Today on the podcast is Kyra Condie! Kyra will be competing for Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics in climbing. She is a pro climber and started climbing at age 11. Early on, she found out that she has idiopathic scoliosis so she had to have some pretty major surgeries as a young child. She had a spinal fusion to correct her more than 70 degree curvature and it took several months to recover. After recovering from that surgery, she started competing in climbing and she won her first major competition after that surgery. Since then, she has qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games and she has become a bouldering world cup finalist and is a regular at pro competitions around the US. She shares in this episode what it is like to climb as a professional. In this episode, Kyra also explains what the climbing competition will look like at the Olympic games.

Chris McDougall is the author of the wildly popular book “Born to Run.” He most recently released the book “Running with Sherman” and is making the book tour rounds. (I have read both and they are both wonderful!) Running with Sherman is the story of a donkey that his family rescued from an animal hoarder and nursed back to health – eventually even training for the burro racing championships in Colorado.

Chris was trained as a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press, covering wars in Rwanda and Angola before writing Born to Run, which was an international best seller. He is also the author of the book “Natural Born Hero’s” AND a little secret he lets us in on in this interview is there’s another book too… that most of us don’t know about.

Chris is married to his wife Mika (who also trained for the Burro racing championships!) and has two daughters. They live way out in the country surrounded by an incredible Amish community and enjoy that quieter, slower life. I was fascinated about that part of the book- hearing all about their everyday life out in the country.

Chris was so fun to talk to. I really didn’t know what to totally expect and he was one of the most authentic and easiest people I’ve ever talked with. I even got a lot of great parenting advice from him toward the end of the conversation, which felt serendipitous considering I just posted a full on parenting episode over on my other podcast “The Illuminate Podcast“. The positive parenting people want to help me! 🙂

Scott Jurek is a Husband, Father, Author and one of the names we will never forget in the world of Ultra running. Most known for his 7- consecutive straight victories at The Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run, he has also taken victories in  the 153-mile Spartathlon, the Hardrock 100 and the Badwater 135-Mile Ultramarathon.

In their newest venture – in 2015, Scott and his wife Jenny recount their adventure on the Appalachian Trail in their new book “North” – Scott put in the miles and Jenny put her heart into crewing him and supporting him on this big adventure. He took the Appalachian Trail speed record that year, averaging nearly 50 miles a day over 46 days. He also once held the United States all-surface record in the 24-Hour Run with 165.7 miles: 6.5 marathons in one day – which in this episode he mentions he might have interest in chasing that down again.

Scott is well known for his vegan diet and is an encourager to runners of all abilities to live a healthy lifestyle. He is also a New York Times-bestselling author for his memoir, Eat & Run, and his journey running the the Tarahumar in the Copper Caynon is recounted in the popular book,  Born To Run.

In this conversation, you’ll get to hear about Scott’s career and passion for the sport, his back story, which victories meant most to him and how he remained mentally tough during dark times in races and events like the Appalachian Trial. You’ll also get to hear from  his wife, Jenny about their time on the Appalachian Trail and what’s next for them. No fear friends- Jenny will be back on for a solo episode where we’ll get to hear all about her story as well.
