NYC Marathon https://lindseyhein.com Fri, 15 Nov 2019 03:00:16 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=7.0 Episode 209: Sinead Diver https://lindseyhein.com/2019/11/15/episode-209-sinead-diver/ Fri, 15 Nov 2019 03:00:16 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=11564 more »]]> Sinead Diver just placed 5th at the TCS NYC Marathon. She was the first non-African to cross the finish line in a time of 2:26:23. Sinead has been taking the marathon by storm since her debut go at it in 2014 when she ran the Melbourne marathon in 2:34:15 peaking out at only around 55 miles per week. In 2018 she had a breakthrough race when she ran a time of 2:25:17 at the Melbourne marathon. Then this past spring she placed 7th at the London marathon finishing in a blazing fast time of 2:24:11.

Sinead works full time as an IT consultant and is the Mother of two boys. She started running after the birth of her first son at the age of 33. A friend noticed she had some speed in her, so she gradually started entering races and realizing her potential in the sport. Sinead says her strength lies in the marathon and it’s so exciting to see her excel in the sport. Her message that I hard loud and clear today is to not let other set limitations on you – whether that’s because of your age, gender or experience. I just love that message so much.

Shalane Flanagan is an icon in the sport of running, she’s run Professionally for Nike since 2004 and runs with the Bowerman Track Club. In her long career, Shalane has set countless American Records, is a 4-time Olympian with a Silver Medal in the the 10K and went on to take the win at the NYC Marathon in 2017. She is the co-author of the books Run Fast Eat Slow and Run Fast Cook Fast Eat Slow and is currently excited about pursuing coaching in her future.

Shalane is kind, honest and fierce. In this conversation we talk about what she’s up to right now and what her vision for the future looks like. We also get talk about her win in NYC in 2017, the 2018 race and we did chat a little bit about the monsoon in Boston last year. My favorite part of the conversation though was hearing Shalane talk about her desire to become a Mom – listen up and hear all about it!

You can find 15 extra minutes of conversation with Shalane and many other guests by supporting the show on patreon.

What an honor to have Meb Keflezighi on the show today! Meb is truly a legend in the sport of running. Meb is an Olympic Silver Medalist in the Marathon, he is a NYC Marathon and Boston Marathon Champion and had a marathon career with crazy longevity. Meb was born in Eritera and his family came to the United States in 1987 – we get to hear about that piece of his life in the beginning of the episode – which is a huge part of hist story and the person that he is.

Meb ran for UCLA where he ran four NCAA championships and went on to hold the American Record in the 10K and compete Professionally for over 20 years running 26 competitive marathons after college. Meb is the Father of three, married to his wife Yordanos for 15 years.

We all love Meb. It’s his honesty, his courage, his confidence and his humility We’ve seen him accomplish big goals and create some of the most incredible moments in the history in the sport of running. Like winning the Boston Marathon in 2014. I don’t know where you were when that happened by t I was on the course running and celebrating with everyone ese who was experiencing the joy and redemption it made us all feel just a year after the Boston bombings.

Meb has shown us a beautiful journey as e’ve all followed his career over the years. The longevity of it. The heart behind it. The hard races that maybe didn’t go as planned but we watched as he made the most of those circumstances. We saw him get back up and belive in what he was truly capable of time and time again.

I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation with Meb as much as I loved having it!

Enjoy!

Two returning guests on the show today. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know some members of the NAZ Elite group and when Ben and Scott published their book “Inside a Marathon“, it made sense to bring them back on to chat. The cool thing about the running community is everyone is usually out to support one another and I want to see this book do really well for these guys who put so much heart into it. I love learning about their program.

You heard from Scott on this podcast fairly recently in episode 146 and Coach Ben in episode 140 – both episodes you get to know them on a deeper level, but today we talk about the NYC Marathon; where Scott placed 7th and second American running a 2:12:28! We also talk about training and how they wrote this unique and inspiring book and Scott and I might have a little race bet going for Boston in the spring.

Enjoy my conversation with Scott & Ben!

Stephanie Bruce ran an impressive PR of 2:29:21 at CIM just weeks after placing 11th at the NYC Marathon. The PR was set from 7 years ago, a time she ran before she had both of her kids.

Steph runs for NAZ Elite and if you haven’t heard my first conversation with her where you can learn a little more depth about her career, make sure to check out episode 130 of the podcast!

In this episode Steph shares with us what the decision making process to go ahead and run CIM so soon after NYC looked like and what she actually felt like during the race where she did grab that PR. She also talks to us about her plans for 2019 and thoughts on going for another marathon before the trials in the fall. She is wise and kind and I always love chatting with her!

Enjoy!

Molly Huddle placed 4th at the TCS NYC Marathon and Roberta Groner placed 12th and first in the masters division. Both of these ladies are returning guests on my show and I was excited to hear all about their experience at the NYC Marathon this year.

This was Molly’s 3rd Marathon and she ran a PR in a time of 2:26:44. Molly holds the American Record in the half marathon and is sponsored by Saucony. Roberta has started running competitively only in the last three-four years and has been chipping away her times and proving that she can run with the best in the World. She came in third place this summer at the Rock and Roll Philly Half and placed second last year at CIM in a time of 2:30. This year in NYC she ran a 2:31:01. She’s a full time nurse and the mother of three.

To learn more about both of these ladies – head back to my first episodes with them!

150: NYC Marathon Recap with Carrie Tollefson & Interview with Champion Mary Keitany https://lindseyhein.com/2018/11/08/150-nyc-marathon-recap-with-carrie-tollefson-interview-with-champion-mary-kietany/ https://lindseyhein.com/2018/11/08/150-nyc-marathon-recap-with-carrie-tollefson-interview-with-champion-mary-kietany/#comments Thu, 08 Nov 2018 12:24:27 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=9980 more »]]>

Carrie Tollefson and I talk all things TCS NYC Marathon in this episode and then I wrap it up with a conversation with the 2018 NYC Marathon Champion Mary Kietany.

Carrie is an Olympian, and you can find her now doing the broadcast for major marathons, podcasting and being the mom to three young kids. I’ve gotten to know her through my podcasting work and am so thankful to have a friend like Carrie. She really knows what she’s talking about in the sport and it was so fun to hear her thoughts on the marathon this year.

Mary Kietany is one of the best marathoners of all time. She finished the NYC Marathon on Sunday in a time of 2:22:48- closing the second half in 1:06:58. She has a PR of 2:17:01 in the marathon and just won her fourth NYC Marathon. She is also a three-time London Marathon Champion. Mary is not only an accomplished marathoner- she holds a half marathon PR is 1:04:55. Mary is from Kenya and is the mother of two. If anyone is going to grab Paula Radcliffe’s Marathon World Record – Mary is the one to do it. In August 2018 she was honored by the Shoe4Africa foundation and she opened the Mary Keitany Shoe4Africa school in Torokwonin, Baringo County, Kenya.

Note: The audio on the Mary part of this episode is a bit off because I had to use a recording app I am not used to and I am a bit muffled for that reason. Apologies in advance!

2018 Boston Marathon Champion Des Linden joins me on the podcast today. Des is one of the most consistent American Marathoners of all time. She was chasing down her big W for over a decade and made it happen this past spring on an insane day at the Boston Marathon.

Beyond her epic Boston win, Des is a two-time Olympian in the marathon and also placed second at Boston in 2011, Chicago and the US Olympic Trials and she holds a marathon PR of 2:22:38.

Des recently had a coaching change and is running the TCS New York City Marathon this Sunday coming of a new and different type of training. She talks about taking risks and the excitement that brings to the start of another marathon. She is real. She is down to earth and you guys will feel that in our conversation.

Best of luck to anyone running the NYC Marathon, Monumental Marathon or any other race this weekend!

Scott Fauble joins me on the show today! Scott runs for HOKA NAZ Elite and is currently training for the TCS New York City Marathon. This will be his second marathon- he debuted last fall with the 12th fastest American Debut ever in 2:12:35 at the Frankfurt Marathon.

Scott is a Colorado native and had a standout career at Wheat Ridge High School. He was the State Cross Country Champion in 2009 and went on to finish 17th at the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships later that season. He then chose to run collegiately at the University of Portland before going Pro.

In this episode of the podcast we get to talk about Scott’s career and NYC training, but we also get to talk about anxiety and overcoming hard things. Scott has a really great perspective and outlook on the sport and life. I really enjoyed getting to know him and I think you will too!

Roberta Groner is a 2:30 marathoner, full-time nurse and mother of three boys. She recently ran a half marathon at the Philly Rock’n’Roll half marathon running a time of 1:12:20, finishing third behind Des Linden and Kellyn Taylor. She took a huge break from running toward the end of college and then after 10 years, when her youngest son was two, decided she wanted to do something for herself. So she started running again. She ran her first marathon in Chicago just 7 years ago in a time of 3:12 to debut. She’s been chasing down faster times ever since.

Now a masters runner, at the age of 40, Roberta is still competing at the highest level with the open field and is putting no limits on herself. Since our interview she announced she is running the NYC Marathon – put this inspiring woman on your list of people to follow and cheer for!

Enjoy!
