Denise McMillan joins me on the show today. She has a unique story in that she didn’t become a runner until the age of 49 after overcoming Breast Cancer. Just five years later, she has run three marathons and created friendships that will last a lifetime. Denise talks about how the friendship side running might in fact be the most meaningful part to her. Denise has two daughters and one granddaughter and works in marketing.

I met Denise a few years ago and instantly connected to her positive nature and really funny personality. I knew I wanted to have her on the show right from the start and I’m so excited that we have finally made this happen. In the episode, we talk about her life growing up in New Zealand, getting married really young and getting through a lonely time during her divorce. We also talk about walking through Breast Cancer and coming out on the other side and finding so much freedom in running. I know many people will relate to different pieces of Denise’ story and you will take something with you from this conversation.

Enjoy!

Donna Deegan is the Founder of the Donna Marathon in Jacksonville, Florida. She is the mother of two and a three-time survivor of breast cancer. In 1999, she began her battle, with recurrences in 2002 and 2007. She is the founder of The Donna Foundation, which provides the necessary funds to care for local women living with breast cancer. They are doing incredible things at the Donna Foundation and you’ll get to hear all about that in this episode. Donna is the author of two books and a former weekday television anchor on First Coast News at WTLV/WJXX.

In this episode of the podcast, we talk about the Donna Marathon (I’m running it in February – can’t wait!), but the biggest portion of this conversation is focused on the power of positive thinking and actively working toward living a life full of gratitude everyday. There were so many times in the episode that I wanted to just stop and take notes. It’s one of the messages that reinforces what’s really important in life.

So the question you’ll walk away asking yourself is “What are you going to do about living?”

If you enjoy this episode, I would appreciate it so much if you’d share it with anyone who you think might also enjoy it!  And come run the Donna Marathon with me! (Use the code “Lindsey15” to get 15% off!)

I’ll Have Another Podcast Episode 53: Erin Blinn-Curran

Erin Curran-Blinn is a talented photographer, a marathon runner, a wife and a sister. And when I say a sister, I mean this woman has 12 siblings! I met Erin through this podcast last fall. She reached out to me about coaching and ended up taking family pictures for my family this past December. So she’s met all my crazies! Erin was diagnosed with breast cancer a little over a year ago and after undergoing radiation and recovering from surgery, she saddled up and decided to train for a marathon, completing the Houston marathon just one year after her cancer diagnosis… and only a few minutes shy of her second Boston Qualifier on a hot and humid day.

In this episode, we talk about growing up with such a big family, walking through her cancer diagnosis in her first year of marriage and what her diagnosis and treatment means for starting a family of her own someday. We get honest about the reality of infertility and holding on to hope, while also being at peace with what happens in your life either way. Such a good conversation with this brave and honest woman. She also has some great recommendation for social media accounts to follow and what she’s loving these days!
