Emma Coburn joins me on the podcast today. Emma s a 2-time Olympian in the steeplechase, a Silver medalist in the 2016 Olympics and a Gold medalist at the 2017 World Championships! She runs for New Balance and is coached by her he husband Joe Bosshard. She was a 3 time NCAA champion in college where she was coached by Mark Wetmore and Heather Boroughs.
Emma is very involved in the sport outside of her own Professional running, she also the vice president of the Athletics Association- a non-profit to give athlete’s a voice and be heard by USATF, IAAF, USOC, etc. In 2018 her and her husband Joe started the Elk Run 5K to give back to the local community – having raised over $90,000 in 3 years for Gunnison County Cancer Support Charity – Living Journeys.
In this  episode we get to hear a lot about Emma’s career and also how her and the Boss team are making things happen in the midst of the pandemic to ensure racing opportunities. I loved hearing about their work ethic as a team and how Joe has inspired Emma and I know so many others to make things happen. We go all over the place and even get to her her favorite Taylor Swift song on the Lover album. 🙂

Grit Summer Distance Project

GRIT is a summer distance project — a virtual event meant to challenge your current distance goals, to go beyond your “normal,” to churn out miles on the hottest days of the year. To do this, you choose a distance tier (25, 75, 150, 225, or 300 miles) and complete that mileage within a 30-day span during the summer months (6/20-9/22). You choose the 30 days. Run every day, or run some of the days. Just finish the miles within a month’s time.

We’ve got a Bowerman Bro on the show today! Evan Jager is a two-time Olympian (2012 & 2016) and runs for Nike with the Bowerman Track Club. He holds the American Record in the 3,000 Steepchase and trains under coach Jerry Schumacher and Pascal Dobert.

Evan ran for the University of Wisconsin for only one year before turning to Professional running. It was a bold move and we talk about the decision to follow his coach (Jerry Schumacher) and pursue his dreams in Portland. He finished his college degree while training professionally in Portland. Shortly after turning pro, Evan suffered an intense ankle injury that left him not running for 6 months. We talk about navigating that in this episode, along with moving from a 5k runner to the Steeple Chase as his main event. We also talk about successes and other hard times in his career; like when he he won a Silver medal in the 2016 Olympics or when he was on track to break the 8 minute barrier in the Steeple and fell on the last water jump in Paris in 2015 at the Diamond League. Evan proves that when competing at the highest level, having the right mindset ad being your best self in training and come race day are a huge component to success.

Enjoy!

I was honored to talk with Courtney Frerichs for episode 86 of I’ll Have Another Podcast. Courtney is a middle distance runner who specializes in Steeplechase. Courtney competed in the 2016 Olympic games in Rio, and this past summer won a Silver Medal at the World Championships in London. Courtney runs for Nike with the Bowerman Track Club under Coach Jerry Schumacher.

In this episode Courtney and I talk about how her and her husband Griffen met, what her training looked like for London verses Rio and what her future goals are. Does she want to break 9 minutes in her event? Yes. You’ll learn that Courtney is also very studious and originally had plans to go to Medical School before her track career really took off. Courtney talks about how special the relationship she has with her teammates at the Bowerman Track Club is as well in this episode.
