t walk. When he ran his first 5K with me the year before, he had to take a walk break halfway through. The best part about the picture below- well there are a lot of best parts, but Glenn is rocking a cotton pizza express shirt that said “I get it every night” and you better believe that cotton shirt had blood streamed down the front of the shirt at the end from his bloody nipples. We didn’t know about body glide back then. I can’t even talk about the leg chaffing I experienced. Because my legs don’t not touch. (There’s an inside joke there; after the race, as I was basically crying from the leg chaffing pain, I looked over at my mom who had ran too and asked her if she had the same issue, to which she responded with “My legs don’t touch”) So that will forever be etched in my mind. My legs touch, but my moms legs don’t touch. Whatever man. Pro leg touching over here. (No bashing my mom, she’s great, these are just the things I just like to call her out on)

glenn

  • 2007 – We ran again, Glenn ran 1:52:14 and I have no clue what I ran, because I must have used someone else’s bib. There is no record of Lindsey Andersen running, but I did run it that year.
2007mini

2007 Mini Marathon

  • 2008 – This was the year, we got married, bought a house and ran our first marathon. We did this as a training run for the marathon. I ran a 1:37:30 and Glenn ran 1:37:45. This is actually a funny story, because we started the race together and broke apart around mile 6 and never saw each other again until the finishing shoot… where I was in front. Sorry bout’ ya Glenn. Your soon to be wife won. But really because of this race, I realized it was a possibility that I could try for a BQ on that first marathon. It planted the seed of confidence I needed. (keep in mind BQ standards were 5 minutes slower back in the day) Oh my gosh. We were babies.

babies

  • 2009 – This is the year I trained senior citizens at the John H. Boner Community Center to walk the 13.1. It was a long process, but it was pretty cool. I spent a lot of hours walking with this group and riding my bike next to them in the months leading up to the race. We must have been newly weds, because I somehow convinced Glenn to walk the whole race with us. It took us over 4 hours. And like Mildred always said “who said we couldn’t do it.” Mildred was one of the seniors I worked with who is no longer with us- she actually wasn’t one of the seniors who was able to do the race, but that was one of her favorite phrases and I carry it on. And let me tell you- this was an experience these women will never forget. What an accomplishment.

SEniorGRoup

  • 2010: The year we thought we were too cool. I actually think I had Glenn working all day cleaning up one of the seniors houses. There are stories for another day of all the things I had Glenn doing when I worked at the JHBCC. He’s moved furniture, put together desks, rode around on holiday lights tour of the city, made chili, took the day off work to help me with a picnic for 350 senior citizens. I was really good at bringing him into my work. For some reason, he’s never brought me into his… he must not trust my spreadsheet skills.
  • 2011: The year I coached a bunch of Tech HS kids and ran with them: This was part of The Super Bowl Legacy project that I was proud to be a part of. When the Super Bowl came to Indianapolis, the community center that I worked at was heavily involved in all of the efforts to revitalize the city- specifically the near eastside. This was one of several amazing projects that came about due to the Super Bowl Legacy project. Also, my little sister SHELBY (who was rocking the pink hair way before it was cool, ran her first and only half marathon that year and wrote about it.
  • teamlegacy

2013mni

  • 2014: The Year Glenn ran & Marshall and I cheered. I had just ran Boston, was newly pregnant, but didn’t know it yet and was dealing with some series plantar fasciitis. Glenn ran a 1:24 and then I sent him home with Marshall so I could hobble/run home with my plantar fasciitis foot.

GLENN MINI

  • 2015: My first half post LouisIt was fun for the first half of the race and I worked hard for the second half. The second half ended up being a great confidence building run for what was to come over the summer and into the fall. (before I epically tore my plantar fascia) DAMN FEET.

INDYMINI

I haven’t full out raced the mini since 2008 right before our first marathon, but I’ll plan to do that sometime in the next couple of years. I do plan to run for sure this year, but not sure if it will be used as a race, training run or for fun run.

All this to say. I’ve only missed two years since the first time I ran this race. And now looking back, I’m sad I broke a good streak. You should get on the train too man. It’s fun. And you ain’t too cool to run it. Also- if you’ve never run a half marathon- this is a great place to start!

Have you ever run the 500 Festival Mini Marathon?

Are you running it this year?

What’s your favorite part of the race?

Why do you Mini?

You’ve got one more day to enter the Women’s Running Cover Runner Contest.

  • Submissions are closed tomorrow September 28th
  • Don’t be shy to nominate yourself!
  • Nominate a friend who you know won’t submit but you know deserves it!
  • It really takes 30 minutes to apply. Just know what you want to say and speak from your heart.

Last year when I applied, I was nervous because I felt a little silly writing about myself like that. I knew what I wanted to say though and it just came out. Then, once I was selected for the top 9, I was nervous about recruiting votes. BUT Glenn encouraged me to just own it and go all in. People were super supportive and no one make me feel like I didn’t belong in that position. It was so cool to see my community of friends and family get behind me. (Indianapolis rocks by the way, our city was all about it! Several news stations and radio shows picked it up. Our “little” BIG city is really great and the running community specifically is like none other.

Here is the post I wrote about Last year’s cover. And even better- here is the article that Caitlyn wrote. Caitlyn was so fun to work with- for the actual interview, we simply sat down for a couple of hours and just talked about my story and what running has meant to me over the past 15 years, specifically that last year. My “Find your strong moment”. The rest of the Women’s Running crew was amazing to work with too- Jessie, Erin, Nicki- all so great and was so fun getting to know them.

Here are some pictures from the cover shoot last year:

makeup2

I had no idea what I was doing. I was 13 weeks pregnant with my second baby, so naturally was super tired and felt blah, but this crew helped me feel confident and beautiful. And provided coffee and good music. (Big Lou liked the coffee guys. I don’t think the two of us would have survived an all day photo shoot without it. )

I’ve also been able to develop a great relationship with Saucony which started with the contest as they were the sponsor last year. I am now a coach for the Saucony 26 Strong project and have had a great experience with that. (It’s a different sponsor this year for the contest, but still sure to be a great experience, I assume!)

I’ve been running consistently for 17 years. I joined my high school cross country team as a sophomore after being persuaded by my best friend and our coach. Right off the bat I was a head case runner. I would start getting nervous about cross country meets that were on Saturday four days prior. And we had meets every Saturday. That’s a lot of days of the week spent being nervous.  I was always a decent runner, but nothing special. I quit the cheerleading team my junior year because running was so much more important and I didn’t want to deal with both. If you know me though, you know I like to be a cheerleader, so that was kind of a big deal. Point is, running has been a huge part of my life for a really long time.

I remember my last meet in high school, it was the state meet, I was there because as a team we made it there, not because I would have made it individually. I was usually the number 4, 5 or 6 runner on our team. I sort of gave up in the race that day, I ran “hard” but I was checked out. I was so happy to be done with racing because it stressed me out so much and I was tired of always being nervous. I think this is relative to running marathons, even as a 32 year old now. I know a few people who are really good at running and training hard for a season and then taking a well earned, deserved and needed break. Back then for me, it was more mental. At this point in my life it’s both mental and physical. 30 + man, gotta be kind to the body.

So after high school, I ran recreationally in college, I ran consistently– probably 4 days a week if I had to guess. I still managed to gain the standard 10 lbs one gains in college, but I mostly just ran to keep that in check, along with use it as my personal therapy.

After college, Glenn and I started running half marathons and marathons on the regular. Throughout the post college years-(10 years.. WUT), I’ve run plenty of races for time, plenty for fun, plenty pregnant, plenty on a comeback and I’ve been the cheerleader for many.

Two kids, two surgeries and a couple of minor injuries, I’ve had my fair share of time on the sidelines. When people get injured and I see them get so in a funk… this is me saying, chill the F out. When people go on and on about their running injury, I usually roll my eyes. Calm down, it’s just running. Considering my love for running and the amount of time I’ve spent in the sideline position, I think I have the right. Now, someone like Glenn does not have that right, because he’s never really been injured except some minor achilles stuff, he’s never had to take a break for babies or surgeries. BUT I HAVE and I’m here to say it aint that bad so stop feeling sorry for yourself, stop complainng and spend your time on something else worthwhile.

I was planning to run Indy Women’s half marathon two weeks from today, for time. My goal was somewhere around 1:28 depending on the weather. I then had Chicago in 4 weeks later with the Saucony 26 strong project as a coach and mentor, and then Monumental, 4 weeks after that, where my plan was to run somewhere around 3:05. I was all set up for having a great half marathon and full marathon PR if the day was good and if the rest of my training paned out as planned. This whole tearing my plantar fascia has really screwed up those plans. I’m not sure how long I won’t be running, my guess is 4ish weeks. So the goals change, the whole rest of the year changes running wise, but that’s ok. Am I a little irritable? Yes, but not a huge deal. As soon as my foot isn’t too tender, I’m going to get in the pool and on the bike.

Runners get so hung up on their injuries and FREAK OUT and this week, I’m over here excited to wake up and just take a shower without feeling obligated to workout first. Today, I woke up at 6:30am and went to garage sales with my sister and her kids. (My kids were still asleep) This is something I would never normally do on a Saturday morning- because obviously I would need to run first. And when Lou got up from his nap, we went to waller around Broad Ripple (and indeed watched other people run along the monon- I did not envy a run in 90 degree weather). Of course this isn’t my new norm, but it’s my norm for these next few weeks. I like to run, I like to exercise and I want my fix, but I’m cool chillin for now. This is not my career, this is not my job. This is my hobby. And if I don’t have any other hobbies I can spend time on, I must be really boring.

Whether you are injured, you’re currently running, whatever is going on- if you aren’t throughly enjoying it, if you’re stressing out about times or getting overly nervous and letting it rule your thoughts, it’s probably time to evaluate why you’re running in the first place. It took me a decent amount of years to get to a place where I don’t stress much about it. I do get a healthy dose of nerves occasionally, but I’m working on that. I’m working on being more excited than nervous to put the work in and enjoy the work that’s been put in on race day.

Running will always be huge part of my life; our families life, but lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how it needs to not be number one.  I need to make sure other things like relationships- with God, Family and friends are not second to running. If you feel like something is missing there is probably a reason. Running can’t fulfill everything. It provides (first and foremost) a great endorphin buzz that serves as a natural antidepressant. It provides a great amount of self-confidence, an amazing community and is a healthy, great activity to have in your life, but it’s not everything.

That’s that.

So on that note- do you want to see my garage sale scores?

After Glenn’s run we went to Nicey Treat, one of our favorite places in Broad Ripple. He’s tired. He’s ready for the Barkley Fall Classic to come. And go. And take a break. By break, I bet he’ll go down to just chillin’ at 50 miles a week the rest of the year and NO racing.

cheers

Also, you see that cute necklace? It’s from Urban Kitty. One of my friends opened up a cutie consignment shop in Broad Ripple. Check it out, she rocks.

Here comes another training log.

Starting to feel like I am throwing together some consistent weeks and slowing bringing the mileage up. Back to back 60 mile weeks. 24 days in a row. I’ll take it at this point with the baby…well being a baby.

We joined the Y recently as a family, aside from Lindsey being an unpaid spokesman, it is really nice to have a gym again. I dropped LA Fitness about a year ago as I had no need for it. With Louis’s arrival in January my morning run routine was out the door so during the week I have become a lunch runner. I had been running outside all winter but now with the Y is logistically a lot simpler and convenient.

March 2 – 8

7 runs

61 miles

Monday: 5.8 miles @ Eagle Creek about 7:38 per mile

Tuesday: 6 miles on the treadmill at the Y. Had to check out the new membership. Did a hill climbing workout. Alternating between 2 and 5% incline over the 6 miles. Since I’m not really doing a lot of tempo or speed work…hills are a great strength builder. It was also 30*F and raining so the gym was an easy choice.

Wednesday: 7 miles @ the Y. 7:17 pace

Thursday: 45 minutes of climbing again at the Y covering 5.6 miles. This time incline work from 3 to 6.5%.

Friday: Chillin. 7 miles @ 8:09

Saturday: Lindsey was working in the morning and running outside so the boys and I hit up the Y again. It was a great spring day but treadmill again for me. 90 minutes easy. 12 miles. I am also pretty good at tweeting and running. Haha.

Sunday: Long run with a small workout. Getting back into shape is no fun that’s for sure. 2 hr run. 17.3 miles. Miles 10 – 16 were ran in a cut down marathon progression moving from 7:04 to 6:22. I was happy with the effort and definitely tired at the end. Plenty of time to get in shape.

There’s my 61 miles. Looking to get about 65 or so this week. With the spring thaw in full effect this week I am hopeful that secondary runs with Marshall and Cadence can be brought back after work. Besides that I am now officially signed up again as the 3:15 Carmel Marathon pacer. Are you running it? I’ll yell at you to keep up with me at mile 23 if you want.

Is it lunch yet?
