Often this is due to aging or lacking tooth because of to an incident.

They start to wonder how it occurred, although it is extremely apparent.

It was hot as heck and you were in your “lady time” (fact: I have DNS before because of that…), those 2 factors alone are HUGE. We have all run races “stupidly” we all get caught up in the adrenaline of racing, and I definitely have some races that were piss-poor-pacing on my part and spent weeks kicking my ass afterwards for it.

You have more going on than pretty much anyone I know, with your surgery and all. I can barely think straight trying to race smart without something big like that looming over me. You are a fantastic runner, and a smart one too- one race doesn’t change that. I’m super glad you are considering doing another half before your big day. Go into it with a “what will be will be” mentality. Maybe you will get to race day and feel amazing and slowly start to feel better each and every mile and run an awesome race, maybe you get to race day and not feel great so you go into it saying “time to have fun”. This gives you a good end to your running times, it will help you look forward to the amazing running you are going to have after surgery and for many years to come.

Either way you are a rockstar in my book

Hey! Thanks so much and congratulations on racing your first half, that’s an incredible experience and accomplishment! Nice job getting it done without walking- everyone has different goals and I ran my first half marathon in 2005, so I’ve been doing it for quite awhile! Good luck with your next goal, as I’m sure you’ve caught the bug!

Oh fun! That’s my sister. Oh man, the heat was tough. Thanks for stopping by- and here’s to us both breaking 1:30 in the very near future!

I ran a hot, humid and messy half this past weekend and came in at 1:32. Not a happy camper!! I was looking to PR sub 1:30 but the weather was totally against me. It happens and we have to get over it, right? Glad you finished and won some $$$! That has to ease the pain a little bit! All you can do is race again:-) Great post!

You are crazy talented! This race was my VERY FIRST half! I have only been running for a year and not put in nearly as much time as some do, but I did work really hard and I met my goals. Ran it without walking (other than long enough to drink at the water stops) and finished under 2.5 (2:23). My goals are a lot lower, but they were really high for me. I totally get the sadness and frustration when you don’t reach your goals, but you are so right that there is nothing wrong with making sure that they are attainable for you in that moment. Good luck as you continue!!

Hi Sam! haha- thanks for the tough love there and you are right to say this is my temporary last hurrah so thanks for that much needed reminder. I just had a really nice, beautiful run this morning at a comfortable, happy pace that was a nice reminder of why I do love running so much. Thank you for your input- I appreciate it a lot.

Hi Kelly! Thanks for the note- I don’t think I realized you were running- you race a lot!!! I’m sorry you had a nasty race too. It’s comforting to know that I wasn’t the only one out there who made those decisions. I’ve looked at the Columbus race- but I didn’t realize it was flat! We are going to be out of town at a wedding that weekend though. I assume you are doing it? Thanks again Kelly!

I know you know that, and I know that everyone’s different and has different goals and expectations. I also know how you feel. BUT, it sounds to me like you had too much riding on this race, what with it being your (TEMPORARY) last hurrah, and all. I’ve always spent way too much time inside my own head as an athlete, and that’s what I’m hearing here.

Time to let it go now, since you’ve obviously got bigger fish to fry. I think you should do that half in a couple of weeks, just to get out there and run and feel good about running. Just remember how much you obviously love to run: it’s not always about the PR. You’ve got it in you, you’ve put in the work, and it will all come together when the time is right. 🙂
