She is one of the newest members of Hoka One One NAZ Elite and we get to learn all about her journey to joining the team in this episode.

Lauren ran for Baylor where she has held several school records and finished 7th in the 1500 at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships. After college she ran with Asics for a bit and joined a training group, but ultimately ended up training with her husband coaching her for several years before joining NAZ Elite. I LOVE the story of how she pursued joining the team- you’re gonna love it too. She currently holds a 15:10 PR in the 5,000m and a 31:53 10,000m PR. Though she was an 800-1500 meter runner for years, she now focuses on the 5,000m and 10,000m.

This will be Ben’s fourth appearance on I’ll Have Another podcast; you can learn more about his story in episode 140, he then came on with one of his athletes Scott Fauble in episode 261 and was on again right before the Olympic Marathon Trials this year in episode 229. I should mention that 3 of his athletes placed in the top 10 at the Trials- one of whom won the race – Aliphine Tuliamak.

The NAZ Elite group is one of my favorite groups to follow- along with their incredible hard work and talent- they are fun and very down to earth.

Ben Bruce joins me on the show today coming off his Chicago Marathon pacing duties! I was so excited to hear all about what that experience was like.

Ben is a professional runner and coach with NAZ Elite, he’s a husband and father to two boys. He is married to Pro Runner Steph Bruce- who was one of the several women he had the opportunity to pace in Chicago. Ben also works with runners of all ages and abilities, along with his wife, through their coaching service, Running with the Bruces.

Ben has represented the US on three World Championship teams in track, cross country and the half marathon. He has also qualified and competed in 17 straight USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships. His career is one of longevity and it’s so fun to watch him excel in both running and coaching.

Alice Wright PR’d in the 5K (15:45), 10K (31:56) and half marathon (1:11:38) in 2019! She is an up and coming Pro runner who runs with NAZ Elite for Hoka One One and is on her way to pursuing her marathoning dreams.

Alice is from the UK and came over to the United States to run for The University of New Mexico where she was an eight-time first team All American–four times in cross country and four times in the 10,000 meters on the track. She is the only NCAA athlete to achieve All American honors in the 10,000 meters four times.

Alice is currently side lined with an injury (was planning to debut Chicago this year). She is already halfway through her recovery from this injury and will be on the road to marathoning soon!

Enjoy my conversation with Alice!

Episode 191: Scott Smith https://lindseyhein.com/2019/07/19/episode-191-scott-smith/ Fri, 19 Jul 2019 13:52:41 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=11040 more »]]>

Scott Smith joins me on the show today- he’s a 2:12 marathoner running for Hoka One One with Northern Arizona Elite under coach Ben Rosario. Scott is funny, he’s calm natured and he’s a strong competitor who wants to win. He has a wide range of speedy times- from a 4:01 mile (he shares on the show that he wants to break 4), a 62 minute half and a 2:12 marathon.

He placed 14th at the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials – one of my favorite parts of the podcast episode is when he shares a big moment in that race that he is super proud of. Scott also ran in the monsoon of the Boston Marathon 2018 and placed 6th. He’s legit ya’ll. He literally got married like yesterday so of course I ask all kinds of wedding questions as well because, well I just can’t help myself.

Episode 180: Grayson Murphy https://lindseyhein.com/2019/05/04/auto-draft/ https://lindseyhein.com/2019/05/04/auto-draft/#comments Sat, 04 May 2019 10:02:03 +0000 https://lindseyhein.com/?p=10428 more »]]>

Grayson Murphy runs for Hoka One One NAZ Elite under coach Ben Rosario. You all know how much I love to interview the NAZ Elite crew! Grayson is new to the professional running scene, with just about one year under her belt. Though Grayson is a pro runner, she only started running five years ago. YES, five years ago. Crazy right? She was a soccer play through her freshman year of college. She walked onto the Santa Clara University cross country team and discovered she was really good at this running thing.

She finished 53rd at her first NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2016 and then finished eighth a year later at the University of Utah. It’s safe to say she has progressed fast and has huge potential in this sport; potential that Coach Ben saw when he was out recruiting (Grayson shares with us how he pursued her to join their team in this episode.) I love hearing how these parts all come together! Grayson has PRs of 3000m Steeplechase – 9:48.57 (2018), 5,000m – 15:44.45 (2017) and 10,000m – 32:28.09 (2019)

Some other things you’ll learn in this episode- she is a passionate book reader and went to school for Civil Engineering. Shealso has a desire to do a little trail running- something you don’t hear much from young pros so early in their career! And lastly, she’s an entrepreneur in her own right- she created really awesome training journals for 2019 and I loved hearing about the process that went into creating those. It’s a lot. 🙂

Grayson is open an honest about getting her head in the right space for racing and the process she’s walking through to own the mental side of racing. I really hope you love getting to know her as much as I did!

Enjoy!

Scott Fauble showed up to the start line in Hopkinton fit and ready to compete with the best in the World. He crossed the finish line in 2:09:08, placing 7th as the first American with the 11th fastest U.S. time.

Scott runs for HOKA NAZ Elite under Coach Ben Rosario and completed his third Marathon in Boston just two weeks ago. This was only his third marathon- he debuted last fall with the 12th fastest American Debut ever in 2:12:35 at the Frankfurt Marathon, then went on to race the TCS NYC Marathon last fall, placing 7th in a time of 2:12:28.

This is Scott’s third time on the podcast, so make sure you go back and check out his first two episodes – Episode 146: Scott Fable andEpisode 161: Scott Fauble and Ben Rosario.

Not only is Scott an accomplished runner, he’s the co-author of the book “Inside a Marathon” where he and his coach Ben Rosario share about his training and details going into the TCS NYC Marathon. You should totally pick up the book.

Two returning guests on the show today. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know some members of the NAZ Elite group and when Ben and Scott published their book “Inside a Marathon“, it made sense to bring them back on to chat. The cool thing about the running community is everyone is usually out to support one another and I want to see this book do really well for these guys who put so much heart into it. I love learning about their program.

You heard from Scott on this podcast fairly recently in episode 146 and Coach Ben in episode 140 – both episodes you get to know them on a deeper level, but today we talk about the NYC Marathon; where Scott placed 7th and second American running a 2:12:28! We also talk about training and how they wrote this unique and inspiring book and Scott and I might have a little race bet going for Boston in the spring.

Enjoy my conversation with Scott & Ben!

Scott Fauble joins me on the show today! Scott runs for HOKA NAZ Elite and is currently training for the TCS New York City Marathon. This will be his second marathon- he debuted last fall with the 12th fastest American Debut ever in 2:12:35 at the Frankfurt Marathon.

Scott is a Colorado native and had a standout career at Wheat Ridge High School. He was the State Cross Country Champion in 2009 and went on to finish 17th at the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships later that season. He then chose to run collegiately at the University of Portland before going Pro.

In this episode of the podcast we get to talk about Scott’s career and NYC training, but we also get to talk about anxiety and overcoming hard things. Scott has a really great perspective and outlook on the sport and life. I really enjoyed getting to know him and I think you will too!
