Olympic Marathon Trials https://lindseyhein.com Tue, 05 May 2020 14:03:44 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=7.0 Episode 247: Laura Thweatt – 2:25 Marathoner & 5th place at the Olympic Marathon Trials https://lindseyhein.com/2020/05/05/episode-247-laura-thweattd-225-marathoner-5th-place-at-the-olympic-marathon-trials/ Tue, 05 May 2020 14:03:44 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=11913 more »]]> Laura Thweatt, a 2:25 marathoner recently placed 5th at the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta. Though the goal was to make the team and place top three at the trials, there was a lot to be said about Laura’s 5th place finish and in a big way that day, she resurrected her marathon career after a long battle with injury.

Laura raced fiercely and bravely in February at the trials and laid it all out there. It was so fun to see her race with so much confidence and if you weren’t a fan before I don’t see how you won’t be after hearing this conversation. On top of being an insanely talented and driven runner, she is really fun!

Laura lives in Boulder, Co and trains with Joe Bosshard’s group. In this conversation we get to hear about what it’s like to be the only marathoner in that group and why she chose to train with them. We also get to hear about how different her training is now compared to what she used to do and what the trials race meant to her. Laura and I also might just get into a little “Love is Blind” talk as well at the end of the conversation, because a girl just can’t help herself when she finds out the person she is interviewing is invested in trash TV like she is.

Enjoy my conversation with Laura!

You’ll hear about what happened during the trails, how she felt and how she’s feeling post race. We also talk a little bit about how she’s been feeling since the separation from her long term coach Alberto Salalzar and how it’s been working with her new coach, Paula Radcliffe.

Make sure you listen to the first two times she was on the show- episode 128 and episode 179.

Aliphine ran a time of 2:27:23, 8 seconds in front of second place finisher Molly Siedel who she worked together with over the last few miles to solidify their spots on team USA for the 2020 Olympics in Tokoyo.

Episode 228: Sally Kipyego https://lindseyhein.com/2020/02/24/episode-228-sally-kipyego/ https://lindseyhein.com/2020/02/24/episode-228-sally-kipyego/#comments Mon, 24 Feb 2020 20:38:55 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=11742 more »]]> Sally Kipyego is one to be watching in Atlanta this weekend for the Olympic Marathon Trials! She is fit and ready to compete. Coming off a stellar fall marathon in Berlin where she ran a 2:25, which was a three minute PR. It is exciting to think about what she can do coming off that cycle into this one coming off a trying couple of years post partum and battling some sickness. It feels even more exciting thinking about how fresh her legs may be and how determined her spirit is after the long road back.

Sally is originally from Kenya and came to the US for college where she competed for Texas Tech where she won 9 NCAA titles (3 consecutive in cross country, outdoor 10k + 5k, and indoor 3k and 5k (3 consecutive titles). She then went on to run professionally for Nike with the Oregon Track Club. She holds a silver medal in the World championships in the 10k to Kenyan and went on to win an Olympic silver medal for Kenya the following year in the 10,000m.

Sally debuted the marathon in NYC in 2016, finishing second to Mary Keitany, ahead of third place Molly Huddle. She ran a time of 2:28 and later found out she was 8 weeks pregnant during that marathon. In 2017 she gave birth to her daughter Emma and battled with some major post partum struggles coming back, as well as a bout with Malaria and Pnemonia.

She finally has found her strength back and raced super well this past fall and I can’t wait to see what she can accomplish at the trials this weekend. So much on the horizon for Sally and if you aren’t already following her career- get on it!!

Lindsay is one to be watching at the Olympic Marathon Trials in two weeks in Atlanta! She has a marathon PR of 2:28 and is ready for the hills in Atlanta. She is a true marathoner and favors that distance most.

She ran for the Washington Huskies in college and earned Division 1 All American Honors. Post college she ran with a team in Washington D.C. for Mizzuno and then ran for Nike for a bit. She moved around quite a bit before she landed in Boulder and recently signed with Asics.

I’ll Have Another Podcast Episode 58: Teal Burrell

Teal is a competitive runner who went from a 4 hour marathon to a 2:42 marathon. Her 2:42 qualified her for the Olympic Marathon Trials, which was her big goal and she ran in the trials in February 2016 on a very hot day. This did not happen over night- she worked really hard for several years an ran several marathons to achieve this goal. Not all of those marathons were PRs or amazing races, but she kept working at it and made it happen.

Teal has her Doctorate in Neuropsychology. Girlfriend completed 9 years of undergrad + grad school. Clearly we have a high achiever on our hands. She’s a freelance writer and writes both about running stuff and science stuff. She lives in Richmond VA with her husband and their brand new baby girl Maya! Teal was just a couple days away from her due date when we recorded this episode, so lot’s has changed in her world since then!

In this episode we talk all about her journey to getting to that 2:42 marathon, I had so may questions for her that just came flying out. I could have picked her brain about running stuff for hours. I have so much respect for her discipline, hard work and fearlessness of not only setting a big goal, but putting it out there for the world to see and going for it. We also talk about her career, favorite books and more. Such a fun conversation!

Congrats on the baby girl Teal!
