Every time I’m through the first trimester I start dreaming of running fast again. I’m usually so tired and blobby feeling the first 14 weeks, and when I start feeling better, I start thinking about getting back in shape. It’s so far away and so close all at the same time. And for anyone wondering- I start running much slower with no hard effort as soon as I find out I’m pregnant. I see no point in trying to run fast when my body is going through all that. If I run a race for fun, I might run a little harder at the end just for kicks, but nothing crazy!

postrun

I just read Molly’s post about her different marathons and I am specifically intrigued by her most recent marathon that she ran on a whim. She was fit from Boston training, after not having the race she was trained for, she decided to run another and ran strong. Not a PR, but strong and not so calculated. For me, as someone who runs for their hobby, not their job, I like the idea of that. I like just picking up and running when  you want to run and not being quite so obsessed with timing and numbers.

When the pressure is off, you sometimes run your best races. In 2010 I PRed in the marathon and it was after I decided a few days before the race that I would just see how I felt and not necessarily run really fast. I had just taken a new job and was a little overwhelmed so decided to take the pressure off. I ended up running fast for where I was at that time and had a great race.

I haven’t truly raced a marathon in three years– which sounds like a really long time, but really a lot has happened in those three years. (I have ran other distances since then but not a marathon!)

Last Marathon I raced – Shamrock Marathon – Early 2013

(I did run Boston in 2014 but not as a race, just for fun!)

A big surgery – Late 2013

A little surgery – Early 2015

Crazy to think by the time I go at it again it will likely be a solid 4-5 years. Would have been only 2.5 had I not torn my plantar fascia last summer. An opportunity lost because I have stupid feet. I could be sitting on a new, pretty, hard earned marathon PR right now.

BUT. I am a big fan of not making a huge deal out of set backs (not that that baby in 2015 is something I consider a setback!!) because usually there’s nothing you can do about it and there are much more important things in the world to worry about than my running. Truly. And I mean that 100%. Perspective is important. Like anything someone is super involved with and into- it can become an idol of sorts and a selfish obsession and I really never want running to be that to me. Sure I want to run fast and give myself challenges, but I hope that I remember through it all that it’s not all about me and to never lose sight of that.

Anyway, I just walked away from this post to my 1.5 year old with a fistful of dog poop in his hands, so I’m gonna leave it at that.

Second trimester dreaming. I might be delusional that I’ll have any desire to train for a marathon anytime soon after this baby is born; we’ll see.

PS: Have you rated and reviewed my podcast yet? Would you? THANKS!

Some of you might have seen on instagram that I posted we are expecting our third baby in October. Surprise, surprise- no wonder I haven’t been writing about my training right? I’m sure some people probably guessed it. 🙂

pregp

The first trimester was shitty and tiring per usual, but we’ve reached 17 weeks and I’m starting to feel myself again for the most part. Thank God for the second trimester. Anytime I know someone who is pregnant for the first time I tell them the sweet spot is usually weeks 15-35. At least for me it has been.

The hardest part was that I made the decision to launch my podcast right before I found out I was pregnant. It was just a tough time to have the energy to get it done when I had no idea what I was doing. Maybe it was the best thing- it kept me from wallering too much. (though trust me, there was plenty of wallering.) I am grateful for a husband who has catered to my ridiculous cravings – random milkshake run to Chick fil A anyone? And the need for extra rest- which is hard to come by when chasing after a 3.5 year old and 15 month old.

I’ve been running around 4 days a week for the most part throughout my pregnancy so far. Someone recently just asked me on instagram (Morganruns_ind) how much I push myself in my first trimester and if I just stay at the same level I’m at. So, I thought I’d answer that here. The answer is I don’t really push myself when I’m pregnant– especially in the first trimester. My body screams, you are pregnant, you are tired and you don’t need to push. So I don’t.

We ran the 500 Festival Mini Marathon last weekend, and finished that race around 1:54- running the second half probably 2 minutes faster than the first. I had no plan other than kind of wanting to run under 2 hours but completely just listened to my body and did what felt right. Which meant running much slower at the start and feeling ok to finish a little faster. It’s funny though because we ran the Hoosier Half Marathon on much more challenging course 4 weeks earlier (when I was 12 weeks pregnant and feeling much more tired in general) in a time of 1:51. I surprisingly felt much better that day and had fun on the Bloomington hills. You forget how much more fun running up and down hills can be when you’re so used to running in flat Indianapolis.

Glenn has ran both half marathons with me and then usually does a bigger run the day after. Now that his iron is getting back up- and he’s starting to feel better, he has his eye on training for a fall marathon PR. Guess that means I’ll hope for a warm day at Monumental and I’ll be out there with not two but three little Heins. Who wants to babysit?

Thank you everyone for the well wishes with baby number three and thank you so much for everyone who is supporting the podcast– every download, subscriber and rate/review is helpful in my journey to make this thing a success! We’ve hit over 10K downloads in just 5 weeks and have moved up on itunes by a lot in the new and noteworthy section and it’s all because of you guys listening and helping spread the word- so thank you, thank you!!

You’ve got one more day to enter the Women’s Running Cover Runner Contest.

  • Submissions are closed tomorrow September 28th
  • Don’t be shy to nominate yourself!
  • Nominate a friend who you know won’t submit but you know deserves it!
  • It really takes 30 minutes to apply. Just know what you want to say and speak from your heart.

Last year when I applied, I was nervous because I felt a little silly writing about myself like that. I knew what I wanted to say though and it just came out. Then, once I was selected for the top 9, I was nervous about recruiting votes. BUT Glenn encouraged me to just own it and go all in. People were super supportive and no one make me feel like I didn’t belong in that position. It was so cool to see my community of friends and family get behind me. (Indianapolis rocks by the way, our city was all about it! Several news stations and radio shows picked it up. Our “little” BIG city is really great and the running community specifically is like none other.

Here is the post I wrote about Last year’s cover. And even better- here is the article that Caitlyn wrote. Caitlyn was so fun to work with- for the actual interview, we simply sat down for a couple of hours and just talked about my story and what running has meant to me over the past 15 years, specifically that last year. My “Find your strong moment”. The rest of the Women’s Running crew was amazing to work with too- Jessie, Erin, Nicki- all so great and was so fun getting to know them.

Here are some pictures from the cover shoot last year:

I had no idea what I was doing. I was 13 weeks pregnant with my second baby, so naturally was super tired and felt blah, but this crew helped me feel confident and beautiful. And provided coffee and good music. (Big Lou liked the coffee guys. I don’t think the two of us would have survived an all day photo shoot without it. )

I’ve also been able to develop a great relationship with Saucony which started with the contest as they were the sponsor last year. I am now a coach for the Saucony 26 Strong project and have had a great experience with that. (It’s a different sponsor this year for the contest, but still sure to be a great experience, I assume!)

HOLDING MAG

Thanks again to everyone who got behind me last year! Can’t wait to see who the top 9 will be this year!

SO this post is me encouraging YOU to just apply. WHY NOT? Stop what you’re doing and take 30 minutes to do it. Just speak from your heart and the words will come.

Apply TODAY.

Alright, I’m 6 days out from my due date. I’m not feeling like this baby is going to come anytime early. I’m totally ok with that, because although I’m not sleeping well right now- I know it’s much better than what it will be once there is a second kid.

I’m still running. I thought I might have given up on it for the rest of the pregnancy… I went 7 days without when Marshall was sick -I wasn’t getting much sleep and I was just exhausted from taking care of my sicky boy. When your this far in, if you take 7 days off, who knows if you’ll be able to get going again!

I proved to myself that 7 days ain’t not thang, gave it a go Monday, Wednesday & Friday this week. Monday was a weird run/walk because I had a cramp I couldn’t get rid of. Wednesday however was a monster 5 miler. I for sure thought anything over 3 miles was out of the question. But pregnant or not- when you’re feeling good and getting into a rhythm on a run, you don’t want to stop. I took my time warming up but slowly sped up and polished off the last mile at 8:34 pace. It felt so refreshing to work hard.

Running while pregnant is strange. For awhile I really settled into that 10-11 minute mile pace, but the further into my third trimester I have gotten, I’ve been running closer to 9:30-10:00 pace- even with some sub 9 minute miles in there. Glenn said it probably feels better to run a little faster because my stride is more natural at that pace. I never really thought about that, but I think he’s right. I finished the week today with 3 miles around 10 minute pace. Felt good, but worked for each mile.

IMG_3036

Due in 8 Days.

A little note on the above picture- my belly looks deceivingly smaller than it actually is. But really- I took this picture in the gym locker room- and was already nervous someone was going to walk in on me taking a weird selfie of my belly so I wasn’t about to re-take a bunch. Nothing like a grown woman taking selfies in a gym locker room.

So this baby will come no later than 10 days from now. I’m excited for the year to come. Excited to meet this kid and find out boy or girl.

As far as running goals go, Glenn and I both signed up for the Monumental Marathon for 2015. Already committing to one of our favorite races. We aren’t sure if we are both going to race or if maybe I race and he paces with me or who knows.

I really can’t decide if I want him to run with me or not. Sometimes I think it would be helpful, sometimes I like the idea of doing it without him. Either way, I’m excited that my friend Larra has decided to run as well and I’ll have a great training partner for some of my runs!

I’m definitely going to race at least one half before Monumental as well and plan to run the Monumental mile – this will be the second year for it. I joked to Larra that I have no clue how to race a mile- just run as fast as you can for 5-6 minutes and immediately puke upon crossing the finish line?  We’ll see, but it will be fun to try something different. Distance is my strength though, so it might not be so pretty.

We’ll keep you posted on baby news. Today, like everyday I asked Marshall if he was ready for the new baby and he told me I already had a baby. I also told him I wouldn’t be able to carry him everywhere (he wants to be carried CONSTANTLY right now), once the baby comes and he politely responded that he couldn’t walk. Oh boy, here we go.

Alright, facing reality, I’m due in two weeks. Yes, I already know if I go on time, I’ll be cleared to run February 26th, if I’m 4 days late when my scheduled c-section is, I’ll be cleared on March 2nd. I had a c-section with Marshall because he was breech. Since I didn’t labor with him or anything I’m a good candidate to have a regular birth, but with someone who has had a c-section they won’t induce me won’t let me go to far over due date, so we’re giving it 4 days overdue. We have had a heck of a week with Marshall being sick, having a temperature for 6 days. I think he’s training us up nicely for what newborn sleep deprivation is like. He’s been such a good sleeper since 5-6 months, that we’ve had two solid years of good sleep.

A couple of weeks ago Glenn sent me a general outline of my 2015 comeback- mileage wise. My plan for my return to running after this baby is to take things a little more gradually than I did after Marshall. 2.5 years later, I’m a little smarter (I hope) and a little older (I know) and the last thing I want to do is find myself with an injury. Glenn and I both hit 30 and realized how much more important it was at this point in our lives to be cautious of doing too much too soon.

I’ve maintained decent mileage throughout my pregnancy. Up until around week 30, I was running around 5 days a week and with 2 weeks until my due date, I’m down to 3-6 mile runs, 3-4 days a week. The majority of those runs being 3 miles. I think I’m probably running just a little more this time around than I did with Marshall, but not much.

I run mostly around a 10:00 minute mile pace. If I’m on the treadmill, I’ll start around 5.7 speed and slowly speed up to something around 6.2. I’f I’m feeling crazy, I’ll ramp it up to an 8 minute mile for a few minutes, but this is rare.

I ran the Donut 5K last two weekends ago just for fun. I was helping with registration and awards anyway, so figured I’d get my run in. This is a great race put on by Carmel Road racing Group and it tripled in size this year!! Of course I was running with no expectations, but since it was a race, pushed a little harder than my everyday runs. I crossed the finish line having no clue if the clock would say 24 minutes or 30 minutes haha. Turns out it was 25:02 and I felt very strong and happy with that 4 weeks out from my due date.

IMG_2726

Then, just when I thought I gave up the 5 + mile runs, I busted out a 10K on my parents treadmill on Christmas Eve. I went into this run, (like every run) assuming I’d do 3 miles, but felt so great that I pushed through for a full hour. 37 weeks,  I’ll take it.

IMG_2794

I will no doubt take the full recommended 6 weeks off post baby. I don’t understand why anyone does not follow this guideline. There is absolutely no reason to run sooner. Go for some big walks if you are ansy to workout. You just grew a human in your uterus, give it a rest.

With my comeback after Marshall, I ramped things up quickly. I somehow avoided injury, but I’m not sure why I thought I had to take on such big miles so soon. I ran a half marathon about 10 weeks postpartum, which after taking 6 weeks off- that was on only 3.5 weeks of training. And at four months postpartum, I ran a marathon. Then another one at five months and another at nine months. In all of this, I think the biggest feat and run I was most proud of was my first post baby 20 miler, which happened while pushing a stroller. Just look at that cute little guy I got to run with.

marshbaby

I most certainly won’t be jumping into all of this so soon this time. My big marathon goal will be in the fall, which will give me 10-11 months and then another in the spring. Based on my Shamrock PR, 9 months post Marshall, I think these goals are realistic. Maybe little PR in the fall, BIG PR in the spring of 2016. Races to be determined. I do have big goals in mind. Coming off my surgery in 2013 and then this pregnancy, I’m overdue for some big runs and times to chase down.

I do want to race plenty of shorter distances in my training leading up to marathon. I have some barriers to break in the half marathon that I haven’t given myself the proper opportunity to accomplish and for sure want to knock my 5K time down.

I’m not sure what training will really look like with two kids instead of one, but I’ll be ready to work hard. I miss the post workout endorphins that come from hard workouts. I’m going to remember though that you can’t jump in where you left off. I’m assuming I’ll be dedicated to quite a few early morning workouts at the gym for a while- at least until new baby is old enough to be initiated into Kids Club where they have to be 3 months. I have a feeling Marshall will be super cute and protective of his little brother or sister at Kids Club.

We’ve got 2ish weeks to go. I better start getting ready for this kid. What will it be? Girl or Boy? Do you have a guess? I think I’ll be more surprised if it’s a girl, only because I already have a boy and know the ropes with him. Who knows. I’m a little more sold on our boy name than girl name though.

We participated in the Drumstick Dash once again this year- a tradition for our family- I think we’ve only missed once since we moved to Indy after college in 2006.

It was pretty freaking cold, as it was last year- so I think for 2015 we are due for some warmer weather. Marshall was not thrilled with the cold.

We were fortunate enough to be able to use the VIP tent before the race- which was heated & had lot’s of donuts. I was most happy with the heat and Marshall was most happy about the donuts. Big thanks to Steve Kerr for including us.

I got to start 5 minutes ahead of the group as a “celebrity runner” No I don’t think I’m a celebrity runner- but the whole Women’s Running Cover thing made that possible. The celebrity runners were mostly local news anchors and radio personalities. It was great to see a lot of familiar faces before the race- congrats to my friend Larra, who won the celebrity division- although I still don’t know what she actually ran because we weren’t chipped! I’m excited to train with Larra next year when I’m not running 11 minute miles.

Since I hit my third trimester, I’ve been consistently running 3-5 miles 4 days a week, around a 10:30-11:00/min mile. Well, I guess when you start a race, whether you’re pregnant or not- your 10:30 mile drops down to 8:45 or so. I knew I was running too fast for my 33 week pregnant self, but I was having fun.

Around mile 1.5, the race caught up to me and I of course stopped to take a picture of the lead pack, because that’s what I do. I cheered on some runners I knew and that was fun. Around mile 2 I saw Glenn- pushing Marshall running a 6 minute mile, NBD. His plan was to race with the stroller to get a little workout in, but for some reason I ended up taking over stroller duty- (still not sure why) and ran it it in for the lats 2.5 miles.

Well, wouldn’t you know- Marshall turns into a crying mess at this point and I end up pulled over on the side of the race for a minute looking for a donut, a paci, anything and I got nothing. I see Glenn with about a half mile to go and he had taken off with the freaking paci. I could have killed him. No really. Runners who passed us were super friendly and tried to help cheer Marshall up for the most part- but even looking at a 2 year old having a tantrum can sometimes make it worse. Oh boy. It was also fun to see plenty of friends (Nita, Lesley, Brian, etc.) pass by as we made our way to the finish line.

We finished in one piece, rode a train and and headed back to the car. I have no idea what I actually ran the race in time wise, since I’m pretty much anti watch right now. I only knew my first mile because I was running with someone who told me. And I only know my pace on other days when I run on the treadmill or when I run with Glenn, who is strava obsessed and wouldn’t miss logging any miles.

I think next year, I’ll race it ad Glenn can push the double stroller next to me as I race.

This is Marshall wanting to ride on that darn train again, while also being cold and tired.

UP NEXT: Glenn is racing the Jackson 50/50 this weekend! It’s a 50K and 50 Mile race- and he’s doing the 50 miler. I’m excited because there are 5 loops, each 10 miles, so we get to see him quite a bit during the race. My Dad is loading up his RV and we will be cheering, while my mom watches Marshall for us in Btown.

The course is supposed to be fairly difficult- at least elevation wise, not sure how technical it is though. It will be interesting to see how he does compared to Mohican back in June. Definitely a little bit of different training as he’s just coming off Monumental. He ran 8:07 at Mohican, placing 6th and was really happy with the experience, time and place for his first 50 miler. It’s looking like things could shape up around the same for this race.

As for my race- I have 6 weeks to go with this baby.

It’s happening. Although I’ve slowed down a lot this entire pregnancy, I even started out the first 10 weeks not running at all due to plantar fasciitis and had to build back up. I was able to do that nicely and really started feeling good around week 15 or 16. My foot was better, my body was accustomed to carrying a human and all was feeling pretty darn solid. There is a reason that second trimester is the best. Almost no more nausea, not too huge yet and aside from the annoying headaches at that point, it’s really the best. Well, the third trimester has hit me and the feeling of being trapped is happening. I’ve gained around 12 lbs at this point, which I assume is around where I was last time…  but when I run, that 12 lbs feels like 50 lbs.

I remember this so clearly when I was pregnant with Marshall.

A 10 minute mile feels like an 8 minute mile. You get out of breath going up any incline. You see other women running by like they are the most graceful, light human being to ever walk the planet and you wonder… HOW will I ever feel like that again. I’m thankful I’ve been through this before. I know it comes back. But man it feels impossible right now.

Glenn and I ran a very slow 6 miles on Saturday and that was a feat in itself. At almost 11 minute miles, I had no desire to run any further and it took will power to make it that far. My original goal was at the very least 6, at the most 10- and I thought I’d land around 8. I have a thing with keeping a 10 mile base on my weekend long run, but that hasn’t happened in two weeks. Last week I hit 7. Ran the 7 too fast (too fast meaning average 9:30 mile pace) and there was no way I could have made it to 10. I was short on time and 7 was my goal from the start, but if making it to 10 was my goal- that would have meant at the fastest a 10:30 mile pace at this point.

We have 12 weeks to go. I don’t put pressure on myself for any big athletic or exercise goals when I’m pregnant, but I do stay determined to stay active and not sloth around. If it comes to the point where running isn’t happening or I just don’t wanna… walking will do, that’s fine. But I’m going to try to keep at it all the way through like I did with Marshall. I don’t know if my 10 mile long runs are behind me, we’ll see what next weekend brings. (Although I don’t my 10 miles will be a priority because I’ll be in super fan mode at Monumental)

I am enjoying my last bit of time with just Marshall. He kind of knows there is a baby coming, but obviously doesn’t realize how his world is about to be rocked.

I ran the Back on My Feet Marathon Relay on Saturday with friends from the Indy Women’s training program I coach. It was a bit cold and windy for the first weekend in October, but we brought plenty of warm clothes and blankets. The old Washington St. Bridge where everyone sets up their camp always feels even windier than it really is.

Running this relay is fun to me because 1. I used to organize the race when I worked for Back on My Feet as the Communications Director and 2. I love to support Back on My Feet. I do not currently run with any of the teams. They meet at 5:45am Mon, Wed, Fri and right now in my life, I’m just not into waking up at that hour. So promoting, what they do and being involved in their events is something I always try to support and be a part of.

The relay is a full marathon and I ran on a team of 3– so we were each set to run 8.6 miles each— 4 laps at 2.2 Mi each. I have no clue what my splits were but I definitely ran faster than my normal pregnant pace… especially for the first two laps. Just because it felt good to work harder. I can totally feel the speedier paces in my lower calves this week. I ended up running Michelle’s last lap with her to bring me to 11 miles for the day. (which was really my plan all along because I have a thing with getting a 10ish mile pregnant long run in on the weekends if I’m feeling it) 10 is my go to number. This weekend I was 26 weeks, so we’ll see how long the 10 mile runs go to. It’s definitely a bigger distance than I was running when I was pregnant with Marshall.

I was also so excited and surprised to see my friend James at the race. He was one of the very first Members of Back on My Feet Indianapolis. He is just getting back into running after a little hiatus and busted out 4.4 Mi on Saturday. I haven’t seen him in over a year and I have a good handful of special memories with him from the early days of Back on My Feet. I ran his first marathon with him in 2011 (when I was unknowingly at the time 6 weeks pregnant with Marshall). It was so good to see him and know that he’s back at it.

Nice work to Back on My Feet for putting on a successful race- I know our group had a lot of fun! I’m also so proud of the women’s training program ladies I coach- everyone did a great job and stuck it out in the cold. It’s kind of tough to start and stop, start and stop when you it’s chilly out!

I love a good relay- and the race got me excited for more in the future- 2 man team with Glenn for Red Eye Relay next July? Possibly in the cards. It’s fun to run these races non-competitively but you know I’ll always have a little competitive drive and think about it- last year I ran Rock the Relay as a two man team (same relay course & distance as BoMF relay) and it was an insane workout- and while it hurt, it was fun to be competitive out there. Nothing like 6 X 2.2 Mi repeats. Ouch.

Three more weeks and they’ll all be hitting the road for Indy Monumental!

Have you ever ran the Back on My Feet Relay?

Do you know about Back on My Feet? Check them out if not!!

What is your favorite kind of relay?
