This comment is like…3 years late! However, was listening to your podcast with my friend, Abby Bales, and wanted to come read your BRCA story! I have two friends with the gene and one, a GYN oncology fellow herself, just got her prophylactic mastectomy this year at age 30. Being an OB/GYN resident myself (and hopefully future reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist!), BRCA1 and 2 mutations are something I encounter fairly frequently when we work with our GYN Oncology team. I love that you shared your proactive experience!

My friend and I often talk about how amazing science is. In the past few decades, science has identified the gene, can test for the mutation, and, even more, test for it in embryos if patients choose to do IVF with pre-genetic diagnosis to ensure offspring do not have the deleterious gene. Incredible, right?!

I would love to hear about your continued experience with surveillance and such. I think its wonderful that you have “put it all out there” so to speak and, hopefully, have made women not as fearful for both testing and prophylactic treatment.
