His story to where he is today is a story of faith, hope, courage and tenacity.

He is from South Sudan and at the age of 6 was taken by soldiers from his family at a church service where he was held captive until he escaped with three older boys. He then went to live in a refugee camp for 10 years before coming to the United States. There is so much to unpack with his story and he shares about it in this podcast episode but in much more detail in his book “Running for My Life” which you should all go pick up today!

Lopez has been a dream guest for the show for a long time. He has such an amazing life story and I can’t wait to share it with you all here today!

I have been wanting to talk with Jordan since the fall and am excited to have finally had the opportunity to talk with her. Many would have said she was a favorite going into the Olympic Trials Marathon if she was healthy and ready to race but she walked away finishing 26th. You’ll hear about what happened during the trails, how she felt and how she’s feeling post race. We also talk a little bit about how she’s been feeling since the separation from her long term coach Alberto Salalzar and how it’s been working with her new coach, Paula Radcliffe.

Make sure you listen to the first two times she was on the show- episode 128 and episode 179.

She just broke the American Record in the 3K at the BU Last Chance Invitational. She ran a time of 8:25.70 – followed by her teammates Shelby Houlihan and Colleen Quigley who also broke there record Karissa got there first though and now she is an American Record Holder!

Karissa runs for Nike with the Bowerman Track Club under Coach Jerrry Schumacher. This is her second year with the team and 2020 is off to a great start, along with grabbing that 3K American Record, she has also run a mile PR (4:24). Was 2nd in the 3k and 3rd in the 1500 at USA indoors.

Before joining the Bowerman team, she ran for The University of Missouri where she was a 6- Time NCAA Champion – walking away from the school as the most decorated female athlete of all time.

Karissa brings a lot of positive energy to this conversation and you’l hear that when you listen! My biggest takeaway- Anything can happen!!

Episode 228: Sally Kipyego https://lindseyhein.com/2020/02/24/episode-228-sally-kipyego/ https://lindseyhein.com/2020/02/24/episode-228-sally-kipyego/#comments Mon, 24 Feb 2020 20:38:55 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=11742 more »]]> Sally Kipyego is one to be watching in Atlanta this weekend for the Olympic Marathon Trials! She is fit and ready to compete. Coming off a stellar fall marathon in Berlin where she ran a 2:25, which was a three minute PR. It is exciting to think about what she can do coming off that cycle into this one coming off a trying couple of years post partum and battling some sickness. It feels even more exciting thinking about how fresh her legs may be and how determined her spirit is after the long road back.

Sally is originally from Kenya and came to the US for college where she competed for Texas Tech where she won 9 NCAA titles (3 consecutive in cross country, outdoor 10k + 5k, and indoor 3k and 5k (3 consecutive titles). She then went on to run professionally for Nike with the Oregon Track Club. She holds a silver medal in the World championships in the 10k to Kenyan and went on to win an Olympic silver medal for Kenya the following year in the 10,000m.

Sally debuted the marathon in NYC in 2016, finishing second to Mary Keitany, ahead of third place Molly Huddle. She ran a time of 2:28 and later found out she was 8 weeks pregnant during that marathon. In 2017 she gave birth to her daughter Emma and battled with some major post partum struggles coming back, as well as a bout with Malaria and Pnemonia.

She finally has found her strength back and raced super well this past fall and I can’t wait to see what she can accomplish at the trials this weekend. So much on the horizon for Sally and if you aren’t already following her career- get on it!!

Colleen Quigley just won her first National Title in the Mile and I could be happier for her! She is a returning on the show for a third time and we get to talk about what she’s been up to in the last year and what her plans for the future are as well! Colleen is coming of a year of on an off injuries and talks openly about those experiences. Make sure you go back and listen to the first two times she’s been on the show- episode 50 with teammates Shelby Houlihan and Courtney Frerichs and episode 103 for a solo episode where we really learn about her back story!

Colleen runs for Nike with the Bowerman Track Club and made her first Olympic team in 2016 in the Steeplechase and placed 8th in Rio. Her running career started in high school when she realized she had real potential and ended up winning state in the 1600 and the 3200 her senior year. She went on to run for Florida state where she won an NCAA title her senior year, heading straight into competing at Worlds in Beijing where she placed 12th.

Enjoy my conversation with Colleen!

Katie Nageotte is a Pole Vaulter for Nike- she’s a 2-Time NCAA Champion and a US National Champion. In 2016, she placed 5th at the Olympic Trials and has since moved out to the state of Washington to be coached under Brad Walker. She has been setting PRs and had a great season this past spring and Katie has big dreams of not only making an Olympic Team but also snagging a Gold Medal. She has committed to dedicating her life to the sport and you’ll hear that in our conversation.

In this episode we get to learn about the sport of Pole Vault and what it looks like to gain a sponsorship as a field athlete rather than someone running laps on the track. Katie also passionately shares about pursuing a healthy body image and we get to hear about her special relationship with her Dad, who was her biggest cheerleader and passed away suddenly when she was just sixteen. We end our chat with all the fun stuff on Katie’s bucket list and of course what are the best most recent books she’s read. You guys are going to love this conversation with Katie!

Episode 133: Shelby Houlihan Bonus https://lindseyhein.com/2018/07/28/episode-133-shelby-houlihan-bonus/ Sat, 28 Jul 2018 11:17:08 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=9207 more »]]>

Shelby Houlihan just broke the American Record by four seconds in the 5K in a time of 14:34 in Heudsen; which gave her a personal record by 26 seconds. In this episode she tells us the progression of how the goal to break the American Record went down. Her coach, Jerry Schumacher has known her potential and the process has been nothing short of a well thought out methodical progression. She was paced by teammate Shalane Flanagan and 1500 Meter competitor for New Balance, Corey Mcgee. She’s been running so fast this year and has shownthat she’s the real deal with her competitive nature and insane kick.

Shelby runs for Nike with the Bowerman Track Club and I love interviewing the crew over there; Shelby is no stranger to this podcast- check out her other episodes (Episode 50 and 108). Shelby is just as fierce and excited about her dreams as she was in the first two episodes we recorded. She’s a 2016 Olympian and has dreams of making the American 5K scene more competitive on a World Level.

And guys- no she’s not changing her IG or twitter handles and spills that she even plans to possibly race an 800 this fall! Look out for her to put down some more fast times in the coming months when she’ll compete in the Diamond League final in Brussels and the Continental Cup in the Czech Republic. My bet is she grabs herself another American Record; in the 1500 this time.

Shelby Houlihan is a 2016 Olympian in the 5,000 meters and runs for Nike with the Bowerman Track Club. Shelby was on the podcast back in episode 50 with her teammates Courtney Frerichs and Colleen Quigley where we learned just how fierce and determined she is. In this episode, Shelby shares with us her dreams of winning an Olympic Gold Medal and her passion of living in the moment and seeking adventure. She recently competed in the USA and World indoor championships where she walked away with a win at USAs in both the 1,500 and the 3,000, placing 4th and 5th and Worlds.

She was a successful high school and collegiate runner; she as a 12 time Division 1 All American and was the 2014 NCAA Champion in the 1500. Shelby is confident and comes off as fearless, thoroughly enjoying the pain that a tough workout brings; embracing the life she gets to live doing what she loves so much as her professional career; running. I just love talking to all the girls on the Bowerman team and it’s so exciting to see them chase after their big goals.

Enjoy!

I’m so excited to have returning guest Allie Kieffer on the show today! Allie was on the show right after her 5th place finish at the New York City Marathon this past fall and so much has happened since then. Like most of you, I’ve been wondering what she’s up to and what’s next for her. Allie recently signed with Oiselle and is currently training in Kenya and plans to run the London Marathon this spring. She”ll be back in the United States in a few weeks to race a half marathon as well!

Allie is so kind and sweet and in this episode we talk about everything from what life and training in Kenya is like, compared to the United States, how hard running at altitude is to body image and time goals for spring races. She’s the real deal ya’ll.

I’ll Have Another Podcast Episode 50: Colleen Quigley, Shelby Hoolihan & Courtney Frerichs

What an exciting episode! I got to chat with three Olympians to celebrate episode 50 of the podcast. Colleen and Courtney both competed in the Steeplechase in Rio this year in the 2016 Olympics and Shelby competed in the 5K. All three girls run for the Bowerman Track Club under coach Jerry Schumacher and are sponsored by Nike.

In this episode the ladies talk about their journey to becoming professional athletes – they all had very different paths which made for interesting conversation and lot’s of inspiration for a young runner to hear. We also talk about making the Olympic team and goals for the future. They give some great advice to young ladies who might be inspiring to be in their shoes one day.

If you know of any high school track or cross country coaches- this would be a great episode to share with them for their teams!
