Kellyn Taylor joins me on the show today to talk about her huge PR and course record at Grandma’s Marathon. Kellyn ran a 2:24:28, shattering the course record by 2 minutes, taking 4 minutes off her PR of 2:28 and becoming the 7th fastest American Woman in the marathon of all time.  She bounced back to run this race, just 8 weeks after a DNF at the Boston Marathon due to hypothermia.

Kellyn is a Mother, a Wife, a Certified Firefighter and runs professionally for NAZ Elite and Hoka One One under coach Ben Rosario. She has been training her butt off for years for a day like she had at Grandma’s. Kellyn has a long list of huge accomplishments, like finishing 6th at the Olympic Marathon Trails and 4th in the 10K Marathon Trials in 2016. Kellyn has big hopes and dreams for the 2020 trials and I do believe this 2:24 puts her in the game more than she already was.

Naomi is a news anchor for the Indianapolis NBC affiliate -Channel 13-WTHR. She graduated from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and has since worked for several news stations around the country until recently landing here in her hometown of Indianapolis. Naomi and I met when she came out to my house to cover a story on me when I was on the cover of Women’s Running Magazine.  We have kept in touch since the interview and she is one of the sweetest, most genuine people you’ll meet.

In this episode, we go all over the place, from career to health, to on-line dating. Naomi and I both have the BRCA gene mutation putting us at a high risk for breast and ovarian cancer, so we talk about our experiences and choices in dealing with that. We also talk about the tragic lose of her father and how she coped and still copes with that. Though Naomi hates the term “foodie”, she is all over the food scene and dishes on her favorite restaurants.

I felt like we could have talked for hours– enjoy this conversation with Naomi!

My legs were feeling beat up this week. I haven’t done a bit of speed work since Sam Costa. My body was just not wanting it. Coming off some hard running going into the half marathon and then my highest mileage week last week (46 Mi), I needed to chill this week. So I did.

04/03/17-04/09/17

Monday: 5.3 with single stroller 8:53/Mi – with the whole family, Glenn on double. We got caught in the rain big time.

Tuesday: Rest – I hadn’t really planned on resting, but had a podcast interview and Glenn had to work late and he was out running early morning, so my only option really would have been 9pm at the gym. Yeah, no.

Wednesday: 8 Mi Easy 8:45/Mi – Morning monon Solo

Thursday: 3.4 Mi 8:55/Mi + Strength – Evening at the gym on treadmill

Friday: 3.2 Mi 9:15/Mi – Afternoon on the monon solo

Saturday: Rest + Massage

Sunday: 10 Mi, 6 easy,  4 progress: 8:39, 8:23, 8:25, 8:22, 8:19, 8:17, 7:45, 7:33, 7:13, 6:47  – This run felt good. I wasn’t totally planning on doing a progression at the end, but felt good and I hadn’t turned the legs over in awhile, so wanted to see how it felt. I worked pretty hard for that last mile.

I could really tell the massage was helpful. I was a little leary of the massage because I was using a gift card from massage envy my sister had got my for Christmas. I just wasn’t sure if the person they put me with would really understand what I needed done, but he was great and really worked on my IT Band and my achilles.

Total Miles: 30 Mi

My most recent podcast episode with Teal Burrell who went from a 4 hour marathon to an Olympic Qualifying time of 2:42 has me inspired to work hard and chase big dreams. That means working hard, but that also means chilling out when I need to chill out. No injuries please!

What I’m loving right now:

Shoe Dog , Phil Knight – I’m about halfway done and loving this book. It is so interesting to hear how Phil (the creator of Nike) got started. Highly Recommend

GTS Kombucha  – I’ve tried several different brands of kombucha, but this has been my favorite and I’m finally hooked. I’ve tried to get into it a few times and never have until now. I’m hooked. I’m gonna look into making some on my own though because it’s pretty pricey.

The Tim Ferris Show Podcast  – I just love hearing from all the people he interviews. Very entrepreneurial focused, but not all. He is a little cocky but it doesn’t really bother me. One of my favorite episodes of his so far is with comedian Jerrod Carmichael

That’s all I got for you guys. Have a great Sunday- enjoy the week ahead!

When I heard it was going to be 70 degrees on Monday I was plotting and scheming for days to try to get Glenn to take the day off work. He was sick all last week with a fever. (Same fever I had two weeks before) and the week was just Blah.

My Dad recently bought a little cabin out in the Hoosier National and there are awesome trails to run literally right out the front door. So we took the kids down for the day and one of my sisters and her family came out. The kids played all day, we even took them on a little hike- probably about a mile and a half, and they all did great.

My mom agreed to watch our boys so Glenn and I could head out for a run for an hour and it felt so great. The best word I can find to describe running through those woods with no children in site is FREEDOM. I was seriously so happy running on those trails. All day I was riding some high. Can we just all feel like that everyday? We’re hoping to make this a regular thing over the summer.

Straight up huffing and puffing up those hills:

Picture below taken courtesy of Marshall.

I had a pretty great week of running and workouts last week. Probably my most solid week since I had Russ. The sinus infection I recently had put me out from doing anything for 10 days. 10 days. Like, what? I finally ended up at the Doctor and had to get an antibiotic to kick it to the curb.

Here’s what last week looked like:

Monday: 5 Mi Easy outside with friends

Tuesday: 6 Mi Total on TM with 3 X 1 Mi @ 6:45-6:50, quarter mile walk/jog between. Felt strong.

Wednesday: 6.5 Mi Easy on some rolling TM hills

Thursday: 45 Min Spin Class

Friday: 11 Miles Outside (8 easy, 3 @ a tempo effort… which landed me at 8:00, 8:00, 7:40) That effort felt much harder than the times were telling me. What can you do. (Answer is: Keep Working)

Saturday: 1250 swim. (with 5 X 50 meters hard in the middle.) I’m a weenie… I should have done two sets of that.

Sunday: 5.5 miles with the whole family. I pushed Louis in the single stroller

And now Glenn wants me to pick out a race- some 5Ks to test my fitness. Oh man, I’m not sure I’m ready for that. I do think this week I will give myself a trial 5K on my own though. I’m guessing I’ll be able to go out around 7:00 pace and knock it down to 6:40, we’ll see what I can hang on to though. I’ll likely just do it on the treadmill for some speed work this week. I’m guessing it will be tomorrow. I’m still a little sore from the trails and the plyometric lunges I did on Monday. I think we have decided I will focus on running a strong Mini Marathon though. Doubt it will be a PR, but looking for a solid race!

I do know one thing though- I want to race like Shelby Houlihan this year. (Maybe not as fast as her though….) She inspired me a lot on her podcast episode when she talked about being excited to race and rather than being nervous, enjoying the benefits of the hard work she put in all season!

GIVEAWAY WINNER:

I celebrated my 50th episode of the podcast with a fun giveaway with NOW Foods, Erica Sara Designs & Good Luck Box! Since the rafflecopter giveaway was only allowing me to add entries of people who were on twitter- I added an Instagram piece to it. To make it fair so that every entry was included- I put all of the rafflecopter entries AND all of the IG entries and a spreadsheet and picked it at random.

Who wants to hear who the winner is?

Congratulations:

I’ll Have Another Podcast Episode 44: Glenn Hein

This is a unique episode. Since it’s Christmas time and my husband Glenn has a good amount of time off work these two weeks, we decided it would be a great time to record an episode with him!

Glenn works in finance at Covance Central Labs during the week and shuts that off the second he gets home and is an amazing Dad to our three boys. He is an athlete, he loves to cook (which we fail to talk about in this episode), one of my favorite things about him is his positive and easy going personality.

In this episode we talk about how we met, which takes up a good part of the first half of the episode. I talk a lot ok? We also talk about how he went from non-runner to marathon runner to taking an hour off his marathon time to completing four Ultras, including a 100K.

We had fun recording, though there were many kid distractions- which I hope didn’t effect the episode too much. Though he’s had the week off, it was kind of a hectic week around here with kids getting sick and running the show. I hope to record more with him in the future- please enjoy and let me know what you think on social media!

You can find me on instagram at LindseyHein626, on twitter @LindseyHein and on Facebook! You can also find Glenn on twitter @ghein83.

Last week Russell crossed over the one month mark. I don’t have a cute sticker picture or any specific picture on that particular day, but I do know that his hair is still better than my own hair and probably your hair too. I’m terrible at baby books and all that kind of mom stuff, but I figured if I wrote some stuff on here, I could look back on it later and I’ll be glad I have the records.

We’ll hit 6 weeks on Thursday – which is always the time when people tell you you hit a turning point. Things settle down a bit, it’s still really hard because everyone’s tired but you find some sort of rhythm in the chaos. At least that was so for the first two.

At 6 weeks post delivery, I’m starting to feel like myself a bit more and excited to start working out again. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still feeling the hormone crazies a fair amount, but I’m feeling a little less hazy. I’m a stickler of waiting the full 6 weeks to start running again after babies and surgeries, but I think more than anything for the reason that I enjoy the downtime. I enjoy it enough to totally celebrate it, but I miss running/exercise enough that I welcome it back with open arms. I started taking Louis to the Y when he was only 6 weeks old but am not sure I’ll go down that road so soon with Russ. He already had a cold at three weeks and it was miserably for all parties. The Y never got Lou sick though so who knows, maybe I’ll roll the dice. Momma is much happier with her workout time.

russiu

At one month. He’s up an down all night long, eating three different people’s breast milk like a champ- though the weird thing about giving your kid other peoples breast milk is that you have no idea what that person might have ate on a particular day and if it’s upsetting his tummy at all. We have about 4 more weeks of breast milk left for him and I’ll likely start incorporating some formula with it soon. What a gift these women have donated to our baby boy.

His brothers adore him and at this point we all kind of think he looks more like Marshall/Me rather than Louis/Glenn. (Everyone says Marshall looks like me and Louis looks like Glenn) Though he seems to maybe have Glenn’s nose so maybe he’ll be a Marshall/Louis hybrid.

That’s all I got.

I’ve been so excited to get this episode out for over a month now! Ali and I recorded this 5 weeks and I’ve been saving it up! Ali is a freelance writer and she contributes to all kinds of awesome magazines, including Women’s Running, Self, Shape, The Daily Burn and more. In this episode we talk about her career path- how she landed her dream job at Dance Spirit Magazine and how she transitioned into the freelance world. We also talk about Ali’s battle with Crohn’s disease and the fact that we are hero’s for rescuing our dogs,  Instagram stories, The NYC Marathon, Celine Dion and well just some fun girl talk.  Ali is hilarious and you will all want to be best friends with her after this chat. Oh and we recorded this BEFORE the NYC marathon when Ali didn’t know if she’d be able to run it or not and HOORAY she was able to and had a great day! So happy about that. This is a longer episode – save it for a long run!!
