Not knowing when this sucker is going to heal might be the hardest part about not running. I can’t make a plan because I don’t know when it will be better. The Doctor says probably 6-8 weeks, but who really knows. I’ll be able to feel it when it’s ready. I know that even if they say 6-8 weeks, if it doesn’t feel right at that time, I’m still out. I honestly feel like nobody knows anything about how long it will take each individual person to heal from PF issues. It’s a stupid injury.

SAUCONY

Yesterday I tried on some new tights at Athletic Annex- came out of the dressing room barefoot and the talk was my rigid feet. My stupid high arches. And everything I need to do to make my feet better. I blame these feet on my Dad, I don’t know where he got them from but they are identical to his. Even on my left foot, I step out of bed in the morning and it’s not plantar fasciitis, but my feet just ache. I’m hobble down the stairs every morning.

I’ll be heading back to St. Vincent Sports Performance sometime in the next couple of weeks. I am going to work with Brian Schuetter for Physical Therapy and strength to get this foot healthy once it’s ready.

I’m trying to get in the pool 3 times a week and bike once or twice. In reality, I’m working out probably 4 times a week, 5 tops. My preference is 6-7 but when I’m not running, not so much. It’s fine. As much as I am still a little grumpy sometimes about the lack of endorphins, I really am still enjoying downtime. Today, I woke up at 5:30 and thought I should go swim now so I can get home before Glenn has to leave for work, but then pictured myself sitting on the couch downstairs, drinking coffee, reading a little, then watching the news and catching on up some email and a quick blog. That sounded a lot better than swimming at 5:30am. I’m taking the boys to the Y for childcare later, but to get some work done rather than a workout. If Glenn gets home from work at a decent time, I might sneak in a swim tonight, but we’ll see.

I’m trying to read more. I just finished Jen Hatmaker’s new book “For the Love”- it was cute and now I want to start my own supper club. Now I’m reading Amy Poehler’s book “Yes, Please” and Jen Hatmaker’s book “Seven”and am still in the middle of a random Diane chamberlain book, that I’m not super interested in but will eventually finish. (part of the lighthouse series… just a fun read)

I’m excited for Chicago Marathon next weekend- I’ll have a little sense of Blah since I can’t run with Olivia, my Saucony 26 strong cadet– but regardless the weekend with all of these ladies is going to be blast.

I also booked a trip to Austin for the first weekend in December with some of the Team Film ladies + Jana. I’ve never been to Austin and will be a fun get away. A little nervous that Leann won’t let me sleep, not sure I can keep up with some of this crew. I really like sleep.

Glenn says he’s banking a lot of time of “get away” time with all my trips going on, I keep telling him to make some plans! Someone go on a man trip with this guy so he doesn’t have this hanging over my head please! His only requirement is that you have to go run with him during the trip. Trails are probably a must.

In the kid department. Man, three is so hard. And kids are gross. That’s all I have the energy to say about that.

These boys. This picture pretty much sums them up.

SUPERMAN

Marshall. This is when it’s peaceful and he is the sweetest boy ever. Can someone come over and cut his hair?

UNDERWA

Then there is this. On the Regular. This was kroger on Monday- don’t get me started with the scene we caused at Good Earth.

floor

And hey there Big Lou. Sigh. Thank you for being happy, content and keeping me sane.

lout

Oh, also, yesterday at pre school Marshall was snoozing hard when I came to pick him up. Lights were on all the parents were picking up and my guy was just snoozing. I didn’t want to wake him, so Lou and I just waited him out. I couldn’t stop laughing about the scene, it was hilarious and precious all at the same time. Big Lou just all over the place and Marshall had in his sleep. The video is sideways, but whatever.

What’s your favorite book right now?

You’ve got one more day to enter the Women’s Running Cover Runner Contest.

  • Submissions are closed tomorrow September 28th
  • Don’t be shy to nominate yourself!
  • Nominate a friend who you know won’t submit but you know deserves it!
  • It really takes 30 minutes to apply. Just know what you want to say and speak from your heart.

Last year when I applied, I was nervous because I felt a little silly writing about myself like that. I knew what I wanted to say though and it just came out. Then, once I was selected for the top 9, I was nervous about recruiting votes. BUT Glenn encouraged me to just own it and go all in. People were super supportive and no one make me feel like I didn’t belong in that position. It was so cool to see my community of friends and family get behind me. (Indianapolis rocks by the way, our city was all about it! Several news stations and radio shows picked it up. Our “little” BIG city is really great and the running community specifically is like none other.

Here is the post I wrote about Last year’s cover. And even better- here is the article that Caitlyn wrote. Caitlyn was so fun to work with- for the actual interview, we simply sat down for a couple of hours and just talked about my story and what running has meant to me over the past 15 years, specifically that last year. My “Find your strong moment”. The rest of the Women’s Running crew was amazing to work with too- Jessie, Erin, Nicki- all so great and was so fun getting to know them.

Here are some pictures from the cover shoot last year:

I had no idea what I was doing. I was 13 weeks pregnant with my second baby, so naturally was super tired and felt blah, but this crew helped me feel confident and beautiful. And provided coffee and good music. (Big Lou liked the coffee guys. I don’t think the two of us would have survived an all day photo shoot without it. )

I’ve also been able to develop a great relationship with Saucony which started with the contest as they were the sponsor last year. I am now a coach for the Saucony 26 Strong project and have had a great experience with that. (It’s a different sponsor this year for the contest, but still sure to be a great experience, I assume!)

HOLDING MAG

Thanks again to everyone who got behind me last year! Can’t wait to see who the top 9 will be this year!

SO this post is me encouraging YOU to just apply. WHY NOT? Stop what you’re doing and take 30 minutes to do it. Just speak from your heart and the words will come.

Apply TODAY.

Yesterday I gave myself a goal to post on this blog everyday this week. I think I was drunk because that’s a big goal. I think I can do better at blogging though. A lot of times I’ve rolled my eyes at the “blogger mentality” or whatever you want to call it… because like who cares right? But people do care and it’s fun. Well some people care.  and I enjoy writing. It’s therapeutic for me. So thank you for at least acting interested, because this is cheaper than real therapy. Thank you for following along.

This morning I skipped the gym. My normal routine on Tuesdays and Thursdays is take Marshall to preschool at 9am, drop Lou off at YMCA child watch and either go to a meeting or two and then workout or the other way around. If you do the Y childcare just right you can squeeze in 4 hours. (2 paid – but at $5 an hour, you can’t argue with that.) You get 2 free hours of childcare with your Y membership as long as you are there working out or running on the monon. You only have to pay $5 per kid if you actually need to leave and can use them as a babysitting service. AMAZING. It’s not as amazing if both kids are there since it’s $5 per kid, but still just as good as any babysitting cost. So I take advantage of Marshall being at perschool and utilize the Y for Lou. Strategy. I’ll get a little work done and a workout in in those four hours. Then Lou and I usually have and hour to kill before picking up Marshall.

BUT TODAY. I woke up, hadn’t slept well and JUST WANTED TO BE HOME. So Lou and I came on home. I’ve vacuumed, updated some work related things, passively watched the Today Show, played with my baby, napped my baby, did laundry, thought about prepping something for dinner, thought about making granola (didn’t have rolled oats), reassembled the carseat after washing the cloth part. (took me longer than one would think and I’ve now washed four times between our three car seats in two days) Kids are gross. I also had a phone call about a new video series I’m doing with my friend Chris at Inside Endurance Sports. (more details on that soon). When I have these hours to myself, my mind runs wild on all the things I want to do. All the possibilities of what could happen during that time. And I get nervous, I don’t want to waste one single minute of it. So if I find myself texting or doing anything not satisfying, my mind just thinks about how quickly that darn time is ticking.  (I had Lou, but he was down for an hour and a half and he’s pretty easy… at least he isn’t throwing temper tantrums yet)

After Lou and I picked Marshall up from pre-school, we headed to Annex Broad Ripple and walked to kroger, stared at the ducks and got a snack at Public Greens. (Fried green tomatoes & toast with almond butter, pears and goat cheese and a fancy juice) I need to stop being so obsessed with Public Greens. It’s becoming a habit that is too expensive to be so regular. 🙂 BUT IT’S SOOOO GOOD.

Even though we didn’t get home until 4:30, somehow that last hour of the day was hectic and crazy with Marshall. So when Glenn got home I was out the door to the gym. Went with the intention to swim, but another kid had an accident and the pull was closed. Can we rally for an adult only pool?! So I biked and rowed super slothy like and listened to Runners Connect with Tina.

Marshall just came downstairs and told me he doesn’t know how to fall asleep. Oh I feel you boy. I feel you. I tried to teach him deep breathiing techniques and promised I’d check back in 20 minutes. Oh boy.

Tomorrow we have our 5th week of stroller group I started up at Athletic Annex- and it’s going really well!  We had 10 ladies come out with their kids last week. There were like 20 kids and all were boys but one.  I think this will be our biggest week yet with the weather being so perfect!

If you know any stay at home, work from home or moms with flexible schedules- send them my way. We meet every Wednesday at Athletic Annex Broad Ripple (6528 Cornell Ave.) at 10am. We do a 30 minute run or walk, followed up with Rene’s Bakery goodies, coffee and playtime for the kids. It’s good. Just come.

Today felt like progress. I anticipated I’d run somewhere between 1:35-1:37 and I ran a 1:36:08. I wanted to run 20 miles for the day for my last long training run for Boston, so we warmed up 3.5, ran the race and cooled down 3.5. Correct, this is a much more fun way to get in 20 miles. Makes the 20 more interesting and fun.

The Hoosier Half Marathon is a very hilly course. Elevation for this race was 760 feet…. now that Glenn is all fancy with the Garmin he bought from Marathon Dan, we know these kinds of things from the watch. Hilly course or not, I’m in no shape to try to PR and today my intentions were to run strong, run smart and have a good time working hard. I can honestly say, GOALS accomplished. I was working, no doubt, but I was smiling through most of the race. There was no moment in this race where I felt defeated. Even though my time was much slower, I felt a lot stronger than I did at Indy Women’s Half…. and happier for that matter. (I always underestimate the heat we had that day, not to mention, I was just off) I went into this race with only two very short tempo runs since January (one in February, when I promptly aggravated my hamstring and then one this week) and absolutely no speed work other than that. Just very easy miles (mostly around 8-8:30pace) and a decent amount of time biking compared to my norm.

My mile splits are below- they are kind of weird, since the course is so hilly. Mile 9 for instance, is up Winslow hill, it’s a short hill compared to the the Jordan extension on Mile 4, but it’s steep and I was moving slow. It’s easy to get discouraged on the big hills, because you’re huffin’ and puffin’ and feel like your crawling, but I kept telling myself to “just do me” and not worry about who was passing or anything at all, just get to the top and roll. I would usually be passed by a couple of guys up the hill and then I’d roll past them on the downhill. I’m a good downhill runner?  I would literally smile at the top of every hill and even as I was climbing them I was smiling. There weren’t a ton of spectators on the course, but they were probably wondering why I was so happy to be struggling up a hill.

My Splits:

Mile 1- 7:07

Mile 2- 7:05

Mile 3- 7:23

Mile 4- 7:30 – Long uphill

Mile 5- 6:50 – Long downhill

Mile 6- 7:18

Mile 7- 7:05

Mile 8- 6:55 – downhill

Mile 9- 7:42 – Steep uphill

Mile 10- 7:29

Mile 11- 7:26

Mile 12- 7:28

Mile 13- 7:25

Glenn finished way ahead of me and took a couple of pictures. I love the one below because it is truly a picture of how I felt the whole race. I seriously felt like I was smiling the whole time. There was no pressure here, just wanted to work. I looked at my watch only one time during the whole race and that was at mile 1. I kept it under my arm warmers from then on and never checked back. I had a pretty good feeling what I was running though and since time didn’t matter, I decided there was no need to look.

Glenn had a great race. He is also coming off a bit of a baby injury (had some achilles stuff going on) and took some time off but has been slowly adding in some speed work and building miles. He didn’t decide if he was going to run hard until about a quarter mile into the race.  We started together and he slowly just drifted away from me after about 2 minutes, I just said “well, see ya!.” Going into the race, he was thinking of just running with me, we also contemplated just running the pace he’s pacing for the Carmel Marathon next weekend (around 7:25 pace, which was pretty close to what I actually ran) BUT, when we registered the night before the race and it was $70 an entry, I told him he should just race so we could get our money worth. He ended up running 1:22:30, which is 4 minutes off his PR, but a PR he ran in better shape, on a very flat course. He was very happy with the time & effort (his splits are amazing) and it gave him a good idea of where he really is. Yay! (I’ll make him write a race report soon…)

We could both definitely tell we’ve been doing some runs in Bloomington, while I wasn’t super speedy up the hills, I felt ok, whereas normally I would have been dying up the hills. Glenn dominated them. He has always been pretty strong on hills. I think it has a lot to do with being willing to hurt more than most people. We’ve both decided that we like a hilly course. Breaks it up and in my head the miles go by faster because of all the change. The miles in this race ticked up so quick. They might slow your time down sometimes, but it’s really fun to run down them. 🙂

photo (9)

photo (8)

After I saw Glenn with about a half mile to go, I realized there was a girl pretty close in front of me and immediately thought, wait Lindsey what are you doing, there’s no reason to not go pass that chick. So I passed her and with that last 200 meters running pretty hard, with that last 100 being up a gross hill. I guess it put me over the edge because I immediately threw up when I crossed the finish line. I don’t think that would have happened if I wasn’t pushing that last bit in. P

I placed 19/493 for women and 3/121 in my age group. It was a good day. Hopefully Glenn will write up his race report soon. 🙂

Do you ever feel like your victory races aren’t neccesarily on PR days?

How do you do on hills? Love them, hate them? Love to hate them?

Today I woke up wanting to run. Most days it takes a good 2 hours before I even want to think about running. I’m not the best morning person. Today I was feeling motivated and encouraged, which was good news because yesterday I was in a funk the first part of the day and sat on the bike all grumpy for an hour with no motivation to work hard. It took all I had just to make it past 30 minutes and somehow I convinced myself to say on until 45 then 60. Little bits at a time usually does the trick. Just motivation to sweat so that I could better my mood really.

So today I warmed up 15 minutes, ran 30 minutes hardish and cooled down for 40 minutes. I started out the 30 minutes at 6:53 pace and realized it was too fast 5 minutes in. Bummer. But I quickly reminded myself, you can’t jump right back to where you were. I took it down two notches to 7:03 and held that until the last 10 minutes where I sped up to 6:58 and then back to 6:53 for the last 5 minutes. It felt good. The effort was there but it wasn’t out of control. Lot’s of smiles, deep breaths, good music, some singing (hopefully just mouthing words) & a good book. If I was doing an interval workout, I wouldn’t read during my on sets, but this pace was controlled enough that I was able to read. I’m reading Rob Lowe’s book – Stories I only tell my friends, it’s pretty good. Don’t ask me why I’m reading it, picked it out to be a mindless entertaining read and it’s doing the job. Pretty interesting too- he was one driven kid trying to break into acting.

As I was running and throughly enjoying the endorphins the hard work was providing me, I thought a lot about being content where I am right now. Stop comparing things to where I was, where I want to be and to whatever everyone else is doing. I think this is something we need to wake up every morning and remind ourselves of depending on our circumstances. Back in December, I was running 10 mile days 4 days a week and was loving it. Now is not the time for it. One 10 mile day plus a long run with some shorties mixed in is where I’m at this week and that’s just fine.

I think I’ll run the Hoosier Half this weekend– I want to get 20 miles in on Saturday and I’ll sandwich the race in between the 20. I’ll push myself during the race, but I’m not sure what that will produce and honestly it doesn’t matter. I’m just going to be in the moment. Enjoy it for what it is, no thinking about what I could be doing or have the potential to do. I am where I am NOW. Working hard feels good no matter where your current shape is.

So completely irrelevant to the running, I thought I throw in some of my favorite pics from this past week:

Family pic at my parents house. I wanted to take a picture since we were wearing clothes that weren’t workout clothes. We had a major fail trying to get Marshall in the picture, so just let him do his thing and it turned out pretty good anyway:

photo (2)

Marshal and Cadence. Besties, or so Marshall thinks:

photo (6)

Twins and let’s just note that this kid ALWAYS has a ball in hand:

photo (5)

And this is one I love. The neighbor kids who I mentioned in my last post came over yesterday and played basketball in the front yard, while I enjoyed the sun & although they didn’t realize it, they were highly entertaining to Marshall and gave me a nice break. Gonna miss this house and neighborhood.

That’s all!

What do you do to stay content right where you are?

What’s your favorite part of a hard run? (My answer: Endorphins)

Hey it’s Sunday and I am on top of things this week. Working on my training log early. We are in Bloomington right now visiting Lindsey’s mom, Lori, who had knee surgery this week. Have you seen her knee? Look at my twitter if you want to see it. I won’t put it in your face on the blog. It is intense.

Another good week. Lots of snow and cold again so lots of treadmill running for me. I mainly go to the treadmill out of ease of use. It is a lot easier to get my work on the mill as opposed to layering up and dealing with crap conditions sometimes. I know I could run outside a lot more then I do but I’ve been lazy with it by taking the easy way out. I don’t mind it and I don’t have to worry about ice or anything when doing my workouts. I think there are advantages to both the treadmill and to ‘manning up’ and going outside but either way at the end of the day the work needs to get done so do it, whatever it takes.

Don’t let the weather, the treadmill, getting up early, or whatever it is stand in your way of working toward your goal. Enough about winter running and the treadmill.

Here is my log:

Week 5 – Feb 3rd – 9th

71.54 Miles
8 Runs
2/3 Workouts

Monday – 5

Recovery 5.  Easy 40 minutes of running to shake out the weekend. Feeling good with running everyday lately so I use Monday as a fake rest day and run super easy.

Tuesday (Another big snow storm) – 12.5

Morning
8.54 Miles
7:01 Pace
Easy running with some pickups the last 2.5 miles. Finished at about 5:40 or so. I am really enjoying this type of run lately. Little bit of stress but not too much.

Afternoon
Easy 4 around 8:00 pace. Another week of adding a secondary run.

Wednesday (Stupid Cold Out) – 10 Miles
7:13 Pace
Easy run with some hills thrown in for fun.

Thursday (Stupid Cold Again) – 10 Miles
6:49 Pace

3 mile warm up
6 miles Wave Tempo – 6:27,6:07,6:27,5:56,6:27,5:49
1 mile cool down
I am a big fan of the Wave tempo workout. The alternating pace provides a nice stressor especially with having to “recover” at a quicker pace in between those LT miles.
Good workout.
I wanted to do a secondary run after this workout but the day didn’t work out that way.

Friday  – 6 Miles
7:49 Pace
Recovery day following yesterday’s workout and the lack of the secondary run to excelerate the recovery process.

Saturday – 18 Miles
7:12 Pace
It was finally warm enough to have a decent run outside but Lindsey convinced me to go to the gym with her and Marshall so I ran on the treadmill. Pretty standard long run. I am sure people were wondering what I was doing on the treadmill for 2 hours.

Marshall stranded at kids club for the full two hour limit they allow.  Awesome track suit, compliments of Simon.
Sunday – 10 Miles
7:08 Pace
A good Bloomington hill run with a progressive up tempo finish. I had been kind of slacking on hill work recently so it felt good to run strong on the hills. I need to make sure to maximize my hill time in order to be ready for Mohican.

Next week looks to be more of the same for me. I am trying to figure out the next couple of weeks right now. I am pretty early into my cycle so I don’t want to push too hard too soon so I am thinking that I will run 75 miles or so the next two weeks and then cut things back at the end of Feb a bit to really absorb all the stress and then ramp up again a little more in March. I am taking this cycle slowly and am trying not to over do things. Feeling good so far.

And just because- here’s a creepy “My Buddy” doll we found in the closet at Lindsey’s parents house last night: (His sister came out today and she looked to have some vacation braids in her hair) Marshall is obsessed with this thing.

You remember My Buddy right?!

How is your running going? Any races coming up?  I’d like to race soon.

Did you have a “My Buddy”? Were they this creepy when we were kids?

Another week of running. Another training log blog. Recording this helps me process through how I am feeling, what worked, what didn’t, new things to try, etc. I figured out today that I have ran for 30 straight days. I kind of like it. My body feels good.

The last two Mondays I have used them as pseudo rest days and run super easy for like 30 or 40 minutes. I am not trying to “run streak” or anything like that but I’ve found this to be working for me right now.

Here’s my log from Week 4:

Week 4 – Jan 27th – Feb 2nd

8 runs
68 Miles
2 Workouts

Monday – 4 miles

Recovery day from the prior weekend. I drove up from Bloomington that morning so I didn’t run until 6:30 or so. Felt really tired because of it. I almost never run at night. 7:45 pace.

Tuesday – 10 Miles – 7:11 pace.

Easy run with a pickup the last two miles. I am enjoying this type of run. I start out nice and easy for a couple of miles and then progress the pace to where I am at AT and faster for the last mile or two. I think it provides a nice little stress without overly taxing your body. It was stupid cold out again, like -40*F wind chill. Went back to Bloomington to get Lindsey and Marshall after staying in Indy Monday night.

Wednesday – 8 Miles – 7:22 pace.

Easy run. Traveling the state continues. I took Lindsey and Marshall to Crown Point today so she could recover and I could work. It would almost be easier if Lindsey worked outside of the house because I could just take Marshall to day care and we could stay in Indy but thankfully all the surgery stuff is essentially behind us. Came back to Indy Wednesday night.

Thursday – 11 Miles
2 Runs.

First run was the workout for the day:

8 Miles.
6:49 pace.
2 Mile warmup.
5 mile tempo run in 30:40 – 6:30, 6:17. 6:07, 6:00,5:46
1 Mile cooldown
Good effort. I really enjoy progressive type runs. Too often people hammer from the gun and then struggle.

Second run

3 miles

Easy run with the dog. 8:15 pace or so. This is the first week that I have added a secondary run into my weekly load. I did it for a couple weeks in the fall. I plan on adding some more secondary runs throughout this cycle until I get to 10-12 runs a week.

Friday – 10 Miles

Easy run 7:27 pace. Got to run outside for this one since the snow had been cleared and it was not stupid cold. See my log from last week for my thoughts on winter running and the treadmill. Basically…get over it!

Saturday – 15 Miles

Back in Crown Point for this one. I came up Friday night after work. CP got a big storm Friday night into Saturday which made running outside not a very good option so I took to my parents treadmill.
Nice long run. 7:10 pace. Spotify and @iRunFar coverage of Rocky Raccoon and Sean O’Brien ultras got me through.

We then celebrated my Dad’s 63rd birthday. The joke was it was like his 7th birthday party of the week…he had at least 3 for real though. If cake is present it is a party in my book.

The original Hein Family plus the new ones. My Dad’s 63rd birthday.

Sunday – 10 Miles

6 @ 7:30 with increasing pace over the last four. Moved from 7:30 to 5:50 over the last four. Pretty standard FF run following a long run for the Mohican cycle.

We then came back to Indy and went to a Super Bowl party with some friends. What a terrible game…but I’m glad the Seahawks won.

Super Bowl parties look like this now.

In the last week, I have drove from Indy to Bloomington, back to Indy, back to Bloomington, back to Indy, to Crown Point, to Indy, to Crown Point again and finally back to Indy.

Happy to be home this week and that Lindsey is back on the road to recovery and the surgeries are behind us.

This week will again be around 70 miles with one or two secondary runs…probably two. I’ll hold that for a couple of weeks to make sure I can handle it along with the miles before bumping up again.

Who is over winter like this guy? Favorite workouts of the moment?

Hi.

Another good week of training. The winter has been grinding on in Indy this year. It is one of the coldest and snowiest January’s on record. This has meant a lot of treadmill miles for me lately. It is hard to get in quality runs when it is just really shitty outside. I don’t mind running in the cold but sometimes it is just too cold or too snow covered to get anything of quality out of the run…so I go to the treadmill.

Week 3

7 Runs
62 Miles
2 workouts

Monday – 6 Miles
7:53 pace. Nice and easy recovery from the weekend.

Tuesday –  9 Miles
7:26 pace. Nice and easy run on the treadmill. Shirtless. In the living room. Big fan.

Wednesday – 7 Miles
7:34 pace. Easy run. Cut the distance a bit from lack of energy dealing with a head cold.

Thursday – 7.25 Miles
6:53 Pace

2 Mile warm up
2×2 miles 1st set: 6:25 down to 5:54. Last mile under 6 the whole time. 3 minute rest.
2nd set: 6:03 down to 5:48. Ran most of it sub 6 with the last 400 in 5:48.
1.25 mile cool down
Felt the burn. Still have a lot of work to get some speed endurance back. Happy with the effort.

Friday – 8 Miles
7:22 Pace. Easy run before Lindsey’s surgery

Saturday – 15 Miles
7:23 Pace.

With Lindsey on the mend in Bloomington I took the treadmill during Marshall’s nap. I waited way too long between waking up, eating, and then finally running. I cracked real hard. I try to do most of my training on minimal fuel but I really made a mistake today. Not enough water either for temp in the basement.

Ran on the ProForm Boston Marathon treadmill that Lindsey’s parents have so that is always fun. That course is a grind. It was a good run until I bonked.

This treadmill is legit.
Sunday – 10 Miles
7:36 Pace. Easy run. Took it easy today after yesterday’s harder hill effort.

Overall, another good week. I have not had a day off in a while and I don’t really feel the need at this point. I am not trying to run streak or anything but if I need to run slow I do. Just running at this point. Maybe I will need rest days when I ramp up the intensity but right now I feel good.

I’ll probably add one or two secondary runs to my load this week… probably one really so that I am at 8 runs. I am working on getting to 12 runs or so a week. Mileage will stay around 65 for the time being…maybe creep toward 70.

Naturally being in Bloomington, we’re required to go to both Soma & Laughing Planet.
So I started talking about the treadmill at the start of the run. People seem to hate the treadmill on the internet. I don’t get it. The treadmill can really be an effective tool when needed. Yes I would love to run outside all the time but sometimes the weather or whatever doesn’t allow. Get over it.

What do you think about the treadmill?

I finished Chrissie Wellington’s A life without limits” and have walked away feeling inspired to be a better athlete, but more importantly a better person. Chrissie is an Ironman World Champion 4 times over and has never lost an Iron distance race in the 13 that she has completed.

I read this book during several easy treadmill runs and book marked my favorite parts along the way. I know a lot of people think I’m crazy that I read on the treadmill- but I swear it’s amazing. I put my kindle on the second or third to largest font and it works beautifully. It helps pass time and also helps me enjoy the run more, while getting some reading in. There are so many books I wouldn’t have read this past year, had it not been for my treadmill running.

I promised myself I would actually go back and read the book marked pages though. A fair warning- this woman has a lot of great things to say, so there are quite a few quotes I pulled.

Clearly Chrissie is an amazingly talented athlete– you can’t WILL yourself to be as fast as or as talented as her, but you CAN will yourself to work hard and be the best that YOU can be. What I love most about Chrissie, is that she uses her platform to do good things. She knows that she has a responsibility and puts her responsibility to action by making the world a better place.

SO, here are my favorites:

  • “Just seize every opportunity you have, embrace every experience. Make a mark, for all the right reasons.”  – Said by Chrissie’s Dad when he dropped her off at College

  • “Acknowledging those weaknesses is vital to our development. Some are real and can be overcome, but others are not so much weaknesses as imperfections- it is just our perception that makes them seem so. Willpower and discipline have always played a huge role in my life and never more so than now, but if they are not applied selectively, they can wear you down as much as they spur you on. Pick your battles and accept yourself for who you are.”

  • “Hard work and an open mind- it’s the only way to realize the potential that is inside every one of us.”

  • “You may not be able to right now, but with a positive farm of mind and a willingness to work, anything is possible. Remaining positive really is one of the most precious faculties for any athlete. That, and the ability to stay focused and disciplined. Develop a mind bank of positive images and thoughts- family, friends, previous successes, favorite places, a big plate of chips. You need to build it up as you would any collection, but soon you will have a range of thoughts to flick through when next your body and souls are screaming out for relief.”

  • “Never ever give up- and smile”

  • “In an endurance athlete’s life, pain is never far away. Pain is little more than a conversation between your body and your brain, this is another reason why a fit mind is so important. The brain is the master computer of the body. Even when we are working on the efficiency of the peripheral components- the legs, the arms, the butt cheeks- we can recruit the seat of all power to enhance the effectiveness of our work. It’s a question of testing limits. For a star there’s the importance of keeping an open mind. The brain is programmed to protect us, and that can mean imposing limited now hat it thinks we can or should do. Constantly push at those limits, because the brain can be way too cautious.”

  • “Never image in anything is impossible and never stop trying out new things.”

  • “Everyone gets nervous before a race- it’s human. I would be worried about any athlete that didn’t. It’s a sign of how much we care. The key is to trust in your preparation. You have done all you can, os focus on that fact. You will remain the same person before, during and after the arc, so the result, however important, will not define you. The journey is what matters.”

  • LIVE: By John Blazeman “Live…. More than your neighbors. Unleash yourself upon the world and go places. Go no. Giggle, no, laugh. No… stay out past day, and bark at the moon like the wild dog that you are. Understand that this is not a dress rehearsal. This is it…. your life. Face your fears and live your dreams. Take it in. Yes, every chance you get…. come close. And by all means, whatever you do… Get it on film”

  • “You know that there will be ebbs and flows, and you have to hold on to the knowledge that you have been there before and come through it.You can’t latch on to the pain; somehow you must switch that part of your brain off and go into automatic pilot.”

  • “No one should ever be afraid of failing; it’s being afraid to give it your al in trying that I urge against. If there is one thing I have learned, particularly in my life as an athlete, it is that our limits may not be where we think they are. And even when we think we’ve finally reached them, the next time we go there exploring we often find that they’ve moved again.”

And this is one reason I love her so much:

  • “More than though, is the desire to use well this privilege of being a world champion. It excited me to be in a position to make a difference. It excites me to see how sport can inspire people and change lives. I believe that the responsibilities of a professional sportsman or woman extend beyond their performance on the big stage. They have a role to pal in shaping the health of their nations, spreading positive messages and doing their best to effect chance. Not enough take that responsibility seriously. With it comes power, and you choose to use it or waste it.”
  • “My only policy throughout has been to keep an open mind and, whatever I may do, to give it my all.”

  • “Be Happy 4 this moment…. 4 this moment…. is your life”

That’s all! I hope this left you feeling inspired this AM- and if you’re looking for a good read- pick it up. 🙂

If you noticed I really only blog about training… exciting I know but its what I like to talk about. Here’s another training log.

Overall, it was a good week. I am not where I’m ultimately hoping to be but that is expected with taking 8+ weeks off any real training. I ended up running every day and I am fine with that. I am working on slowly building up my resistance to be able to handle 10-12 runs a week so 7 runs in 7 days is a step in that process.

Week 2

  • 7 runs
  • 64 miles
  • 2ish workouts

Monday – 8 miles

Easy/recovery miles from the weekend double. 7:42 pace. I am making a point to slow down my easy runs this cycle.

Tuesday – 7 miles

More easy running. 7:30 pace or so.

Wednesday – 10 Miles

Medium range run. 10 miles…I love that distance. 7:24 pace

Thursday – 7 miles

2 Mile warmup

4 mile descending tempo. Used the first two miles to work down from 6:40 to 6:11. Ran last two miles @ 6:11 & 6:03
1 mile cool down.

I have a lot of work to do to get into any sort of race shape. Happy with the workout though.

Then it was requested that I do a little treadmill maintenance.

The problem.
Fixed. Power still works. Also lubed the deck. Success.

Friday – 8 miles

Recovery run. 7:42 pace

Saturday – 14 miles

Long run day. Steady the whole time. 7:14 pace.

Sunday – 10 Miles

Light hill work with a progressive finish. Doing a workout after my Saturday long run is going to be a staple of the Mohican training. Got in about 800 feet of climbing. 7:12 pace overall. Ran the last four miles faster and faster. 6:40 down to 5:56 at the end. Happy with how the workout went coming off the 14 yesterday.

Like I said, pretty standard week. Liking how I am feeling as I getting comfortable with more running and finally feel back into the swing of things. I’ll probably stay around 65 miles or so for a couple weeks as I absorb and adapt to the training. We’ll see how I feel about things in a couple weeks but I kind of like the doubles on the weekend so far.

Another thing that I am working on this cycle is making sure to “work up and into” my stress sessions. I am trying very hard to ease into them and make sure that I feel strong at the end. I think more often than not people hammer the workout from the beginning and then struggle to complete the workout. I know that I am guilty of that myself… it’ss important both mentally and physically to execute a workout in a building/progressive manner. It’s a delicate balance…the workout needs to be hard enough to cause the stress you need to adapt but its need to be done in a manner that it doesn’t set future training back. The goal is the race and not nailing workouts. Remember that. The race is the goal!

Non-Running

Lindsey and Marshall are in Florida this weekend visiting Shelby and Co so I am home alone! Party!!! So naturally I started a new show.. since Breaking Bad is over now for the second time :(. The show you ask? The Wire. I have always heard  great things and I must say it is pretty good so far. I am five episodes in. We are bootlegging an HBO Go subscription from my parents. Yeah that’s right. I have no shame in that.

I also fixed the treadmill. The outlet needed to be fixed. Just call me Bob Villa.

And I kind of miss this guy:

Happy training.
