She runs for Nike Trail, she’s a running coach, a mental performance consultant and the co-founder of OUTrun. The inspiration behind OUTrun is to empower and connect LGBTQ+ individuals within the running community and to create an environment that is encouraging, supportive, and inclusive to all.

Addie has a wide range in her athletic accomplishments having qualified for both the 10K and the marathon in the Olympic trials in previous years and is now a staple in the Ultra running community having placed 2nd at the Leadville 100 in 2018 and 9th at Western States in 2019.

She got her Masters in Sport and Performance Psychology at the University of Denver and is currently writing a book that she shares about in this episode. It sounds so good and I had lot’s of questions about it.

In this episode Addie shares with us a little bit about her own running career, we talk about running for Nike Trail, her heart behind OUTrun and what she’s most passionate about in this community.

Enjoy my conversation with Addie Bracy!

Episode 246: Jenny and Scott Jurek https://lindseyhein.com/2020/05/01/episode-246-jenny-and-scott-jurek/ Fri, 01 May 2020 16:55:26 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=11906 more »]]> I catch up with returning guests Jenny and Scott Jurek on today’s episode! I am absolutely loving having returning guests on for these fun catch ups. I was excited to talk about one of their most recent big adventures in this episode – they bike packed around Japan WITH their 1 and 3 year old kids! I love that they don’t let having small kids get in the way of seeking adventure and walked away feeling encouraged to do the same.

Scott and Jenny are author’s of the book “North” – a book that documents their journey on the Appalachian Trail. Scott put in the miles and Jenny put her heart into crewing him and supporting him on this big adventure.

Scott is perhaps most known for his book Eat and Run and for his 7- consecutive straight victories at The Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run, he has also taken victories in the 153-mile Spartathlon, the Hardrock 100 and the Badwater 135-Mile Ultramarathon.

Jenny is an outdoor apparel/activewear designer, badass ultra runner (she has 2 100 milers under her belt!) and advocate for safe maternal health for women all over the World.

Episode 202: Courtney Dauwalter, 2019 UTMB Champion https://lindseyhein.com/2019/10/04/episode-202-courtney-dauwalter-2019-utmb-champion/ https://lindseyhein.com/2019/10/04/episode-202-courtney-dauwalter-2019-utmb-champion/#comments Fri, 04 Oct 2019 11:08:15 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=11487 more »]]>

2019 Ultra Trail Du Mount Blanc winner Courtney Dauwalter joins me today! Courtney raced UTMB coming off an injury that pulled her out of Western States 100 at mile 80 back in June. I would say she took everyone by surprise but in what I will call Courtney fashion, showed up, did the work, gutted it out when she felt really low and came out on top. One thing I love about Courtney is she talks about how she went into this race like she could compete at her highest level even coming off the injury.

This is Courtney’s second round on the podcast- so make sure you go back and listen to her on episode 137 as well – that was right after her 2018 Western States 100 win when Courtney became the second fastest woman of all time to finish the prestigious race in a time of 17 hours, 27 minutes and 2 seconds. She has won a ton of big ultra distances races but one of her other biggest moments was in 2017 she won the Moab 240 outright by over 10 hours.

Courtney was a teacher for several years before going full time into the running scene and now she’s all in. Though she wins big races and does things most of us can’t even imagine doing with our bodies, she is extremely relatable.

In this episode we get to talk about her most recent accomplishments as well as what’s on the horizon… coming up the 24 hour World Championships where she will represent Team USA.

Episode 197: Brittany Peterson https://lindseyhein.com/2019/08/30/episode-197-brittany-peterson/ Fri, 30 Aug 2019 11:38:51 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=11449 more »]]>

Brittany Peterson placed 2nd place at the Western States Endurance run this year and hasn’t sat down since. Some may have called her a dark horse to podium at Western States but she knew what she was capable of all along. Brittany has a background in Skyrunning and shares all about exactly what that is in this episode.

We get a Western States play by play which was really fun to hear as she had a super strong race and took the lead for a hot second around mile 94 of the race. Just four weeks after Western, Brittany was out skyrunning competing in the Tromso 100K, a race with 15K feet of vertical climbing, held a training camp with her boyfriend Cody Lind and is competing in CCC 100K, an event that is part of the UTMB weekend TODAY!

Brittany’s heart is in the mountains and she truly loves the adventure of being out on the trails exploring what she is capable of. She is a dog lover and though she is racing professionally for Nike Trail these days, she is also an Occupational Therapist working in education as well. In fact while overseas in France, she was hoping on calls to check in with her students.

I really enjoyed getting to know Brittany and I hope you will to!

Scott Jurek is a Husband, Father, Author and one of the names we will never forget in the world of Ultra running. Most known for his 7- consecutive straight victories at The Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run, he has also taken victories in the 153-mile Spartathlon, the Hardrock 100 and the Badwater 135-Mile Ultramarathon.

In their newest venture – in 2015, Scott and his wife Jenny recount their adventure on the Appalachian Trail in their new book “North” – Scott put in the miles and Jenny put her heart into crewing him and supporting him on this big adventure. He took the Appalachian Trail speed record that year, averaging nearly 50 miles a day over 46 days. He also once held the United States all-surface record in the 24-Hour Run with 165.7 miles: 6.5 marathons in one day – which in this episode he mentions he might have interest in chasing that down again.

Scott is well known for his vegan diet and is an encourager to runners of all abilities to live a healthy lifestyle. He is also a New York Times-bestselling author for his memoir, Eat & Run, and his journey running the the Tarahumar in the Copper Caynon is recounted in the popular book, Born To Run.

In this conversation, you’ll get to hear about Scott’s career and passion for the sport, his back story, which victories meant most to him and how he remained mentally tough during dark times in races and events like the Appalachian Trial. You’ll also get to hear from his wife, Jenny about their time on the Appalachian Trail and what’s next for them. No fear friends- Jenny will be back on for a solo episode where we’ll get to hear all about her story as well.

Jim Walmsley is one of the most competitive and fastest ultra runners in the World. Relatively “new” to the scene, he started ultra running to get through some hard times in his life and got serious into training in 2015. He trains in Flagstaff, AZ with the Coconino Cowboys and is sponsored by Hoka One One, Cliff bar and Nathan Hydration. He holds 16 course records on ultra courses- including Lake Sonoma 50, the Speedgoat 50K, JFK 50 Miler and Gorge Waterfalls 100K. Not to mention some crazy fastest known times on trails like Rim to Rim to Rim.

In just one week he is racing the prestigious Western States 100 mile endurance race for the third time- he was a heavy favorite in both 2016 and 2017 when both times the race didn’t go as planned. In 2016, he got lost on the trail 93 miles into the race when he had had a lead of over an hour and was on track to crush the course record of 14:46:44. He finished the race that day in 20th place in a time of 18:45:36 with an attitude we can all learn something from. In 2017 – again a favorite to win the race, he had to drop around mile 73 due to fueling and stomach issues.

He’s been training hard in 2018 to give it another go on June 23rd. He just crushed his own Lake Sonoma 50 record a couple of months ago. Jim has a confidence and drive that will inspire you and hopefully make you think on the fact that it’s good and healthy to have big goals and big dreams and even when those don’t work out the first or the second time; that getting back at it and going for it again is admirable. I can’t wait to see what Jim does this year and how he races the course.

Enjoy my conversation with Jim Walmsley!

Jackie Merritt is a badass ultra runner who placed 7th at Western States 100 mile race last year after earning a Golden Ticket with a second place finish at the Georgia Death race. She grew up playing basketball and found her love for long distance running during college. She is currently training for Western States 100 again that will take place in June.

While Jackie runs for Hoka One One and Lily Trotters and is one of the most competitive ultra runners in our country- she is also extremely dedicated to her career as a Physical Therapist. She holds a Doctoral Degree in Biomechanics and currently studies Neuroscience at Emory University.

Jackie is smart and has a really good mindset on how to approach training hard in a healthy way while still prioritizing other important things in her life. You might learn a little about running form and leg swing in this episode as well. She’s knows a thing or two about it.

Enjoy!

In this episode of I’ll Have Another, we are talking Ultra Running and adventure. I have a group of friends taking on Rim to Rim to Rim this week and they posted a TedX Talk of my guest for today’s show Krissy Moehl. Krissy has completed R2R2R really fast, so we were intrigued to her her talk. I rarely sit down and watch any sort of on-line video, but I watched this video completely intrigued and immediately emailed her to see if she’d chat with me for the show!

She talks about a few of her many adventures in depth- like having the fastest known time around the Lake Tahoe Trail. We talk about how being competitive is great, but working with others is a big part of that. Krissy is humble and kind and the perfect example of what the sport of Ultra Running is all about.
