Week 3

Week 4

72 Miles

7 Workouts

2 Quality Sessions

Total for Cycle #2 of 7

135 miles

13 Workouts

5 Quality Sessions

Overall I am happy with where I am at in training thus far. The end of week 4 was kind of hectic but I was able to get things in.

To begin week 3 I tried a new workout , at least for me, the K (1,000 M or .62 miles) repeat. I am very familiar with the mile repeat but running a K repeat was kind of new to me. It was done at a pace faster then the mile…probably something similar to an 800 repeat.  I ended up with seven of them for the session. It was a heck of a workout and definitely something I would do again in training.

The rest of week 3 was pretty standard except for the long run on the weekend.  Lindsey had her 70.3 race Saturday and I was in charge of Marshall on Sunday, which was the slotted date for the week’s long run. I ended up switching Saturday and Sunday as doing the long run on Saturday while in Muncie for the race as that was going to a lot easier then trying to figure out 16 with Marshall. I could bang out 8 miles on the treadmill with him napping the next day no problem…but 16 would be tough.

I ended up doing the 16 when Lindsey was on the bike portion of the race. It was nice actually as I was able to run on closed roads and got to see her multiple times out on the bike course. I definitely got some funny looks from some bikers as I was running down the highway shirtless banging out 6:40s…they were like what the heck is this guy doing?!?!?! Finished up  the run and was able to hop on one of Greg’s bikes and see Lindsey multiple times while she was finishing her race.

Week 4 brought some craziness for the end of the week.
Monday ran, Tuesday ran, Wednesday ran. Nothing to report. I did nail my progression tempo run on Wednesday.
Thursday. Pearl Jam was playing Wrigley Field on Friday and I didn’t have tickets. I put in for tickets through the 10Club but didn’t score any…which was not surprising considering Pearl Jam fans are crazy and this show was one of the highest demand tickets  EVER!!! As it got closer to the show, I was  really trying to find a ticket…I couldn’t just help myself. I had the opportunity to purchase tickets through the Cubs Season Tickets Holders Pre-Sale but for whatever reason I decided to pass…I’m not sure what I was thinking. So I was left scrambling for a ticket week of. Long story short through the power of twitter I randomly found a girl in Northwest Indiana selling her ticket for face value (unheard for this show…people were getting $400-$500 per ticket) at about 11PM Thursday night. Looks like I’m going to the show tomorrow! Hello. I’ll figure out my runs later. Pearl Jam wins.
Get up Friday, do my run, fake it at work for a couple of hours and then head up to Chicago. Pick up my ticket. Get to Wrigley. Meet up with some friends. Showtime! If you don’t know Pearl Jam they are known for fan loyalty and for putting on legendary and lengthy shows so combine that with playing at Wrigley Field it was going to be a great night.
About six songs in…they make an announcement that they are playing one more song and then taking a break as some severe weather is getting ready to hit the area. Annoying. Whatever. No big deal. Band and staff thought it would be about 30-45 minutes later. 3 hours later! Still not playing as more weather came through. The band ends up coming back on stage at about 11:50 and plays until 2:00 AM when they were told they finally have to stop! It was great. Hard to beat this band.
Back to my running though…so I was scheduled to do 18 miles on Saturday and I just didn’t see that happening. I got up in Chicago and decided to do 11 miles along the Lakefront. That was terrible. It was probably the 3-4 hours of sleep but whatever. Over it. I needed to get back to Indy. I had Beerfest to attend with some friends.
I got back to Indy around 2:30, take a shower, and head out the door again for some Beerfest action. Well Beerfest is Beerfest. Great time but come 9:00 PM I am ready exhausted.
Sunday called for that 18 I switched out on Saturday. I didn’t have it in to run 18 on the road so I decided to head over to Eagle Creek West and run trails for 2 hours. It was a nice change of pace and it was great prep for my trail half race coming up in two weeks. I’d like to try and win so we will see what happens.
Overall, the end of week 4 was pretty nutty but I was able to get the miles in with some flexibility. I think that is key to marathon training success. You have to be persistence and diligent in your training but you also have to be flexible when things come up….like Pearl Jam concerts. Don’t be so obsessive that you keep yourself from doing things you really want to do once in a while.
Also thanks to Lindsey for my Christmas in July weekend!
How is everyone’s training going? Any Fall races? Anbody racing the Eagle Creek Half that I need to worry about? Did you go to the Pearl Jam concert?

Week 1 is in the bag. It finished yesterday with with a 14 mile fast finish run. That run was hard. Real hard. 14 miles was the furthest I have ran since returning from injury in April. Did I mention that it was hard? The first 10 miles were ran at about 6:50 and then the plan was to run the last 4 around 6:10-6:05….well that didn’t happen. Once I started the fast finish I could tell fairly early that I was not ready for it. My plan quickly changed to 3 miles and then I would give myself a mile cool down. I was able to hold about a 6:15 for the last three and then very gladly cool downed the last mile back to the house. In my mind it’s not a question of my fitness just a bad day towards the end. I tried to limit the fuel intake and it was a little humid out…so maybe it is my fitness. Whatever. I’m not worried about it. Not an excuse just what it is. I didn’t have it in me to finish it out strong yesterday.

Overall, Week 1 was quite productive.
7 runs.
56 miles.
2 quality stress workouts.
1 long run.
Bunch of core.
The other highlight…or lowlight…of the week would be the workout on Thursday. It called for 3×2 mile repeats @ 5:50-5:54 with 2:00 recovery. Good god…that thing sucked. I ran it on the Monon where I know mile markers like the back of my hand. I thought it would be a good thing…but as I did the workout it might not have been as I knew how long I had to go. Big mental battle to get through the workout. Wanted to quit. Wanted to stop. Wanted to slow down. It took a lot of coaching to get it done but I got it done and it felt great to get through it and hit the paces. The workout ended up being 9 miles total.
The week ahead has more of the same like week 1. Bunch of easy runs, one speed session, and a steady state 16 mile run this weekend. The speed session will be with the group that Lindsey and I have been doing for a couple of weeks now. **Shameless Plug** if you are Indy come join us. 5:30 AM on The Monon. We meet by Einstein’s. I am using a 14 day cycle for the quality phase of my Chicago plan…and so far I think it will work nicely for me. It gives me more stress workouts and keeps the long runs to the weekend. I am also starting to introduce secondary easy runs 1-2 times per week. I am hoping this will help me recover while still improve my aerobic capacity and efficiency from running more.
I guess the last thing is I am thinking about getting a new watch. I have ran with a Soleus for a couple of years now. It is super basic and gets the job done but I am thinking it is time for an upgrade. I would like to keep it simple still but I am looking for something that does better real time paces. A posted the question on The WWW and got some great feedback, especially from some runners that I really respect. The common theme was Garmin so I guess now it is time to decide which version: 210, 410, 610? Not sure yet. The 610 is pretty $$$ but looks to be pretty sweet. Not sure what to do.
In other news: Pearl Jam has a big announcement coming! Hello. Tour? Album? Jeff playing for the SuperSonics? Eddie on Idol? Only time will tell. Oh and if you think Pearl Jam stopped making music in the 90’s…don’t be stupid….or at least don’t tell me 🙂
Big Pearl Jam announcement coming…and did you see my clever ‘Lost’ reference?
Questions: What kind of watch do you run with? What do you look for in a watch? Want to run with me this weekend? Will you see Pearl Jam when they tour?
10’x10′ Booth ——- $1,300
10’x10′ Corner Booth ——- $1,400
10’x20′ Booth ——- $2,500

When I got into Lindsey’s car the other morning at 5:15 so we could head to the Back on My Feet Indy PH team meeting The Decemberists was blarring. This was not a real big surprise since the moment we bought The King is Dead on the way to Piney Point for the marathon the cd was been on constant rotation in the car. Hearing that familiar sound got me thinking about how they are coming to play White River State Park downtown on August 5th…I am really looking forward to that show. Then I got to thinking about all the other upcoming music I have this summer.

The Black Keys in Indy June 10, that is the night before Back on My Feet Indy tries their luck at a half marathon in Carmel…so that should make for an awesome weekend!!

Eddie Vedder solo on the Uke in early July @ the Fox in St. Louis with a couple other of Pearl Jam freaks. PJ releated roadtrips are always a plus.

Follow that with the aformentioned Decemberists in early August, and to round it all out will be The Avett Brothers in October.

Snuggled in between that folk rock/bluegrass jem of The Decemberists and The Avett Brothers is the possible weekend Pearl Jam festival. Nothing is official yet but the current rumor is that Pearl Jam will headling a “festival like” 3 day concert event @ Alpine Valley on Labor Day weekend. The internet is already a buzz as Mudhoney has announced Canadian tour dates around this time as the opener for Pearl Jam. One can only dream that the rumors become reality.

Lindsey will be joining me for everything except the Pearl Jam related activities. She lost her ticket to those after a sleeping incident at a Pearl Jam concert in DC in June 2008. I have never seen anything like it.

So my spur of the moment concert decision was to go the see Arcade Fire on Wednesday with Butters and some friends. Lindsey and I had talked about going but decided against since tickets were $50 and we didn’t really know Arcade Fire music that much. But Wednesday afternoon, Butters called me saying his buddy had an extra I could have for cheap…so I said why not I’ve heard good things about the show and have always enjoyed what I did hear.

Man was I glad that I went, they freaking ROCKED it hard on Wednesday. Great set, great energy. It was pretty cool to see 8 people stage trading instruments depending on the song. Arcade Fire was well worth it on Wednesday and I am know the proud owner of at least one Arcade Fire CD.

Hope to see everyone out at the Lawn over the summer enjoying the music.
