Episode 201: Emily Toia https://lindseyhein.com/2019/09/27/episode-201-emily-toia/ Fri, 27 Sep 2019 12:19:21 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=11478 more »]]>

You may know Emily as the woman who runs a ton of miles on the treadmill. She runs 95% of her 80ish mile weeks from her Woodway treadmill. She is so much more than those treadmill runs. Man, I am thankful for this job because it provides me with the opportunity to get to know people like Emily.

At 42, just last year, Emily ran her marathon PR of 3:10 after years of no PR! How exciting is that? She has done six 100 milers and eight 50 milers. She can be found running 20-22 miles from her treadmill multiple times a week. I had so many treadmill questions.

Emily is the mother of two- her kids are 14 years apart and she gets vulnerable with us talking about her struggles with infertility an miscarriage. It was so refreshing to hear from her about these seasons of life and what it’s like to parent kids at two totally different stages in life.

I really loved my conversation with Emily and I hope you will too.

Episode 185: Katie Arnold https://lindseyhein.com/2019/06/07/episode-185-katie-arnold/ Fri, 07 Jun 2019 11:45:27 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=10610 more »]]>

Katie Arnold is the 2018 Leadville Trail 100 Champion and the Author of the new book “Running Home”. She is the mother of two and is a contributing editor and former managing editor at Outside Magazine. She is the creator of an amazing column for Outside called “Raising Rippers” which talks about raising adventurous kids.

Katie, who is an elite ultra runner talks about becoming a runner by accident – she never competed as a kid or a young adult- aside from the 10K she ran once a year as a kid (which also happened by accident). Once she started running trail races and winning she realized she had a real gift for running fast- she ran her first Ultra at the age of 40.

Some of Kate’s most notable accomplishments include winning the 2018 Leadville Trail 100 Run, where she finished 11th overall in field of more than 700 runners. She won the 2018 Jemez Mountains 50 Mile, 2014 TransRockies 3-Day Trail Run, Jemez Mountains 50K, the Mount Taylor 50K. She is two-time overall champion and course record holder at the Angel Fire 100K.

Katie lives in Sante Fe, New Mexico and loves to be outdoors – she loves biking, skiing, going on river trips, hiking and of course writing. Though her first book is a memoir, she hopes to write a fiction novel one day. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Men’s JournalESPN the MagazineMarie ClaireRunner’s WorldElle, and Sunset, among others.

I felt a really strong connection with Katie in this episode and felt like we could have talked for hours. In Katie’s book, she writes about losing her Father and how she dealt with extrememly intense anxiety for an 18-month period after losing him and how running ultimately became a really great coping mechanism for that. Running didn’t cure it but it helped. Being someone who has dealt with anxiety quite a bit, I had a lot of questions. We also talk a lot about what it’s like to be a top ultra runner while also living moment to moment and not overthinking things. It’s a lot of good stuff. I can’t wait to hear what you all think.

Enjoy!

Scott Jurek is a Husband, Father, Author and one of the names we will never forget in the world of Ultra running. Most known for his 7- consecutive straight victories at The Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run, he has also taken victories in the 153-mile Spartathlon, the Hardrock 100 and the Badwater 135-Mile Ultramarathon.

In their newest venture – in 2015, Scott and his wife Jenny recount their adventure on the Appalachian Trail in their new book “North” – Scott put in the miles and Jenny put her heart into crewing him and supporting him on this big adventure. He took the Appalachian Trail speed record that year, averaging nearly 50 miles a day over 46 days. He also once held the United States all-surface record in the 24-Hour Run with 165.7 miles: 6.5 marathons in one day – which in this episode he mentions he might have interest in chasing that down again.

Scott is well known for his vegan diet and is an encourager to runners of all abilities to live a healthy lifestyle. He is also a New York Times-bestselling author for his memoir, Eat & Run, and his journey running the the Tarahumar in the Copper Caynon is recounted in the popular book, Born To Run.

In this conversation, you’ll get to hear about Scott’s career and passion for the sport, his back story, which victories meant most to him and how he remained mentally tough during dark times in races and events like the Appalachian Trial. You’ll also get to hear from his wife, Jenny about their time on the Appalachian Trail and what’s next for them. No fear friends- Jenny will be back on for a solo episode where we’ll get to hear all about her story as well.

2018 Western States winner Courtney Dauwalter joins me today! Courtney has made a big name for herself in the ultra running world over these last few years. She recently became the second fastest woman of all time to finish the prestigious Western States 100 miler in a time of 17 hours, 27 minutes and 2 seconds. She has won a ton of big ultra distances races but one of her other biggest moments was when last year she won the Moab 240 outright by over 10 hours.

Courtney was a teacher for several years before going full time into the running scene and now she’s all in. Though she wins big races and does things most of us can’t even imagine doing with our bodies, she is somehow extremely relatable. In this episode we get to talk about the mental side of the sport and the things Courtney does to stay positive and in the right mindset during big races. I loved this conversation so much and truly didn’t want it to end. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Photo: Myke Hermsmeyer, Outside Magazine

Jim Walmsley is one of the most competitive and fastest ultra runners in the World. Relatively “new” to the scene, he started ultra running to get through some hard times in his life and got serious into training in 2015. He trains in Flagstaff, AZ with the Coconino Cowboys and is sponsored by Hoka One One, Cliff bar and Nathan Hydration. He holds 16 course records on ultra courses- including Lake Sonoma 50, the Speedgoat 50K, JFK 50 Miler and Gorge Waterfalls 100K. Not to mention some crazy fastest known times on trails like Rim to Rim to Rim.

In just one week he is racing the prestigious Western States 100 mile endurance race for the third time- he was a heavy favorite in both 2016 and 2017 when both times the race didn’t go as planned. In 2016, he got lost on the trail 93 miles into the race when he had had a lead of over an hour and was on track to crush the course record of 14:46:44. He finished the race that day in 20th place in a time of 18:45:36 with an attitude we can all learn something from. In 2017 – again a favorite to win the race, he had to drop around mile 73 due to fueling and stomach issues.

He’s been training hard in 2018 to give it another go on June 23rd. He just crushed his own Lake Sonoma 50 record a couple of months ago. Jim has a confidence and drive that will inspire you and hopefully make you think on the fact that it’s good and healthy to have big goals and big dreams and even when those don’t work out the first or the second time; that getting back at it and going for it again is admirable. I can’t wait to see what Jim does this year and how he races the course.

Enjoy my conversation with Jim Walmsley!

Jenna Powers is an ultra runner. She ran her first 5K at the age of 29 fresh off a failed marriage and that’s where it all began. At the age of 37 she ran her first marathon and since than has ran several, along with several ultra marathons as well, including a 100 miler!

Jenna is a proud mid-packer. And she says “This is important because that means I am in the majority. A weekend warrior juggling a high-stress corporate job, and building a house, and tending to my marriage and other relationships, and running upwards of 50 miles on most weeks.” And she says “While it takes a special kind of person to qualify for Boston, or run a sub-3 hour marathon, anyone — absolutely anyone — can cross a finish line of any distance. And it’s the finish lines, not the clock, that will change your life for the better.”

Jenna, works for Amazon, where in 2016, in the middle of training for her first 100 miler, she took on a new role and went from managing a team of 12 people in the US, to managing a team of 130 people around the globe. She believes there is a reason her progression at work and running have coincided. Jenna was recently recognized by Women’s Running as one of 21 Women who are Changing the World through Running, committed to running 40 races in her 40th year, as well as provide 40 race entries to others. She is finishing off her last 15 entries by partnering with the amazing group over at Run the Edge. (More info in the episode on that!)

In this episode, I know Jenna will inspire you to most importantly GET TO THE START LINE. After all, that’s the first big step right?

In this episode of I’ll Have Another, we are talking Ultra Running and adventure. I have a group of friends taking on Rim to Rim to Rim this week and they posted a TedX Talk of my guest for today’s show Krissy Moehl. Krissy has completed R2R2R really fast, so we were intrigued to her her talk. I rarely sit down and watch any sort of on-line video, but I watched this video completely intrigued and immediately emailed her to see if she’d chat with me for the show!

Krissy is an Ultra Trail Running, a coach, an author and a race director. In seventeen years of Ultrarunning Krissy has toed the line to over 100 races, including 55 female wins, 2 outright wins and just 2 DNFs. In the hour we had, we didn’t get into even a baby chunk of her accomplishments- so I wanted to list them here:

In this episode, Krissy talks about the important factors that make up a successful race for her- outside of just being physically prepared. She talks about a few of her many adventures in depth- like having the fastest known time around the Lake Tahoe Trail. We talk about how being competitive is great, but working with others is a big part of that. Krissy is humble and kind and the perfect example of what the sport of Ultra Running is all about.

I’ll Have Another Podcast Episode 44: Glenn Hein

This is a unique episode. Since it’s Christmas time and my husband Glenn has a good amount of time off work these two weeks, we decided it would be a great time to record an episode with him!

Glenn works in finance at Covance Central Labs during the week and shuts that off the second he gets home and is an amazing Dad to our three boys. He is an athlete, he loves to cook (which we fail to talk about in this episode), one of my favorite things about him is his positive and easy going personality.

In this episode we talk about how we met, which takes up a good part of the first half of the episode. I talk a lot ok? We also talk about how he went from non-runner to marathon runner to taking an hour off his marathon time to completing four Ultras, including a 100K.

We had fun recording, though there were many kid distractions- which I hope didn’t effect the episode too much. Though he’s had the week off, it was kind of a hectic week around here with kids getting sick and running the show. I hope to record more with him in the future- please enjoy and let me know what you think on social media!

You can find me on instagram at LindseyHein626, on twitter @LindseyHein and on Facebook! You can also find Glenn on twitter @ghein83.
