Obsie Birru just placed second at CIM running a 5 minute PR in a time of 2:30:30 just a couple months after running a 1 minute PR at the Twin Cities Marathon.

Obsie is Ethiopian born and moved to the United States at 12 where she grew up in Iowa. She ran for Grandview University and went to run with the NE Distance group post college.

Obsie works full time as an academic advisor, is pursing her masters degree and runs at a very high level- as you can see from her performances this fall! She has a contagious positive attitude about running, life and pursing dreams with a healthy balance. Make sure to look for Obsie to cheer her on at the marathon trials in February!

Ann Mazur just qualified for the Olympic Trials in the marathon at CIM! She was a part of a really special group of woman who will never forget that day or that finish line.  If you are anything like me you have been obsessing over the beautiful finish line pictures. Ann ran a time of 2:44:45, running a perfectly even split.

You may know of Ann from her popular instagram and business Runners Love Yoga.  She is a big believer that doing regular yoga will help you run faster. A subscriber to that method herself, she does daily yoga and peaked out her CIM training with 61 miles in her peak week, but averaged more like 50 miles a week. (My kind of marathon training!) Ann is also a passionate swimmer and teaches spin once a week; her intense cross training has served her well.

There is so much more to Ann’s story though and we get into a lot of it. She shares with us about running in the memory of her cousin Ian and what that means to her and how it’s strengthened her own faith after going through some really dark and trying times.

Ann was a walk on for Notre Dame (she ran with Molly Huddle in college!) and also has her PhD in English from UVA. She attributes both her running and yoga practice being a big part of helping her get through one of the hardest thing she has ever done- earning that PhD. Ann- whatever you do… don’t read these show notes with your PhD ways haha!!

It was a true joy and honor to talk with Ann and I really hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

Stephanie Bruce ran an impressive PR of 2:29:21 at CIM just weeks after placing 11th at the NYC Marathon. The PR was set from 7 years ago, a time she ran before she had both of her kids.

Steph runs for NAZ Elite and if you haven’t heard my first conversation with her where you can learn a little more depth about her career, make sure to check out episode 130 of the podcast!

In this episode Steph shares with us what the decision making process to go ahead and run CIM so soon after NYC looked like and what she actually felt like during the race where she did grab that PR. She also talks to us about her plans for 2019 and thoughts on going for another marathon before the trials in the fall. She is wise and kind and I always love chatting with her!

Enjoy!

Carly Gill put a big goal out there to the World when she went to run CIM a couple of weeks ago. She wanted to qualify for the Olympic Trials. She went out and raced with her heart and PR’d by 2 minutes running a 2:47 marathon. This was only her 5th marathon and she gave it her all.  She’s had a significant progression since her first marathon which she ran in 3:21 just a few years ago.

Carly didn’t get serious about running until recently and quickly realized she could run pretty fast. She runs and lives in NYC and ran her first sub 3 hour marathon on the streets of NYC back in 2016. She then went on to run Berlin in 2017, clocking a 2:49- a time she didn’t even realize was in her wheelhouse at the time.

In this episode of the podcast, Carly shares with us about her life growing up and then when she started running more seriously in the recent year. We hear a lot about her marathon progression, training and what it’s like to put yourself out there with a big goal and even when you come up a tad short, you can and should be proud of what you did. Carly wanted that trials time at CIM and though that didn’t happen- she walked away with a big 2 min PR and the knowledge that she hit her goal pace for 23 miles. What does that tell her? That with some more training and perfecting her craft, she will sure as heck hit that pace for 26.2 miles in the near future.

I had a follow up conversation with her coach Mario Fraoili after I talked with Carly and he gave me the inside scoop on what it’s like to coach an athlete like Carly and what he believes will help her meet her goals! You can find our conversation over on my patreon page – it is available to all supporters over there!

CIM Champion Emma Bates joins me today on the show! She debuted the marathon in 2:28 to take the win in California on Sunday. If you hadn’t hear of Emma before Sunday- you have now and you better put her on your radar for female runners doing big things! Emma is currently not a sponsored athlete and actually works as a nanny part time on top of running 100+ mile weeks. Just last year in fact she was working at both Whole Foods and as a Nanny while she trained and ran a half marathon PR of 71 minutes. You may have noticed her jersey said she was running for Camp Fire Relief- and you’ll learn all about that in this episode.

Emma lives in Idaho with her fiance who is also her coach and trains with him (he’s a sub 4 minute miler!) and she occasionally trains with a few other athletes he coaches as well. They are passionate about growing the running community in Idaho and have proven they have a smart method for training. Emma is excited to run in the 2020 trials and it’s clear she will use her platform to make waves for something more meaningful than just running itself.

Enjoy my conversation with Emma!

Mario is a runner, coach, writer and podcaster. Over the years, he’s coached athletes from across the spectrum of first time runners, Boston Qualifiers and people competing on World Championship Teams.

He shares his thoughts on running in his popular weekly newsletter the morning shakeout, and has somewhat recently ventured into the world of podcasting. From 2010-2016, Mario was the senior editor at Competitor magazine and has worked on numerous other projects in both the running and media spaces. He currently lives in California in the Bay Area with his wife Christine, four bikes and dozens of pairs of running shoes.

In this episode, we talk about how his love for running began, his career, The Morning Shakeout and we also get into some  behind the scenes podcasting talk as well as his coaching strategies. I have him give me his thoughts on what kind of training might be good for me to do post partum this time around to shoot for another marathon PR.  Mario runs competitively and crossed the finish line in 2:37 in the crazy conditions of Boston this year. He is a sub 2:30 marathoner and hopes to break that time once again. Enjoy my conversation with Mario!

Elite Marathoner and World Traveler Becky Wade joins me on the podcast today! In 2012 Becky traveled the World (22 countries) studying running culture in each place she went. She wrote a book called “Run the World” where she shares all about her experience; what she learned from 9 of the countries she spend the most time in and she also shares delicious recipes from the trip.

Becky ran her debut marathon at CIM soon after returning from her trip in 2013 to win the marathon in a time of 2:30. In this episode we talk about not only her future running goals of crushing the 2:30 barrier in the marathon, but also her passion for finding balance and love in things outside of running as well. She has a great perspective that we could all learn a little bit from and I hope you walk away feeling inspired to follow your dreams and creating a life for yourself that is multi-faceted.

Enjoy!

2017 was a BIG year for Sarah Bishop. She PR’d in nearly every distance and qualified for the Olympic Trials in the Marathon, only six weeks after winning the Marine Corps Marathon. She is the Mother of four daughters (two of whom are twins) and works full time as a construction site contractor as a business development director. She served in the Air Force for three years, where she met her husband, who is currently still serving in the Air Fore as an engineer.

Sarah ran in High School and College (D1 All American 800 meter runner) but she hung it up for quite a few years and didn’t start competitively running again until 2014 after having four kids. She found herself in a slump when her twins were 6 months old and needed to do something for herself, so she took up running again and never looked back. She is a motivated and driven person and this episode will inspire you to not set artificial limits on yourself and dream big. That’s what Sarah did when she decided to break 3 hours in the marathon, only to decide not too long after that that she could also qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials.

Episode 95 will round out the last of three interviews from ladies who ran CIM and rocked it. Lauren lives in Southern California (jealous!), is married to Henri and is the mom to Lavinia. Lauren ran in college and came back to running fast just a few years ago. She just ran a 2:44 marathon at CIM, qualifying herself for the Olympic Marathon Trials and taking 22 minutes off of her PR, which was 3:06. She talks about her training in this episode and what race weekend looked like and how even if things don’t go exactly as planned on race morning/weekend, you can still have a kick ass day.

Lauren is a cross country and track coach and also coaches runners on-line with her own coaching business. In this episode we also talk about the fact that she had a natural childbirth at a Birthing Center – as the mom of three, I just can’t even image. (Give me all the epidurals!) I’m always in awe of women you go natural and love hearing about the mental side of that – which Lauren credits to helping her become a tougher runner as well. Lauren is a listener of the show and those episodes are always super fun because listeners seem to be some of the best guests as they know the flow!

Enjoy this episode with Lauren!

I was just as excited as most of you about all the exciting stuff at CIM that I loaded up the interviews around it! So Sara Hall is BACK on the podcast to talk with us all about her experience running and winning the California International Marathon (CIM), just five weeks after running her marathon PR at the Frankfurt marathon in 2:27:21. She lead CIM from start to finish and was gunning for a course record. When she realized that was slipping, she focused on what else she could be excited about in the race and tells us how she stays positive even when an A goal might slip mid race.

In this episode, Sara also talks to us about motherhood and raising four daughters that her and her husband Ryan adopted from Ethiopia in 2015. Make sure you head back to episode 11 of the podcast to check out my first chat with Sara!
