Esther Atkins and Peter Bromka recently wrote a piece on medium called “What is the US Olympic Trials Marathon.” I read through the article and immediately wanted to have them on the show to have a conversation with them about it.

Esther is a 3 time Olympic Trials Qualifier, she won the 2014 US Marathon Championships, placed 11th at the Olympic Trials Marathon in 2016 and has run 13 marathons under 2:40 with a personal best time of 2:33.

Peter is a 2:19 marathoner and has been super open about his journey to attempt an OTQ over these last couple of years.  He has come seconds from this goal several times and if you haven’t read his piece called “The Bubble of a Dream” GO DO IT right now!!

Both of these guests need an interview of their own on the show but for today we focused on the article and what it would look like if changes were made to the US Olympic Marathon Trials!

I hope you enjoy our conversation!! Side note – the second half of the conversation, my audio gets a bit staticky, but their audio stays fine so I hope it’s not too much of an annoyance!!

What we talked about:

4:35- Introduction to Esther Atkins

7:05- Introduction to Peter Bromka

11:40- Description of the article “What is the US Olympic Marathon Trials”

20:20- Discussion on the difference between men’s and women’s Olympic Marathon Trials standards

23:55- Thoughts on watching others qualify for the Olympic Trials and how it can inspire others and keep others in the sport

30:00- Their thoughts on what USATF is planning to do with the Olympic Trails

33:40- What a B Standard infers at the Olympic Trials

37:30- How making the standards harder could either motivate or deter people to try to run those qualifiers

42:15- If they would ever make the men’s standard slower and how that inspired Peter to write this article

46:20- If they tighten the standards, will it really affect the amount of spectators even when the elite side stays the same

52:00- Ben Rosario’s response to the article and how a better prize purse can be created for individuals

57:35- How to draw more fans into the sport

1:05:45- Final thoughts on the article since it has come out

1:12:30- How media outlets and running podcasts can help to grow the sport and give a voice to all runners

1:16:45- Peter’s written piece “The Bubble of the Dream”

Ashley Higginson is a full time lawyer and qualified for the Olympic Marathon Trials in her first marathon this past fall. Prior to this season of life- she competed professionally as a 3,000 meter steeple chaser running in both the 2012 and the 2016 Olympic Trials.
A little bit about Ashley’s backstory – she went to Princeton University  where she was a 7 time Ivy League Outdoor Champion (5k, 3k, and 3k steeple). Her junior year at Princeton, she was 3rd place at the NCAA Outdoor Track National Championships in the 3k steeple. She graduated as a two-time All-American in the steeplechase.
Ashley trained with the New Jersey-New York Track Club to train for the 2012 Olympic Trials and ended up training with them for five years. During this time she was also in law school at Rutgers University. She went on the get 4th at the 2012 Olympic Trials in the 3k steeple, missing the team by just over 2 seconds.  In 2013, Ashley made the World Championships team by getting 2nd at the USATF outdoor national championships in the steeplechase.
In 2016, Ashley finished 9th at Olympic Trials with all her hopes on making the 2016 team. She retired from professional running soon after to pursue her career as a lawyer.
In this episode Ashley and I talk about those life transitions, deciding to go Pro and then deciding to move on from it as well as what it was like to be coached by the legendary Frank Gagliano. There is much about Ashley’s story we can relate to even if most of us will never compete at the level she did!
I hope you enjoy this conversation with Ashley!

Aliphine Tuliamak won the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials in a strong race where she and Molly Siedel pulled away from a huge pack of women that stayed together for the majority of the race. Aliphine ran a time of 2:27:23, 8 seconds in front of second place finisher Molly Siedel who she worked together with over the last few miles to solidify their spots on team USA for the 2020 Olympics in Tokoyo.

This will be Aliphine’s third time on my show- so make sure you go back and listen to episode 165 where you’ll get an introduction to Aliphine and also I had the opportunity to speak with her and her teammates Steph Bruce and Kellyn Taylor two days before this race in episode 229– check that one out too! You can also see the full video of that episode on my youtube channel but if you watch or listen to nothing else, watch this short clip from before the race!

Aliphine runs for Northern Arizona Elite.  She grew up in Kenya where she would run to and from school everyday and came to the United States for college where she ran for Iowa and Witchita State.

Aliphine became in American Citizen in 2016 and went to win the USATF 25K, 5K and 20K titles – only to do it again in 2017 when she won four USATF titles in cross country, 25K, 10K and 7 miles. She has a half marathon PR of 1:09:49 and marathon PR of 2:26:50.

In this episode of the podcast we get to hear all about the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials – how she felt morning of, during and what she did to celebrate… and so much more!

Julia Kohnen placed 10th at the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta! An unsponsored athlete who works full time at the Panera Bread Corporate offices, Julia trains 100-110 mile weeks and keeps surprising herself in the marathon. The Olympic Trials was only her 5th marathon and she ran a 1.5 minute PR.

Perhaps the craziest part of this story is that Julia didn’t start competitively running until 5 years ago when she was pursuing her masters at the University of Southern Indiana and the Cross Country Coach encouraged her to join the team. Having played soccer for all four years of her undergrad she didn’t think she had eligibility, but since it was a different sport she was able to compete.

She ran her first marathon in 2:47 and has knocked that time down at each attempt to her now PR of 2:30:43.  Fun fact- she also got engaged right after the race!

In this episode you will hear about her progression of running as well as race details from Atlanta. This woman has so much ahead of her in her career and I can’t wait to see what she does!!
