His previous running experience includes, placing in the top 10 at the 2015 NCAA D1 Cross Country Championship being a key player in his team winning the National Title that year.  Marty also competed in the 2016 Olympic Trials in the 10K finishing 7th.

Episode 228: Sally Kipyego https://lindseyhein.com/2020/02/24/episode-228-sally-kipyego/ https://lindseyhein.com/2020/02/24/episode-228-sally-kipyego/#comments Mon, 24 Feb 2020 20:38:55 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=11742 more »]]> Sally Kipyego is one to be watching in Atlanta this weekend for the Olympic Marathon Trials! She is fit and ready to compete. Coming off a stellar fall marathon in Berlin where she ran a 2:25, which was a three minute PR. It is exciting to think about what she can do coming off that cycle into this one coming off a trying couple of years post partum and battling some sickness. It feels even more exciting thinking about how fresh her legs may be and how determined her spirit is after the long road back.

Sally is originally from Kenya and came to the US for college where she competed for Texas Tech where she won 9 NCAA titles (3 consecutive in cross country, outdoor 10k + 5k, and indoor 3k and 5k (3 consecutive titles). She then went on to run professionally for Nike with the Oregon Track Club. She holds a silver medal in the World championships in the 10k to Kenyan and went on to win an Olympic silver medal for Kenya the following year in the 10,000m.

Sally debuted the marathon in NYC in 2016, finishing second to Mary Keitany, ahead of third place Molly Huddle. She ran a time of 2:28 and later found out she was 8 weeks pregnant during that marathon. In 2017 she gave birth to her daughter Emma and battled with some major post partum struggles coming back, as well as a bout with Malaria and Pnemonia.

She finally has found her strength back and raced super well this past fall and I can’t wait to see what she can accomplish at the trials this weekend. So much on the horizon for Sally and if you aren’t already following her career- get on it!!

Matt Chittam, Host of the Rambling Runner Podcast joins me today on the podcast! Matt has become a great friend over the past couple years and I’m super inspired by what he’s created in the running/podcast scene.

Matt works full time in Fundraising and has a deep passion for podcasting. He works so hard to bring the stories of amateur runners from all over to his listeners and does a fabulous job exploring their lives. Matt is the father of two and has been married to his wife Hollie for 10 years- I loved hearing him talk about how Hollie is so supportive of his work and he gets personal sharing about his decision to start going to therapy ad how his wife played a really integral part in making that happen.

Matt is launching an exciting new series called “Road to the Olympic Trials” where he follows seven athletes competing in the Olympic Trials this coming February and one athlete is going for a shot to qualify this fall. The athletes range from full time pros, to working professionals who still run 90 mile weeks and compete at World Class speeds and those who qualified by just a small margin and will be toeing the line with the best distance runners in our country in February. All who have inspiring stories! Make sure you go subscribe and check it out because it’s launching next week!

Scott Fauble joins me on the show today! Scott runs for HOKA NAZ Elite and is currently training for the TCS New York City Marathon. This will be his second marathon- he debuted last fall with the 12th fastest American Debut ever in 2:12:35 at the Frankfurt Marathon.

Scott is a Colorado native and had a standout career at Wheat Ridge High School. He was the State Cross Country Champion in 2009 and went on to finish 17th at the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships later that season. He then chose to run collegiately at the University of Portland before going Pro.

In this episode of the podcast we get to talk about Scott’s career and NYC training, but we also get to talk about anxiety and overcoming hard things. Scott has a really great perspective and outlook on the sport and life. I really enjoyed getting to know him and I think you will too!

Mario is a runner, coach, writer and podcaster. Over the years, he’s coached athletes from across the spectrum of first time runners, Boston Qualifiers and people competing on World Championship Teams.

He shares his thoughts on running in his popular weekly newsletter the morning shakeout, and has somewhat recently ventured into the world of podcasting. From 2010-2016, Mario was the senior editor at Competitor magazine and has worked on numerous other projects in both the running and media spaces. He currently lives in California in the Bay Area with his wife Christine, four bikes and dozens of pairs of running shoes.

In this episode, we talk about how his love for running began, his career, The Morning Shakeout and we also get into some  behind the scenes podcasting talk as well as his coaching strategies. I have him give me his thoughts on what kind of training might be good for me to do post partum this time around to shoot for another marathon PR.  Mario runs competitively and crossed the finish line in 2:37 in the crazy conditions of Boston this year. He is a sub 2:30 marathoner and hopes to break that time once again. Enjoy my conversation with Mario!

Episode 99: Kathrine Switzer https://lindseyhein.com/2018/01/12/episode-99-kathrine-switzer/ https://lindseyhein.com/2018/01/12/episode-99-kathrine-switzer/#comments Fri, 12 Jan 2018 11:07:43 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=7004 more »]]>

Today I am honored to have the one and only Kathrine Switzer on I’ll Have Another. Kathrine was the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as an official participant in 1967. (You’ve all seen the iconic picture of one of the race officials trying to take her bib from her while she’s running the race) She’s had a huge part in radically changing women’s running to move toward in an amazing and positive direction over the last 50 years. She is one of the most influential runners of all time. She’s worked tirelessly for years to give women the opportunity they deserve in the sport and she continues to do that through her non-profit 261 fearless.  Kathrine ran both the Boston Marathon and the NYC Marathon in 2017- 50 years since that first Boston she ran, raising awareness and funds for her incredible organization.

What you don’t hear talked about much as that first Boston she ran though is Kathrine’s athletic achievement in the sport. I had no clue until reading her book that she holds a marathon PR of 2:51, that she worked her tail off to earn, which landed her in second place at the 1975 Boston Marathon. She wasn’t training just to earn the time for herself though, she was training to run fast to prove that women could run fast too and that they were worthy to be out on the start and finish line with the men. The sport of running was a much different world 50 years ago. We all know now that ANYONE running ANY TIME is worthy of being on the start and finish line. At least I hope we all feel that way.

I highly recommend you all go out and pick up Kathrine’s book “Marathon Woman” to learn more about her journey to the 1967 Boston Marathon and beyond. I guarantee you will learn something you didn’t know about her and how the sport of running has become what it is today. It is truly remarkable all that she has done for the sport- many things I knew nothing about until I read the book. Kathrine had a huge hand in the Marathon becoming an Olympic event for women (which didn’t happen until 1984!) Can you imagine there being a men’s marathon in the Olympics but not a women’s now in 2018? That was reality. Blows my mind.

I know you are going to be inspired by this interview with Kathrine and I’m so happy you are hear tuning in.

Episode 97: Des Linden https://lindseyhein.com/2017/12/29/episode-97-des-linden/ https://lindseyhein.com/2017/12/29/episode-97-des-linden/#comments Fri, 29 Dec 2017 11:24:03 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=6807 more »]]>

Des Linden is one of the most consistent American Marathoners of all time. She is fast, she is fiesty and she’s chasing down her big W. Des is a two-time Olympian in the marathon and has placed second at Boston, Chicago and the US Olympic Trials. She holds a marathon PR of 2:22:38. Des is toeing the line in Boston this year along with several other notable American Women and after this conversation, I’m sure you’ll be even more excited to cheer for her than you were before!

In this episode we talk about Boston 2018, her marathon progression, some fun stories about training with her husband and not balancing her training and his ironman endeavors. We talk about her breakthrough race in 2011 when she ran a 2:22, placing second in the Boston Marathon by only 2 seconds.

Des is so humble, she is a fierce, hard worker and let me just tell you she is so freaking nice. We had some audio issues (like 45 minutes worth) before the conversation actually got going and she was so chill and nice to figure things out with me. I asked for 45-60 minutes and she gave me two full hours of her time. She says patience is her sweet spot (which we see in her racing) but I also saw that in her willingness to spend time figuring out the issues in this recording as well. THANK YOU DES.

Enjoy this episode with friends!

Episode 95 will round out the last of three interviews from ladies who ran CIM and rocked it. Lauren lives in Southern California (jealous!), is married to Henri and is the mom to Lavinia. Lauren ran in college and came back to running fast just a few years ago. She just ran a 2:44 marathon at CIM, qualifying herself for the Olympic Marathon Trials and taking 22 minutes off of her PR, which was 3:06. She talks about her training in this episode and what race weekend looked like and how even if things don’t go exactly as planned on race morning/weekend, you can still have a kick ass day.

Lauren is a cross country and track coach and also coaches runners on-line with her own coaching business. In this episode we also talk about the fact that she had a natural childbirth at a Birthing Center – as the mom of three, I just can’t even image. (Give me all the epidurals!) I’m always in awe of women you go natural and love hearing about the mental side of that – which Lauren credits to helping her become a tougher runner as well. Lauren is a listener of the show and those episodes are always super fun because listeners seem to be some of the best guests as they know the flow!

Enjoy this episode with Lauren!
