Neely is an American Distance Runner, running Professionally for Adidas. She’s had a thing for the 5K most of her running career, but in the past few years has taken up the marathon!  She’s competed two times in at the IAAF World Championships in the 5K for team USA, placing 13th in 2013. In 2016 she debuted her first marathon coming off an injury that cost her running in the Olympic Marathon Trials. (which she also missed in 2012 due to injury/illness)  So with a short training cycle, she completed the race as the top American in Boston with a time of 2:35. Just 7 months later she shaved 5 seconds off that time with a time of 2:34:55 at the NYC Marathon. She has had plenty of hiccups on the road injury wise and also has has battled Lyme Disease. Her resilience is contagious. And brief side note here – the girl was born to run, she was actually born while her Dad (an accomplished runner himself) was running the Boston Marathon.

Neely is expecting her first child (a boy!) and we had a lot of fun talking about that experience and the decision she made to start a family smack dab in the middle of her marathoning career. She’s got big dreams for post pregnancy racing. She is only 27, so has a lot of years of marathoning ahead of her! She is also a running coach (Get Running) and lives in Boulder, CO with her husband and their dog – patiently awaiting baby boy in August!

What? you thought I’d quit already? NAAAA. I don’t quit that easy.

We had our BEST stroller group at Annex yet today. 15 momma’s and a ton of kids. Look at that fierce group.

SEA OF MOMS

Marshall couldn’t handle the walk, I guess he’s used to the person behind the stroller running. So he got out, promptly face planted, held up the line of strollers and then was back at it.

MARShRUN

This group is really awesome. I sincerely hope that everyone who walks up feels welcomed and comfortable even if they’ve never met anyone there before. One of the gals who showed up today just saw us out on the monon a couple weeks back and that’s how she heard about it and decided to join! Good stuff. I want it to be a place to connect, encourage and relax (as much as you can when you have your kids in tow)

GROUP

Big Lou, doing Big Lou things. Usually at these meet ups I forget about Big Lou, because he’s just in the middle of a sea of babies playing. (And I’m usually on Marshall damage control) Today I forgot to check on him for like 20 minutes and didn’t see him. Panicked or 5 seconds and realized Kelly was playing with him. Good thing these other moms are watching out for my kid.

BIGLOUSBGUONOWJI

And we are super fortunate that Annex is right next door to Rene’s Bakery. They bring us goodies every week and today it was this amazingly delicious tart cherry pie thing. Yeah. That’s healthy brunch food after a leisurely 30 minute walk right?

Oh and see that awesome gear in the pictures below? We (Athletic Annex) are soooo excited to be offering an exclusive line from Saucony for a few weeks starting the end of October through mid November. Seriously this gear is legit- casual comfort. We are only one of two stores in Indiana (the other store is in schererville, IN) who will have the items for this limited time. I’ll let you know as soon as it’s in. It will be scooped up fast so you don’t want to miss out. I’m pretty excited to see it in person. Oh an of course we have the Tales from Another Mother Runner book out. Love that Sarah and Dimity.

SAUCONY

That’s it for now. Day three. What could I possibly have to say tomorrow? I’m sure there will be something.

Oh today’s workout was short, but right now, I’m just trying to get myself in the pool at least 3 times a week:

1,000 Yards: Freestyle – 250 warm up, 2 X 250 hard (with 50 breast stroke between sets) 250 cool down.

I was happy to just to get a swim in because it seems like have the time a kid has had an accident in the pool at the Y so it’s closed for cleaning during my open window of time I’m there to workout. Next time it happens, I’m hunting the kid down myself and setting them straight. That’s mean, huh?

I never really do swim “workouts”, I usually just swim to get to my “goal” distance of the day. Today I just did the 2 X 250 “hard” because I was bored swimming and wanted to make it go faster. In all reality, since my form is so lousy, my “hard” probably isn’t much faster than my “easy” because I’m not very efficient, but man my heart rate was up which made me happy.

Right now I’m good with keeping my swims between 1,000-1,500 yards or meters. I’m sitting thinking back to when I trained for Muncie 70.3 and I was pretty much doing 2,000 three days a week or more. WOOF.

Who’s got a good swim workout for me?

Plantar fasciitis is out to get me. Always on my right foot. I had it last in the spring of 2014. After finishing Boston, I knew I needed to take time off because it had gotten really bad. It ended up being a good time to take off because I found out I was pregnant a few weeks later. I went to Dr. Charbel and had work done and took 4-6 weeks off the foot. Since I was pregnant though, I never really ramped my miles up to more than 25-30 a week, so it stayed away.

This started flaring up about 6 weeks ago, after a longer trail run that seemed to tear up my achilles. It seemed to hit me when I hit over 50 miles a week as well. I did run 63 miles last week taking one day off. It seems to feel a little better after taking a day off. I took Monday off this week as well. I am icing 2-3 times a day, rolling my calves and trying to be as proactive as possible. I do think for it to go away completely I will need to take a couple of weeks completely off running, but honestly want to try hard to keep it at bay and get through Monumental first.

I am dealing with also dealing stupid cold this week, so I am taking it easy- probably not speed at all and just a lower mileage week. Not a big deal.

What else is going on:

  • I am starting a stroller run meet up at Athletic Annex on Wednesday’s at 9:30am! This is something I kept talking about doing but not actually doing, so on Monday I decided to just make it happen. We’ll see if anyone show up today!! 🙂 The boys and I are heading to Einstein’s to get bagels and are looking forward to meeting some new friends. I hope I feel extra extroverty this morning. I usually do, but like everyone else, I have my days where I am feeling quiet. I mean, it doesn’t happen often, but it happens.
  • I kept seeing people post about it so I started Chalene Johnson’s 30 day pushso I decided to join that last week. Well, I’m already a little behind- on day three when really I should be on day eight or nine. That’s ok though, I’m doing it.
  • We are 6 weeks out from the Chicago marathon- excited for that because I’ll be running the race with my cadet from the Saucony 26 strong project! And that will put us 4 weeks out from Monumental. Lot’s of work to be done, but also lot’s of fun to be had.

Has anyone out there done the 30-day push? Good stuff? What do you think about the stroller meet up? I’m kind of excited about it- not much else like this in Indy and I think it has the potential to be really fun and bring a lot of fun people together.

Today is a new day. Although I was up a lot last night due to the noisy 11 lber sleeping in our room. I woke up feeling refreshed and happy. I don’t wake up feeling like this most days; most days it takes me at least an hour to start feeling that way. Can we organize this with our hormones that we wake up feeling like this everyday? Anytime I’m feeling off or crazy or if I’m feeling extra happy, I know the hormones are to blame or thank.

I enjoyed a peaceful pleasant morning getting lot’s of snuggles from big Lou. I am very well aware that this time passes quick and while I am a very go, go, go kind of person I have not skipped out on snuggles from my guy.

Today, I’m headed out for a 10 mile run. My longest post baby run so far. I haven’t been following any structured plan but have been running consistently and easy. I was feeling much more myself today than I have been. Glenn has had a fever and feeling really terrible, so I put my tough girl pants on and strollered it up for the first double digit run. I settled in around a 9:00 min pace and decided to hang on to that until that last few miles where I would pick it up. The towpath felt a little bumpy and the wind felt a little strong (although I’m sure it wasn’t- I’m just not used to running with the stroller right now!) Also- our tires in the stroller needed some air so that probably made it more difficult.

We did the Butler loop for the Bulldogs & my father in law who is the most hardcore Butler fan I know.  This was only about 3 miles into our run and Marshall was already passed out hard. I wore my Shamrock shirt for the first half of the run before I got too hot in honor of the Shamrock marathon today – two years since I ran it and set my marathon PR. Coming for you this fall!!

I ran south on the monon toward the house to finish the run- happy to be off the bumpy gravel & also have the wind at my back. But, there was a shady guy around 42nd street that was on a bike and he slowed down and hopped off to the side as I approached him and then got back on right behind me, I quickly turned around to go the other way and waited him out so he would get further along but then he did the same thing so Marshall and I immediately got off the trail. Something just wasn’t right with this guy and there wasn’t really any other people close enough by that I felt safe. This isn’t the first time I’ve had that feeling on the monon and I always trust my instincts when I get that feeling. Don’t even get me started on the stray dogs.

On another note, I’ve been wearing these Saucony Guides. I’m not usually a stability shoe runner, but these are feeling good. I only stopped wearing my orthotics back in June and who knows if my feet are werido right now coming off of the pregnancy.

After the run, Marshall and I headed to the store to get bananas (in pajamas of course) for our post run smoothie. He loves helping make smoothies and it was my best bribe to deter him from obsessing over not stopping at the park with three miles to go. I didn’t even realize he had woke up and of course when we run by canterbury park on cue he’s up and ready to play. I let him get pretzels and eat them out of the bag on the way home from the store and he acted like it was the best thing that ever happened to him.

I keep saying I’m going to sketch out my plan a little more, but other things on my to do list (like writing a blog post) keep trumping it. I’ll get there. If it were up to Glenn I’d be maxing out at 90 mile weeks when I’m in peak training for the fall. I’ll tell you now- not gonna happen. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Have a great week everyone!!

Holy hotness. Yesterday was my long run. 10 miles is what I’m considering my 19 week pregnant long run. I’m planning on running the Hendricks County Half Marathon in three weeks, so just keeping that long run around 10 miles. I’ll probably go for 11-12 next weekend and rock a big taper of 7 or so the following. 🙂 The plan is to run the race with the stroller. Glenn is racing hard (maybe going for the W depending on who shows up… it’s a small race and going by previous times, he’d be a good candidate to win.) After he races though- MY plan is for him to jog back to me and grab the stroller, run it in with me as his cool down. Then I’m only running 10 miles with the stroller instead of 13 depending on when he gets back to me. We’ll see.

Back to the run yesterday- yikes it was hot. We ran in Crown Point because we were visiting with Glenn’s family and there are a lot more hills there than in flat old Indianapolis where we run a lot. They really aren’t a big deal, but my heart rate goes up like crazy on hills right now and the heat was nasty. Even though I don’t have “goal times” when I run when I’m pregnant, it’s this little bug that gets in your ear once you’re running a certain pace that says, stay there, stay there. So I had in my head I wanted to run under 10:00 min/mile for the 10 miles. Glenn said “don’t be stupid,  you have nothing to prove” but I of course kept my eye on the watch and was happy every time I was under. Mind games this running thing causes. Not to worry- I would never go faster than I should. I was in control and not ever stupid. I knew it was hot and knew to keep heart rate down… 🙂 (I can just picture one of my aunts reading this and texting me saying…. “You be careful Lindsey Rose” Cheryl, I’m talking to you!!)

Overall I am so happy with the run- going into it, I was thinking it would feel like it would take forever, but it went by so fast and I felt great and enjoyed it. Legs didn’t feel tired until the last mile- all the work was controlling keeping my heart rate down and not breathing too hard haha. Not to mention, Marshall was so good the whole run- over an hour and a half of running is a long time, but he is doing so well in the stroller right now and I’m so thankful for that. We thought he would fall asleep early on because he got up super early but he was awake until mile 9. I was happy to have Glenn along with me to push the stroller. Much more fun than by my lonesome. I also had a very nice 3 mile recovery run today. There’s nothing I don’t love about an 11 minute mile right now. Relaxing, straight chillin’ and felt good to get out and run off the stiffness from the longer run Saturday.

Pre Run. All set with snacks & books.

photo (5)

That’s right- I made Glenn take a mid run pic- my sister in law was out of town but we ran by her house so I made him take a pic I could text her. This was mile 3.5 after a big hill. (Big in my book)

photo (3)

Done and very satisfied with my 10. Marshall finally fell asleep so we walked a mile more to increase the nap time. Do what you gotta do.

I’m not sure I’m interested in venturing over the 10-11 mile long run and maybe a couple of half marathons during this pregnancy. I did run up until the day before Marshall was born, but mostly 3-5 mile runs throughout the whole pregnancy. I don’t think I ever ran 10. It’s tough because the first trimester has you feeling so tired and lethargic that you don’t have energy for much and when you bounce back energy wise in your second trimester, you have to kind of build back up. That’s how it is for me at least.

So I’m happy where I’m at. Happy I am able to run, let alone keep a decent distance. I do know I should get back in the pool but the cooler temps we’ve had most of the summer have me obsessed with always just running outside. It’s easy, I don’t have to go anywhere, throw my shoes on, throw kid in stroller, go. Thankfully, the plantar fasciitis is pretty much gone and letting me run 5-6 days a week now. That stuff was no joke. I hope it never visits me again.

How was your LONG RUN this weekend? Did you have one?

Was it super hot where you are? (At least you weren’t doing Ironman Louisville in the heat!!)
